He married the daughter and co-heiress of Sir John Gifford, Lord of Yester, and by her had a great accession of fortune. Sir Thomas De Haya, of Locherworth, Sheriff of Peebles, living c1357, married Joanna, eldest daughter and co-heir of Hugh Gifford, of Yester, and with her acquired a part of the lands of Yester. The Marquess of Tweeddale's (David Hay) eldest son is called Earl of Gifford. While in the second of the Arms of the Marquess are the Arms of Gifford of Yester. I understand it was common at this time when a family had no surviving sons that the father's Arms were incorporated into the husband of the eldest daughter.

H1 Sir Thomas Boyd, fifth Feudal Baron of Kilmarnock, b 14xx, k 9/7/1439, m 14xx, Lady Isobel, and had issue:-
[Lived: ]- One of the first acts of King James I. on his return to Scotland was to order the arrest of Sir Walter Stewart, eldest son of the Regent, Malcom Fleming of Cumbernauld, and Thomas Boyd, younger of Kilmarnock, 13 May 1424, on the charge of having wasted the Crown rents. Boyd was confined at
Dalkeith, and shortly afterwards released on paying certain fines to the royal Exchequer. He occurs as Baille of Duchael 16 July 1437.

He killed Sir Alan Stewart of Gartullie at Falkirk in 1439. He himself was killed in revenge by Sir Alexander Stewart at Craignaught Hill, Renfrewshire 9 July 1439. It would appear that many on both sides died (can a list of those killed be obtained?). It would appear that their was a feud between the Boyds and the Stewarts (Is it known what it was about?)

Made Earl of Arran and married Mary, sister of James III, 1467.
Fled to Europe after being accused of treason 1469.

J1 Thomas Boyd, Earl of Arran (created on 26/4/1467), b 14xx, d Antwerp, likely before 1474.

Robert's son, Thomas Master of Boyd and Earl of Arran, is conjectured to have died before 1474. He having excepted capture at Edinburgh fled to Denmark. While Robert probably died almost certainly before 14 October 1482 when the title and estates were restored to his grandson, James. (p 145)

J1 Thomas Boyd, Master of Boyd, created Earl of Arran in 1467, b 14xx, d 147x, the date of his death is unknown but is conjectured to have occurred before 1474. It is said he died in Antwerp, where a magnificant monument was erected to his memory. m before 26 April 1467, the Lady Mary Stewart, eldest sister of King James III (then a minor) bc 1450 dc 1488, (her marriage to Thomas was declared null and void after his death, and she was compelled to marry 1474, James, 1st Lord Hamilton, whose descendants later became Duke's of Abercorn - see Burke's Peerage, 1970 ed.) and had issue by both men.
[Lived: ]- First mentioned in 1467 when married to the Lady Mary, eldest sister of the reigning King (then a minor), James III. and created Earl of Arran by charter dated 26 April 1467. Four charters being simultaneous granted, 26 April 1467, to Thomas, Master of Boyd, the designed Earl, and Mary, his wife. The FIRST of these conveyed the isle of Arran, within the sheriffdom of Bute; the SECOND the lands of Stewartoun, Tarrinzean, Turnbery, and Risedalemure, in Ayrshire, and Meikle Cumrey, in Bute; the THIRD Cavertoun, in Roxburghshire, Teling in Forfarshire, Polgavy, in Perthshire, and the LAST Kilmarnock, Dalry, Kilbride, Nodesdale, Monfodd and Flat, in Ayrshire, and Naristoun, in Lanarkshire, on the resignation of his father.

In 1468 was one of the Commissioners appointed to visit foreign courts to select a wife for the King - James III. A marriage treaty having been arranged with the Princess Margaret of Denmark, he proceeded with a noble train to escort her to Scotland. Returning July 1469, his wife advised him of the downfall of this family. He immediately sailed back to Denmark, on a Dannish ship, with his wife, where he met with a noble reception suitable to his high birth and real merit. He was attainted along with his father and uncle 22 November 1469. The Earl of Arran, though absent, and that on the King's and public business of great importance, was, without a hearing, declared a public enemy, and all his estates confiscated.

"He travelled thence through Germany into France; where he prevailed on Louis XI to attempt his reconciliation with his Royal brother-in-law, but without success. He then left the French Court, and went to Charles, Duke of Burgundy, who received him graciously, and accepted his services in the war he was then waging with his rebellious subjects. Finding him a brave and wise man, he honoured and supported him and Lady Mary in a manner becoming their rank;- whereupon King James wrote over to Flanders, and recalled his sister." This same source goes on to add that during his residence in the Court of Duke of Burgundy, the Lady Mary bore him a son and a daughter before returning to Scotland.

"The Earl, borne down by the weight of his misfortunes, died soon after at Antwerp, where he was honourably interred, at the expense of the Duke of Burgundy, in 1474. The Duke also erected a superb monument to his memory, with an inscription suitable to the great character he left behind him."
Can this monument or inscription be found in Antwerp?

"He was contracted, 20 January 1465, to Marion, youngest daughter of Gilbert, first Lord Kennedy, but this marriage does not appear to have taken place, and he married, as already stated, before 26 April 1467, the Lady Mary, eldest daughter of King James II." (The Scots Peerage, vol v, p 148) This does not explain why the marriage with Marion did not take place but it could explain the attitude of the Kennedy's towards the Boyds downfall in 1469. From the limited material I have read it suggests it was the Kennedys who were responsible for it. Parents: 1st Lord Boyd Robert BOYD and Mariota Janet MAXWELL.
