After Squire Thomas Choate was killed by Tories, his family continued to
live at their home outside the "Settlement" in SouthC arolina. Indians
were a source of danger and fear for the colonists at thisti me,
especially to those who sought to live away from the "settlement"
Warni ng of an Indian raid came one day while Elizabeth Choate was weaving
clothto make clothing for her children. Thet left hurriedly for the
"settlement" leav ing their home and belongings to the mercies of the
Indians. When the danger was passed, she felt it her duty to return and
investigate the results ofthe raid. She prepared food for her and one
of her sons, who was armed with a sho tgun, and returned to the cabin home
which had luckily escaped destruction. W hile the son stood guard outside
the house and watched for any sign of danger , she wove cloth, never
stopping for two days and nights except to eat of the food they had
brought. Upon completion of the web of cloth, she cut it from the loom
and they hurriedly and safely returned to the settlement.

Choat in his lifetime executed his last will &te stament and afterwards
became dissatisfied with said will and expressed his i ntention to alter
it but did not, owing to his sickness & whereas great diffi culties and
lawsuits are about to spring up between the heirs & legatees of s aid
estate and which will be wholly ruinous to the heirs & legatees of said
estate and in effect make the lawyers & officers of Court the true heirs
of said estate, now for the purpose of preventing said result we the
rightfulhei rs do mutually agree that said estate both real and personal
shall descend as though Thomas Choat our ancestor had died without a will
and that said estat e shall be administered on in the same way as if
Thomas Choat had died intest ate. But in as much as we all know that it
always was the wish of our ancesto r Thomas Choat to give Edward more than
any of us, in consideration thereof w e, to wit, James R. Choat & his
wife, Prudence, John D. Shoat, James Hollis a nd his wife, Rhody, Nancy
Barefoot and Susannah Choat, nine in all agree to p ay Edward fifty
dollars each out of our shares, making Edward's share four hu ndred and
fifty dollars more than any of our shares. In testimony whereofwe h ave
hereunto set our hands & affixed our seals this 24 day of June 1837"
