Q. We differ at Fountain Lee Henry Welch as Mary's Welch father. Most of my info comes from places on t he internet, so I am always in the process of revisioning and cleaning up my da ta base.
A. Unfortunately, there's a lot of mis-information posted on the we b and many people don't question the sources.
Q. Last nite, I looked thur al l the census for 1860 in Dent Co MO for Fountain Welch to see who was his child ren. And as luck would have it, Mary is not in Fountain's household in the 1860 census (She got married Nov 1853 and started her own family)
The 1850 census for Crawford Co MO has Mary's father as F Welch. My question: Is his name Fount ain N Welch b. 1806 OR

A. Many folks have mistakenly believed that the estate papers for Fountai n and one of the land records has an "N" for the middle intial but actually a s tudy of the old-style writing makes it more likely an "H" as some of his descen dants have claimed. I just recently read an article that talked about this sam e thing. If I can find the article I'll send it along to you.
Q. What is yo ur source? Also where did you find the marriage date?
A. I've been working f or a few years with an elderly researcher Gloria Welch Wolf. She's been doing research on this family for many years and is currently getting a book ready fo r publication. She's descended from another of the sons of Fountain & Margaret . She waited for many years to find the parentage of Fountain and Margaret. F amily member always recognized that
Margaret's maiden name was Hendricks but n o one could prove it. The old-timers of her family said that Fountain was from Henderson County, Kentucky, so she spent years looking in the wrong place for documentation.
Gloria finally hired a professional researcher that used a br oader scope in research and didn't pay as much attention to "family legend". The researcher found the marriage bond for Fountain and Margaret in Union Count y, KY, records. Besides the date, that marriage bond contained the father's na me for Fountain and the guardian for Margaret, Benjamin Dye, in lieu of her fat her James Hendricks at the time of her marriage.
Further research shows that Anne Hendricks married Benjamin Dye also in Union Co, KY. We have no proof of Anne's connection to Fountain but the date of her marriage and the names of Fo untain's daughter and granddaughters further
strengthens the belief that she w as a sister, aunt, or some close member of Fountain's family.
Gloria has bee n to Salem to visit Ken Fiebelman a few times trying to correct errors made in the cemeteries book--to no avail. She doesn't have a lot of patience with inac curate information when someone doesn't have the documentation to back it up. The probate records when Fountain died listed Mary among his heirs.
Isn't th at 1850 fenderal census taken in Missouri the pits ? ! ? ! A census taker that records only intials should be shot--I think. if you go back to the censuses and compare most of the data comes out pretty close. I have several examples i n my other family lines of definite mistakes--such as my maternal Grandmother w as one of three girls and the censustaker recorded on
of the sisters as a male instead of female. (Probably because she had an unusual name.)
Death recor ds are another source of frustration for me with so much inaccurate information . Why did anyone ever let a son-in-law be an informant for information about a mother-in-law or father-in-law. I could site you five examples of proven mist akes made by in-laws.

More likely his birthdate was 1805; but I beli eve I kept what family members claimed. Was there a reason you didn't include earlier census records too? Sometimes the ages are only as accurate as the inf ormant.
