(2) Came to York Co., P A from Ireland. (5a) The other families included the McPHERSONs, McKEENs, McELWEEs, McCLEANs , MORRISONs, GILKERSONs, SIMONTONs, BLACKs, Moses McCARLEY, Henry McDONOUGH, Duncan EVANS, Jo hn CRAIG. (5b) In 1727 a recommendation was sent to have settlers come over to help hold th e land which MD clained in PA. A colony of 140 families from Ulster, led by Capt. Hance HAMIL TON, landed in New Castle, DE, and located first on Sir Wm. KEITH's tract called Newberry, i n Newberry Twp., York Co., PA. This tract extended in 1732 from Conewago Creek, York and Adam s Counties, PA, to Yellow Breeches Creek, York Co., PA. The land was close to Wrightsville, Y ork Co., PA, on the Susquehanna River.
(5c) ca. 1734: The Scotch-Irish came to Adams Co., PA about 1734 under the leadership of Ha nce HAMILTON and settled along the branches of Marsh Creek. They came from the hills of Count ies Tyrone, Derry, Cavan and Sligo in Ireland. (5b) The settlers moved before 1736 to Marsh C reek, Adams Co., PA.

(5d) 1765, 15 May: William BOYD, survey on warrant, 200 acres in Manor of Maske, PA. (5c) T he Manor of Maske was established by an act of the Proprietors of the Colony of PA in 1740, b ut could not be laid out then owing to the resistance by the settlers, who had established th eir homes there. To the south of the Manor of Maske (Marsh Creek Settlements) lay the territo ry where the claims between William PENN and Lord Baltimore grants overlapped. This land wa s in dispute and was settled under MD claims and grants known as "Digge's Choice" and the "Ca rroll Tract." Settlers in this strip had so much trouble with land titles, fees and taxes tha t they moved over into the Manor of Maske. The Carroll Tract was just south of the Marsh Cree k Settlement. The order for the survey of the Manor of Maske called for 30,000 acres, dated 1 8 Jun 1741. Warrants were issued for the Manor 1765-1775. The lines were not actually run unt il Jan 1766 and a return made 17 Apr 1768. The southern line was about 1/2 mile north of th e present Mason and Dixon line, or boundary between PA and MD, and included all of Cumberlan d Twp. and the southeast corner of Franklin Twp. The persons on this land along the branche s of Marsh Creek were Hugh McCLEAN, Henry McDONOUGH, Hugh LOGAN, Hance HAMILTON, William BOYD , Thomas BOYD, and others.

Bedford Co., VA. (Probably died there.) He and wife Elizabeth were the
parents of nine child ren.

WILLIAM, 4th Earl of Kilmarnock succeeded his father when but13 years of age.
(1) Robert Boyd was born in August 1689, and baptised on the 24th of August. He died at Kilmarnock in 1760 aged 72. He married Margaret Thompson and had four sons and a daughter. John settled in London, William, northern Scotland, James at Newburyport, MA. Alexander, born about 1720 at Kilmarrnock and Margaret who married Fairservice of Kilmarnock.
He married Lady Ann Livingstone, daughter and sole heir of James, 5th Earl of Linlithgow and Callander, by Lady Mary Hay (daughter of John, 12th Earl of Errol) and had sons, James, Lord Boyd, born April 20, 1725, also Charles and William. Lady Ann Livingstone, wife of the Earl of Kilmarnock, died, at Kilmarnock, September 1747. Of her three sons the eldest had been educated in principles of loyalty, so that he was in the army of the King, opposed to his father in the battle of Culloden. In the rebellion of 1745, in favour of the pretender, the unfortunate Earl of Kilmarnock, deviating from the principles of his illustrious ancestors, fell a sacrifice to the justice of his country. Being but 13 when deprived of the care and instruction of his father, he fell into hands unfavourable to integrity and honour. He manifested, in his youth, a genius not inferior to his high birth and illustrious descent. Finding the family estates much encumbered, he chose retirement rather than public life. A large portion of the patrimony had been alienated, and the income was uncomfortably small. It was his Lordship misfortune to be too soon let loose among the gaieties of youth and as he grew up, instead of applying himself to the dry assiduities of study, he devoted his time to the pursuit of far more expensive
pleasures than his fortune could support. By this course he considerably reduced his already emaciated estate, which may afford a probable reason for his engagement in the services of the pretender, Charles Edward Stuart. He did not join the rebellion at first, but encouraged his tenants to serve the King. After the battle of Prestonpans he joined the rebel army, and was received with marks of esteem and distinction.
He was made member of the privy-council, appointed Colonel of the guards, and promoted to the rank of general in the army. He behaved with courage and resolution, until at the fatal battle of Culloden, he was taken prisoner, or surrendered himself to the King's troops, supposing them to be FitzJames Calvary. On July 28, 1746, he was, with the Earl of Cromarty and Lord Balmerino, conducted to Westminster Hall, where he pleaded guilty to a charge of treason, and submitted himself to His Majesty's mercy and clemancy. On Wednesday, July 30, these nobleman were brought from the tower to receive sentence. When his Lordship was asked if he had anything to say why sentence of death should not be passed upon him, he addressed himself to the Lord Chancellor, and the whole
august assembly, then consisting of his peers, and delivered an eloquent speech, after which, the sentence of death was passed upon him. After this, he presented petitions to the King, and Prince of Wales, and the Duke of Cumberland, wherein he set forth his family's constant attachment to the
Royal interests, his father's zeal and activity in the rebellion of 1715, and also his own appearing in arms when young, under his father, and the whole tenor of his life until this occasion. But the services of his ancestors could not satisfy the demands of justice, and, in accordance with the sentence, he was, on the 18th of August, 1746, beheaded on Tower Hill, his estates and honours being forfeited to the Crown. This dismal catastrophe of the last Earl of Kilmarnock did not entirely extinguish the light and glory of this ancient family, for, happily, his eldest son and heir.

