     Margaret Liebet Jacob wrote she 'was called after two aunts, Margaret on my mother's side, and Liebet my father's sister.4' She was born on 6 December 1917 at 129 Hamilton Terrace, St John's Wood, London, England; and her birth was recorded in the December quarter 1917 at Marylebone Registration district.5,6,1,7,8 She was the daughter of George Grenville Jacob and Phoebe Marion Green.2 Margaret Liebet Jacob was 'a woodwind student and daughter of a long established and observant Anglo-Jewish family, George and Phoebe Jacob (nee Green). Their origins in Britain dated back to the 17th century'. For a full biography see Martin Sugarman's article on her husband Simmon Latutin.8 As of 1940, her married name was Latutin.9 She married Captain Simmon Latutin GC, son of Morris Latutin and Freda Krafchig, on 14 March 1940 at London, England; and their marriage was recorded in the March quarter 1940 at Marylebone Registration district, London. This has been indexed as 'Simmon Latukin' with name of person married 'Jacob'; an announcement was published in The Times four days afterwards. They had met at the Royal Academy of Music.10,11,9,12,8 Margaret Liebet Jacob lived on 30 December 1944 at Harrow, Middlesex, England; at the time her husband was killed in the Second World War, in Kenya, East Africa. He was later awarded a postumous George Cross.13 She was executrix for her husband and Administration was granted to her at Llandudno on 21 June 1945.14

She lived in 1946 at 62 Walton Drive, Harrow, Middlesex, England.15 She and Michael Liebert were engaged on 17 November 1948; and an announcement was placed in The Times.16 As of December 1948, her married name was Liebert.17,18,19 Margaret Liebet Jacob married Michael Liebert in December 1948 at Cape Town City Hall, Cape Town, South Africa; and Margaret wrote they were married by an 'Afrikaner registrar.17,20,21,19,4,8' Margaret Liebet Jacob travelled in 1949 from Southampton, Hampshire, England, to Cape, South Africa, with daughters Ann and Elizabeth Latutin.22 She and Michael Liebert moved to the UK from South Africa in August 1953.8 Margaret Liebet Jacob was executrix for her Father-in-law Morris Latutin after his death on 16 June 1953 and given as Personal Representative in The London Gazette published on 1 December 1953.23' She was the author of a scale workbook Top-knots and Tail-pieces for the Clarinet, published in the name of Margaret Latutin on 1 November 1996.24,25 She lived on 7 July 2006 at Goode Court, Bream Road, Lydney, Gloucestershire, England.26 She died on 6 April 2009 at Lydney, Gloucestershire, England, at age 91.7

     Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein was born in 1873 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; and his birth was recorded in Victoria.8,7,9 He was the son of Michaelis Hallenstein and Rebecca Hart.7 Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 17 Randolph Crescent, Maida Vale, London, England, as Son age 7, birthplace Melbourne, Victoria, and he was a Scholar.7 He emigrated on 19 August 1895; A 'Mr E.M. Hallenstein' was included in the "Christchurch Star" of Monday 19 August 1895 in the 'List of passengers booked for New Zealand on the "Gothic."10 '

He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at St James, Westminster, London, England, as Single, age 27, born Victoria, Australia, and he was a Porter believed to be living in the same Household as his brother Edward.11 He was listed in 'The London London Gazette Issue 27390 published on the 24 December 1901' as follows:

     'ROYAL ENGINEERS (VOLUNTEERS).
     "East London" (Tower Hamlets), The under-mentioned Lieutenants to be Captains :—
     E. M. Hallenstein. Dated 25th December, 1901.12'

He was listed as Hallenstein Bros. & Co. New Zealand Shippers, 17 and 18 Basinghall Street, telephone Central 4971 between 1902 and 1924.13 He was executor to his father and The National Probate Calendar 1904 for England and Wales has this entry: 'Hallenstein Michaelis of Basinghall-street London died 16 October 1904 at 26 Oriental-place Brighton Probate London 15 November to Rosetta Hallenstein widow Edward Ruben Hallenstein and Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein merchants and Samuel Octavius Lazarus metal broker.'

The Archives of New Zealand, Dunedin Regional Office, contain Probate files for 'Hallenstein Michaelis - London - Merchant', from Dunedin High Court, New Zealand, dated 1905. The Public Record Office of Victoria, Australia, has a similar entry with Grant Date 11 October 1905.14,15 He was executor for his step-mother and The National Probate Calendar 1906 has a record for 'Hallenstein Rosetta of 29 Wimpole-street Middlesex widow died 18 October 1906 Probate London 3 December to Edward Ruben Hallenstein and Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein merchants.16' He married Anna Frances Jacob, daughter of Alexander Moss Jacob and Leah Jones Myer, in 1908 at London, England; and their marriage was registered in the September quarter 1908 at Paddington Registration district.17,8,18,19 Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein was listed in 'The London Gazette Issue 28190 published on the 30 October 1908' as follows:

The household contained his Wife and three Servants: Cook, Parlourmaid and Housemaid; no mention is made of his first Son.24 Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein was also known as Ernest Melbourne Halstead He is also referred to in some records as Ernest Halstead.25 Ernest Melbourne Hallenstein was also known as Ernest Melbourne Halsted by Deed Poll.26,3,27,28,29,30,31 He lived on 2 April 1921 at 17/18 Basinghall Street, City of London, London, England; according to Donald Hallenstein (Farmer), who gave his name as his nearest relative of friend in the country whence he came, as 'Friends E. M. Halstead', when he arrived in New York on the SS "Mauretania" which sailed from Southampton and arrived in New York on 2 April 1921.32 He was executor and the 1933 National Probate Calendar reads: 'Jacob Leah of 14 Westbourne-terrace Hyde Park Middlesex widow died 22 August 1933 at the Old Cottage Creeksea near Burnham-on-Crouch Essex Probate London 24 October to George Grenville Jacob merchant Edwin Ellis Jacob esquire and Ernest Melbourne Halsted merchant.33' He was noted in 'The History of the Bayswater Synagogue 1863-1963' records:

     'Ernest M Halsted created an unforgettable name for his service to the Jewish Lads' Brigade......34'

He was executor to his wife and The 1936 National Probate Calendar records: 'Halsted Anna Frances of 11 Craven Hill Hyde Park Middlesex (wife of Ernest Melbourne Halsted) died 20 December 1935 Probate London 3 February to the said Ernest Melbourne Halsted merchant'.35

He died on 16 October 1951 at London, England; and his death was recorded at Marylebone Registration district in the December quarter 1951, at age 78.36,37 He was the subject of an obituary in The Jewish Chronicle which described him as a 'great leader...' on 26 October 1951.37 His estate was probated in 1952; and The Archives of New Zealand, Dunedin Regional Office, contain Probate files for 'HALSTED Ernest Melbourne - London', from Dunedin High Court, New Zealand, dated 1952.15
