Alfred was conscripted into the confederate Army from his home ten miles from Fort Smith, Arkansas. His Papers states he enlisted June 18, 1862, and was listed as a deserter June 16, 1863, almost a year later. He was in the battle of Prairie Grove when he threw away his gun and ran. But was captured, Court Marshaled, and sentenced to be shot at dawn, but escaped at Camden, Arkansas. Barefoot with with no pants on, cold and hungry, he made it home after a weeks walk. Then he enlisted in the Union Army on October 1, 1863, and was mustered in on December 22, 1863. He mustered out with the regiment on August 8, 1865. He was with the 2nd Reg. of the Arkansas /infantry Volunteers. His rank was Pvt. While in Co. C. 1/25 Arkansas Infantry, "Kings Reg. Arkansas Infantry.