- He accompanied his father though but ten years of age when he marched to oppose Lord Mar in 1715. During the earlier part of his life continued, in accordance with his father's principles, to support the House of Hanover. But after the battle of Gladmuir, 21 September 1745, he joined Prince Charles, by whom he was received with great marks of distinction and esteem. He was made a Privy Councillor, Colonel of the Guards, and subsequently a General. He accompanied the Prince in his march to Derby,
and took a leading part in the battle of Falkirk, 17 January 1746. He was present at the battle of Culloden, 16 April, being taken prisoner there in consequence of a mistake he made in supposing a troop of English to be a body of FitzJames's horse. He was sent to London, and with Lords Cromartie and Balmerino was lodged in the Tower. The court was presided over by Lord Hardwicke as Lord High Steward, whose conduct on that occasion was strangely wanting in judicial impartiality. Kilmarnock and Cromartie both pleaded guilty on 1 August 1746, convicted of high treason and condemned to death.
The reasons which induced Lord Kilmarnock to take part in the attempted restoration of the House of Stuart are not known. "Various reasons are assigned for his defection; by some it was attributed to the influence of his wife, Lady Anne Livingstone, who was a catholic, and whose father,
fifth earl of Linlithgow, had been attainted for treason in 1715. Smollett, however, says: 'He engaged in the rebellion partly through the desperate situation of his fortune, and partly through resentment to the
government on his being deprived of a pension which he had for some time enjoyed.' this opinion is supported by Horace Walpole, who mentions that the pension was obtained by his father (Sir Robert Walpole) and stopped by Lord Wilmington. In his confession to Mr. James Foster - a dissenting
minister who attended him from the time sentence of death was passed on him to the day of his execution - the earl himself says: 'the true root of all was his careless and dissolute life, by which he had reduced himself to great and perplexing difficulties.' The persuasions of his wife, who was captivated by the affability of the young Pretender, no doubt influenced him in deserting the Hanoverian cause; but the hope of bettering his straitened fortunes by a change of dynasty must also be taken into account.
His estates were much encumbered when he succeeded to them, and a long course of dissipation and extravagance had plunged him into such embarrassment that his wife writes to him: 'After plaguing the stewart for a fortnight I have only succeeded in obtaining three shillings from him.' " (The Dictionary of National Biography, from Earlest time to 1900, vol II, Ed. by sir Leslie Stephen and Sir Sydney Lee, 1964, p 1010).
His petitions were unsuccessful, principally on account of the Duke of Cumberland professing to believe that he was responsible for the order alleged to have been given before the battle of Culloden, that no quarter was to be given to the English. Lady Anne materially contributed to the success of her party at Falkirk, by detaining General Hawley at Callender House on the eve of the battle.
Grand Master Mason of Scotland 1742. Having been attained for high treason in 1746, Lord Kilmarnock was not succeeded in the family honours by his son and heir, James.

(3a,6) 1760: Chosen a member of the Assembly. (6) It was said by his sons that when a membe r of the Assembly he attended the sessions in Philadelphia, leaving his home at two o'clock o f a Monday morning, taking with him on horseback one or both of his sons, then little boys . They would reach the ferry at Schuykill before noon, when he would cross immediately so a s to be on time for the opening of the session, committing to his boys the keeping of the hor se to be fed, and then taken home the same day. They carried their own provisions and proven der for the horse. The following Saturday the boys would be at the ferry again awaiting thei r father; thus they continued to do during the sessions, which lasted about six weeks. The co mpensation for this service was equivalent to $1.33 a day.

