Gerard received a land grant 1 Sep 1782 for 235 acres on Catawba Mountain; again on 3 Apr 1794 he received another land grant for 310 acres adjoining his previous land. This began the migration of the Bric keys from Westmoreland County down the Shenandoah VAlley to Botetourt County. John Brickey, Sr was the first and only Brickey progenitor to come to America, landing first in South Carolina around 1680. His last name was spelled "DeBriqu e or Briquette." This was later changed to "Brickey" because it was the America n pronunciation. John stayed for about a year in South Carolina and they went t o Maryland. He left France during the St. Bartholomew Massacre in 1685. Accordi ng to the Brickey records, "the streets ran red with Huguenot blood." John made his escape with his family and migrated down to Westmoreland County, Virginia around the year 1710.

According to a family bible and the story there of the immigration of the our ancestors as told in the center page s in 1815, John Brickey came from France with his wife about the year 1680. So John Brickey (Jean Bricquet) was a devout French Huguenot, and gave up his fort une and escaped to England rather than become Catholi
John seems to have got himself into a lot of legal troubles upon arriving to America. This was probab ly due to the fact that he was unfamiliar with the customs. Between the years 1 690 and 1692 he had six suits of various plaintiffs filed against him in court. Most were dismissed. These suits can be found in the Westmoreland County Book 1690-1698, page 8, page 17A, page 28 and page 42. There is also a record of Joh n Brickey witnessing a deed on June 29, 1699.

Most of the following is t aken from an autobiography of John Compton Brickey written in 1855. John starte d his education at the age of twelve, attending school for six months of the ye ar, and walking two miles to get there. When he was sixteen his father gave per mission for him to study surveying by living with a tutor twenty miles from hom e. He worked for a time as a stone mason, building chimneys, and later ran his fathers distillery for a year. Then, he bought surveying instruments and moved to Maryville, Blount County, Tennessee. His surveying business was successful, but during the winters of his second and third years in Tennessee he began to s tudy Latin. He then studied law under the Hon. Enoch Parsons, obtained his lice nse to practice law in 1811, and made plans to move west of the Mississippi Riv er. About this time he fell in love with and married his first wife, Lydia Smit h, in Maryville. John and Lydia then moved to Missouri, first Belle Fountaine w here his law practice was not very successful, and later Potosi where he taught school. He was appointed a clerk of the County in 1814 and later also appointe d as a justice of the peace, a position that was more profitable than the clerk of court position. In 1820 his wife and a son, Josiah, died during an illness that hit the entire family. John married his second wife, Sally Brown, in 1825. During this time he resigned as clerk of court and started his law practice ag ain for a couple of years. He still couldn't support his family and returned to teaching which he did until 1834. His second wife, Sally, became ill and died in July of 1835. John remained in Potosi for a number of years, but by 1850 he was living with his son, John Compton Brickey Jr. in St. Genevieve County, Miss ouri. The Brickeys had a family reunion in 1852 at which time he presented a fa mily bible to his son, John Compton Brickey Jr Parents: Garrard BRICKEY and Amy COMPTON.
