Tech College Faculty Man Tells of Education's Challenge-Honor
Students Named

The High School audiorium was packed by parents, relatives, friends andschool patrons in atte ndance at the Commencement Exercises for thegraduating class, with all available standing roo m taken up Monday nightwhen the coveted sheepskins were awarded to the largest class in thehi story of the local school.
The stage was beautifully decorated in the class colors and with largequanities of flowers . The members of the class of '26 marched into theauditorium from downstairs. Miss Paulin e Rice, Senior sponsor, playedthe proccesional, "Largo," by Handel.
Mr. Lee of the Texas Women's College, gave the invocation.
Dr. J.M. Gordon of the Tech spoke to the large audience on the subject"Education and Its Chal lenge."
Dr. Gordon stated that every one in the United States was eitherindirectly or directly in th e education business. He said, "Theeducation process of yesterday was a pouring process an d a fact gatheringprocess. A man with a B.S. degree was an educated man. The man who wasa w alking encyclopedia was considered an educated man. A definition ofeducation would be "The p rocess of producing, directing and preventingchanges in the human being." There are two fact ors in education:heredity and environment. Heredity shows what you can do and environmentsho ws what you will do. Some of the things that an education should dofor the individual are: T hose with an education should have the abiligyof earning a living. It should leave him intel lectually superior. Itshould give the graduate health. It should give social adjustment. I tshould give an appreciation of the beautiful. And it should givecharacter.
The members of the Girls' Glee Club, with Miss Pauline Rice at the piano,rendered two selecti ons, "Merry Jane" and "Some Where the Fields AreBeaming."
Mr. Nemast, acting as master of ceremonies, made the announcement ofhonors of the graduates . Miss Ruth Rutledge received first place inpoint of excellent grades, with Miss Ruth Lohma n closely behind forsecond honors. Tommie Hardin and Vivian Boyd received high honors amongt he boys of the class.
Superintendent B.H. McLain presented the diplomas to the graduating class.
Elder W.D. Black gave the benediction.

Miss Rutl edge was given her choiceof 25 scholarships in many Texas Colleges. Tommie Hardin was alsogr anted a scholasrship which he would choose from several scholarshipsawarded to the boy makin g high honors. Miss Ruth Lohman, who rankedsecond in honors, was awarded a scholarship in Te xas Woman's College atFort Worth.



2. As a young man, he injured his leg near the ankle playing basketballand osteomeyolitis se t in. He had to go to the Mayo Clinic in MN forsurgery and treatment. His mother went wit h him but had to leave himthere after surgery to take care of the rest of the family at home . Hestayed in MN for several weeks.
For years he had recurring swelling and drainage problems with the leg.

He had familial tremors (his hands shook at all times). This was veryhard on him as he worke d with his hands, as a hobby, building differentthings. He would have to build frames for wh at he was working on so thatit would not move while he was building or repairing.

3. He was employed at a local bank in Sweetwater for awhile aftermarriage. Then went to wor k for the Gulf Oil Corporation there. He andhis wife and daughters lived on a farm east of S weetwater (part of thehomeplace which he had purchased from his mother) where he farmed andra ised cattle along with working for Gulf. In 1954 Gulf closedoperations in Sweetwater and h e along with many of the employees whochose to go, were transferred to Port Arthur, TX to th e refinery there.He retired from Gulf in 1972 after 37 years.

He enjoyed astronomy & archeology among other things. He used to sit onthe porch with us whe n we were young and discuss and show us theconstellations. He plotted the time for the satal lites to come over tothe second and was never wrong.

For Shirley's senior prom, he helped mother make her prom dress. He madethe circular patter n for the skirt and mother cut and sewed it.


12. Vivian Boyd, 88, of Sweetwater died Thursday in HolidayRetirement Center.
Graveside Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at SweetwaterCemetery with Bob Dup ont officiating. Arrangements are by Cate-Spencer &Trent Funeral Home.
Mr. Boyd was born Sept. 15, 1906 in Nolan County and marriedRuby McElroy on June 12 , 1929 in Sweetwater. A retiree from Gulf Oil, hebegan his employment with the firm in Nola n County in 1935. He wastransferred to Port Arthur in 1954, and retired there in 1972. Afte r hisretirement, Mr. and Mrs Boyd lived in Livingston before moving back toSweetwater in 1983 .
He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife Ruby Boyd of Sweetwater; a daughter,Vivian Goodman of Con roe; two sisters, Iona Adams of California and MelvaWiedeman of Sweetwater; a brother, Bobb y Frank Boyd of Dallas; threegrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces an d nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Wildin; asister, Jessie Lee Campbell ; a brother J.P. Boyd; and a granddaughter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bryan Newsome, Chris Broussard,Bill Briggs, Richard Nei ll, Richard McElroy and Mike McElroy. (Richardand Mike were unable to attend so Benny McElro y, Steve McElroy and RodneyBoyd filled in. my notes-vg)
