H2 William Boyd, Abbot of Kilwinning, b 14xx, d 14xx, m 14xx, wife unknown and had issue:-
[Lived: ]- Appears as an incorporated member of the newly founded University of Glasgow 1451. He obtained from King James III. a charter confirming the various royal grants to Kilwinning Abbey. Ancestor to the Boyd of Merton, including the current Viscount Boyd of Merton. (see Chapter 13) - of Merton
Hall. See Burke's Landed Gentry (1848-1866).

NOTE: In Burke's Peerage and Baronetage, 1970, 105 ed., p 911 under 5th Earl of Eglintoun, it refers to "acquired the church Barony of Kilwinning by purchase, 1594." No seller was given but could it have been a descendant of Abbot William.

So in November 1992 I wrote to the current Earl who supplied me with part of Memorials of the Montgomeries by Fraser. On page 54 it said:-
"It was this fifth Earl of Eglintoun who first acquired the monastery of Kilwinning.
"Mr. William Melville, commendator of Kilwinning and Tungland, obtained, in 1591, from King James VI. a grant of the benefice and abbacy of the monastery of Kilwinning, and jurisdiction of the regality, and the lands, lordships, &c. thereof. In the following year, he made resignation in the hands of the King for a new grant of the monastery and manor place."

On page 55 it said:-
"Ten years later, the Earl of Eglintoun acquired from Melville the barony of Kilwinning, by purchase; and a charter in his favour passed the Great Seal on 5th January 1603."

This would indicate to me that the Boyds ceased to have a connection with the Abbey of Kilwinning prior to 1591. Parents: Sir Thomas BOYD and Joanna MONTGOMERY.
