CAPT AIN JOHN BOWNE, (1630?-1684), from the earliest history of Olde East New Jersey , the settlement at Middletown, Monmouth Co., in 1664-1669, (vide, ante, PART T WO, pp. 167 et seq.), a son of the first WILLIAM BOWNE, (BOWNE, p. 7), was
pro bably the most prominent and active of all the pioneers. His name appears frequ ently in the recs. sometimes as "BOUND," (vide, ante, PART THREE, p. 407). His wife was Lydia Holmes, dau. of Rev. Obadiah Holmes. They had a son, JOHN BOWNE, b. Apr. 1, 1664. He m. ca. 1693, FRANCIS BOWMAN, dau. of HENRY BOWMAN, and sis ter of THOMAS BOWMAN of the "Falls of the Delaware" Burlington Co., (ARCH., Vol . XXIII, p. 49; vide, ante, PART THREE, p. 359). The latter d. in 1692, naming his "sister Frances Bowman" et al., and she d. in 1716-7, as the widow of CAPT. JOHN BOWNE," of Monmouth Co., (ARCH., Vol. XXIII, p. 50).

CAPTAIN JOHN B OWNE, patentee, was the son of William Bowne (q.v.) and his wife Ann. The write r believes that he was born in 1626, but can give no record to verify this, the impression probably being gained from some youthful conversation with
his gra ndmother, who had much to say about her early Bowne ancestors. He died on Jan. 3, 1684.
With his father, William, he came from Salem to Gravesend, where, S ept. 20, 1647, he was alloted a plantation.
He was the unquestioned leader in the settlement of Monmouth, and, at one time, or another, held all the importna t offices within the gift of the people or the appointment of the Crown. At the time of his death he was Major of the Monmouth
Militia, the ranking military officer of the county. No adequate account of his activities can be undertaken here.
He married Lydia, daughter of the Reverend Obadiah Homes, who long sur vived him. Their children were: Captain John (2nd), 1664-1716, who married Fran ces Bowman, and died s.p.; Captain Obadian, 1666-1726, who married, first, his own cousin,
Elizabeth, daughter of Governor Andrew Bowne, and, secondly, Eliza beth, daughter of Captain Cornelius Longfield, who was the son of the Dutch Adm iral Van Langveldt; Deborah, who married Richard Stillwell; Sarah, who married Richard Salter; and,
Catherine, who married William Hartshorne.
