King Of Persia Xerxes ACHAEMENID7,437,438 was also known as The Great. He was also known as Xerxes I Khshayarsha Ahasuerus Achaemenes.433,434,435 He died in Sushan, Persia.433,439 He was in Sushan, Persia; Occupation: King Of Medo-Persia.433

BIOGRAPHY: KHSHAYARSHA, also known as Ahasuerus, also known as Xerxes I, nicknamed The Great.

BIOGRAPHY: In 484 BC, the third year of his reign, Ahasuerus gave a feast, probably having some connection wit h preparation for his Greek Wars. The prophet Daniel had already predicted during the reign of Cyaxares II (q.v.), a.k.a. "Darius the Mede," that three kings should begin their reigns in Persia, and the fourth should be richer than any of the rest, and this fourth king should start wars with Greece [Daniel 11:2]. That Ahasuerus is called "The Great" is consistent with the prophecy.

BIOGR APHY: At that feast, he drank too much wine and, in that state, sent word to th e Queen that is called Amestris in Greek and Vashti (q.v.) in Hebrew, and asked her to come to the feast and display her beauty. Vashti indignantly refused, and for that she was, by royal decree, removed as Queen and not permitted to co me again into the presence of the King. (She was not, however, executed, becau se history records her return to favor upon the death of Ahasuerus and the accession of his son and successor Artaxerxes I (q.v.).)

BIOGRAPHY: Ahasuerus' Greek Wars were a disaster, as extra-Biblical history records, despite some early successes. When he returned from them, he decided that he wanted a new Queen to take the place of the one he had deposed. He therefore gave orders to gather in hundreds of young women to join his already considerable population of wives and concubines (which we call, after the Arabic, "harem", meaning "the forbidden place.") Among these was a young Jewess named Hadassah in Hebrew and Esther (q.v.) in Old High Persian.

BIOGRAPHY: This turned out to be a highly fortuitous choice, both for Ahasuerus and for Esther's people. Esther completed the year of preparation for women to be ushered into the king's bedchamber, and Ahasuerus, quite simply, fell in love with her and made her his Queen, a distinction she held until her death. Her elder cousin Mordecai (q.v.) also became a magistrate in the city of Shushan, holding court in the city gate known as th e "king's gate," which served the function that city halls and Halls of Justice serve today. In that capacity, Mordecai overheard two of the chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, plotting assassination. Assassination was a common hazard for the kings of the Persian Empire, and indeed Ahasuerus would eventually fall victim to it--but it was not to be, this time. Mordecai informed Esther immedia tely, and she sent urgent word by messenger to Ahasuerus with the full particulars. Ahasuerus ordered an investigation, that investigation implicated Bigthan and Teresh, and Ahasuerus had them executed. All this was written in the Roya l Annals, but then it was promptly forgotten. In all likelihood, Ahasuerus did not then actually meet Mordecai at all.

BIOGRAPHY: Not long afterward, Ahasuerus promoted a certain Agagite named Haman to be his grand vizier and ordered everyone in the city to bow down to him--but Mordecai would not. The royal establishment questioned Mordecai about it, and Mordecai did not bend--andheals o told them that he was a Jew. This they told Haman, and Haman would not let t he matter rest. In fact, he laid a plot to have all the Jews everywhere exterm inated. To further this aim, Haman told Ahasuerus that the Jews did not obey Persian law--which was probably exaggerated to the point of falsehood. Ahasueru s was convinced, and so he gave Haman his signet ring and authorized Haman to i ssue an irrevocable directive stating that all the Jews were to be killed on a date certain. Haman and his associates apparently cast lots, or _pur_, to choo se the date, and the lot fell on the thirteenth of Adar.

BIOGRAPHY: The king s of Persia had an iron rule that any person who came into the king's presence without a specific summons from him was subject to instant execution--unless th e king held out his golden sceptre to the intrude Parents: I The Great Darius HYSTASPIS and Atossa ACHAEMENES.
