Biography:
Gustav joined a cattle drive at age 12 because he didn't want to work in his father's tavern . Working as a cowboy, he herded cattle to Kansas and up into Montana in later years. He wa s on one of the last drives over the ChishomTrail and was trail boss on the last cattle drive to Mile City, Montana in about 1882. Gustav would come home to Fredericksburg after each dr ive and during one visit he married Helene Arhelger. Late in 1885, he arrived home unexpected ly and found his wife with another man. He was wearing his guns in town and shot and killed t he man.Fearing he would be hung if he stayed, Gustav left the state for the midwest. He was 2 3 years old and his son Edwin was only 1. He never saw his son or wife again but believed th e large Arhelger family would watch out for his family. Edwin was never told the story of wha t happened and thought his father had just deserted the family and disappeared. Helene Arhelg er Alberthal had a second child, Henry Carl Adam Alberthal several months later in January o f 1886 but Henry only lived five months. Helene died in March 1886 of "grief" according to th e church records.
Gustav changed his name to Charles H. Smith. As a cowboy he became known as Haywire Smith bec ause he always carried bailing wire in his saddle bags to fix things. He moved to Spokane, Wa shington and purchased a boarding house. That business burned in the great fire of 1886. Gustav then went into Okinagwan Indian territory, which is in the central part of Washington and into Canada. He lived with the Indians for 4 or 5 years.
Gustav next moved to Golden which is just outside Omack and still in Indian territory. He me t Nancy Ann Corbet, a 14 year old girl of English ancestry. Nancy's mother wanted her to star tentertaining in the saloon she owned. So Nancy and Gustav had a dislike of working in tavern s in common. Gustav offered marriage and after thinking it over, Nancy said that marriage wa s the least of two evils. Their first child was born when Nancy was only 15. Eventually the y would have nine children. They bought a section of land from the railroad two miles outsid e of Deer Park, Washington. Gustav farmed, kept a few head of cattle and did some logging t o make ends meet. Eventually the farm was able to support the family.
The family lived under the name of Smith for 20 years until Gustav found out that he was not wanted inTexas for the shooting. He then changed the family name back to Alberthal. They ha d four children by then. Late in life Gustav contacted his son Edwin, but Edwin wanted to have nothing to do with his father. He said that if his father didn't want him when he was young , he didn't want his father when Gustav was old. Nancy and Gustav lived the rest of their liv es on the farm near Deer Creek and that is where he passed away in 1939 at age 76 (ALB-22).