T4 William Boyd, b 10/2/1728 (Falkirk), d between 27th and 30th December 1780, unmarried. says m 1744/48 (Ireland) Charity Talbot, m 2ndly 17xx, Catherine McGrew and had 4 sons (does not say by which wife).
[Lived: ]- He entered the Royal Navy, joined H. M. S. Deptford 26 April 1744, as one of the retinue of Commodore Curtis Barnet. He was promoted A.B. 13 October 1744, and midshipman 25 September 1745. On 20 December 1745 Commodore Barnet shifted his flag to the Harwick, and Mr. Boyd was discharged to that ship on the same day, and appears to have remained in her until 31 December 1748, when hie is marked as discharged with the word 'preferment' in the 'Remarks' column. No further trace of him can be found, however, until 26 November 1755, when he was appointed ensign in the 8th Foot. He was gazetted ensign 54th Foot the same day, lieutenant same regiment, afterwards 52nd, 5 May 1756; captain 87th Foot 6 January 1760, and of the 114th Foot 17 October 1761. That regiment was disbanded in 1763, when he was placed on half-pay and his name disappeared from the Army List of 1768. (The Scots Peerage, vol 5, p 181)

The following BOYD family records were taken from typescript copies in the Wishart Archival Collection of the Erie County Historical Society, Erie, PA. They were donated to the Society by Elinor Wishart, the daughter of Edward R. Wishart, who compiled the records of his father, the Rev. Marcus Wishart of Waterford:
"Both William and Sarah were born in Ireland, he in 1731, she , 10 years later. When they made the perilous Voyage to America, I do not know, but in the course of time, they were settled in Northumberland Co., PA. There their sons and daughters, nine in number, were born and bred.
When the Revolutionary War broke out, William served his adopted country faithfully and well. At its conclusion, he settled down to ordinary life once more. But rumors of this wonderful new country, with its boundless opportunities, reached him and... in the year 1801, he, with his son David, who had just passed his maturity, rode to the little new town of Waterford, to spy out the land. They must have been most favorably impressed, for they hurried home, and soon the whole tribe of BOYDS, big and little, with all their possessions, were on their way to the Promised Land, on horseback, or in covered wagon.
William BOYD, in the winter of 1801-1802, in the company of Capt. John Tracy and his own sons David, John, and James BOYD, also his three daughters, and James Anderson, the husband of Margaret Boyd, one of William's daughters, settled in and about Waterford.
And here many of their children remain to this very day... All the older ones have passed to their Heavenly Heritage, but their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren still carry on..."

Conestoga. During the latter part of his life, he served the commission of a
justice of the peace. He was one of the charter members of Lodge 21, Paxtang,
and it's second Master. In his will he left a legacy to the lodge's charity
fund. Mr. Boyd died May 17, 1808, and is buried in Derry church Graveyard. He
married Jennett Brisben.

(1,2a) 1818, 18 Sep: Applied for pension for military service in Revolutionary War. (2a) I n Fleming County Kentucky, William BOYD, aged about 64, appeared in court and made oath; Tha t he enlisted under Captain CRESES in 1775, where he served 12 months and afterward enliste d under Captain CRAIG in the flying camp in Colonel BOYD's Regiment in July 1776. Afterward h e enlisted under Captain George BAYLOR, General WASHINGTON's Regiment, or Life Guard in 177 8 and was in succession, commanded by the above named captains. That he continued to serve i n the said different corps in the continental army against the Common enemy until 1780 when h e was honorably discharged from service in Pennsylvania. That he was in the battles of Monmou th, Long Island and others. Richard BOUSHER of Mason County, made oath: That he became acquai nted with William BOYD at the Siege of Boston, in 1775. That he was then attached to a compan y commanded by Captain Michael CRESES, being one of four independent companies raised by orde r of congress. The whole was commanded by Captain Hugh STEPHENSON of Virginia. That after th e Siege of Boston, said BOYD was stationed at Statant Island New York and served out a full p eriod of enlistment which was one year, and was discharged.
(2a) 1820, 4 Sep: William BOYD again appeared in court before Adam BEATTY, Judge of Flemin g County, Kentucky, and made oath similar as above. He also made schedule of his property an d stated that he was a shoemaker by trade, but that from age and inability, he is unable to w ork. He also stated that he had neither home nor family. A letter received May 29, 1821, by T homas DAUGHERTY, Esquire, In the House of Representatives, Washington, D.C., from George W. B OTTS, Flemingsburg, Kentucky, states in parts; "The inclosed papers are from William BOYD t o be used in his favor for a pension. He lives near the Upper Blue Licks; he has had Palsy fo r the past few years as I understood from him and this disease has bent him down so that hi s chin hangs low on his breast and it is scarcely in his power to raise it. Samuel BLACKBUR N who served with him desired for me to aid him having his schedule made and he brought him i n, for that purpose, to court." He further stated that last January, he inclosed papers for D aniel McINTYRE with testimony of David VINE and Will KENNAN, proving his services for the pur pose of obtaining a pension but that he had not hear from them. That he was inclosing schedul es of property for Gwinn (?) McKEE, Andrew WILSON, Wm. ESTELL and Will STOKER. He asked to b e written as to when they might be acted on.
