Odo, bishop of Bayeux, in Normandy, half brother of the Conqueror, having with "divers monks and secular clerks" assisted at the battl e of Hastings "with their devout prayers and councils," had the whole county of Kent committed to his charge after the victory, and was joined with William Fi tzOsborne, one of the principal generals, afterwards Earl of Hereford, in the s uperintendency of the military forces of the kingdom as well in field as garris on. He was likewise a count palatine and a justiciary of England. In the Lent succeeding his coronation, King William having visited Normandy, Odo and Fitz-O sborne were constituted custodes Angliæ, or regents, during his absence, with a uthority to erect castles in all fit and proper places. Being thus seated in K ent, and so powerful that no man durst oppose him, he possessed himself of dive rs lordships belonging to the archbishopric of Canterbury, of which, when Lanfr anke became archbishop, a complaint was made by that prelate to the king, who i mmediately ordered a convocation of the men of Kent versed in old customs and u sages to sit upon the matter; a meeting took place, accordingly, at Penenden He ath, Geffrey, bishop of Constance, presiding for the king, when judgment was gi ven in favour of Lanfranke, viz.--"That he should enjoy the lands belonging to his church as freely as the king himself did enjoy his own demesne lands." In 1075, Odo and the bishop of Constance suppressed the rebellion of the Earls of Hereford and Norfolk; and in four years afterwards, being "next to the king" in authority, Odo was sent at the head of an army to waste Northumberland by reas on that the men of those parts had risen in insurrection and murdered Walcher, bishop of Durham. The Earl of Kent is accused of exercising great cruelty upon this occasion and of despoiling the church of Durham of some rich ornaments, am ongst which was a rare crosier of sapphire; certain it is, that his lordship wa s not proof against the seductions of unlimited power and that he became proud and oppressive; the more so, it was alleged, because it had been foretold by ce rtain soothsayers of Rome that he was destined, at no remote period, to fill th e papal chair, then the first throne in Christendom, and nothing short of that could now satisfy his ambition. He purchased a magnificent palace at Rome, atta ched the Senators to his interest by munificent gifts, and induced Hugh, Earl o f Chester, by promise of ample rewards, to accompany him with a chosen body of soldiers into Italy. King William becoming acquainted, however, with Odo's pro ceedings, hastened back to England and, casually meeting the earl at the head o f this pompous retinue in the Isle of Wight upon his route to Normandy, assembl ed the nobles together and in a passionate harangue impeached his conduct, conc luding by a command that the guards should seize upon the delinquent; but no on e daring to do so on account of his episcopal character, the king himself arres ted him, when Odo exclaimed, "That he was a clerk and a minister of God, and th at he was amenable to the papal authority by which alone he could be sentenced. " To this the king replied, "I neither sentence any clerk or bishop, but my own earl, whom I made my vice regent in my kingdom, resolving that he shall give a n account of that his trust." Odo was immediately conveyed into Normandy and, during the remainder of the Conqueror's reign, he was kept close prisoner in th e castle of Roan. He obtained his freedom, however, upon the accession of Rufu s and was restored to his Earldom of Kent, but not to the high office of judici ary, which had been conferred upon William, bishop of Durham.
