     Cleova Philbrook was born circa 1836 at Woodham Walter, Essex, England.^2,3 She was the daughter of John Philbrick and Ann Glasscock.² Cleova Philbrook appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Street, Woodham Walter, Essex, England, as Cleova Philbrook, age 6 and she was born in the county.² She died before 24 June 1849 at Woodham Walter, Essex, England.¹ She was buried on 24 June 1849 at St Michael, Woodham Walter, Essex, England; and she was age 13, of Woodham Walter.¹

      Montague Samuel Jones also went by the name of Montie Durlacher.⁴ He was born on 6 June 1880 at 8 Stranraer Place, Maida Vale, London, England; and his birth was recorded as Montague Samuel Jones at Kensington Registration district in the September quarter 1880.^4,5,3 He was the son of Edward Newton Jones and Frances Susannah Durlacher.⁴ Montague Samuel Jones appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 3 Stranraer Place, Paddington, London, England, as Montague Jones, 'Son-in-law' [however should be Grandson of the Head of household M Durlacher where his parents were living], age 9 months, birthplace Paddington, Middlesex.⁶

'Durlacher Edward Newton of 15 Old Burlington-street Middlesex died 17 March 1923 Probate London 21 April to Hubert William Durlacher manager Montague Samuel Durlacher esquire and Marcus Reginald Anthony Samuel merchant.' on 21 April 1923.¹¹ He lived on 1 May 1923 at 15 Old Burlington Street, Regents Street, London, England; when he was an Executor of his father's will.¹² He married Marjorie Janet Hastings in 1927 at London, England; and their marriage as Montague S Durlacher and Marjorie J Hastings was recorded at St Martin Registration district in the March quarter 1927.^13,14 Montague Samuel Jones and Marjorie Janet Hastings lived between 1932 and 1936 at 68 Cresent Road, Wood Green, London, England; and they were on the Electoral Register.¹⁵ Montague Samuel Jones died in 1943.¹³

He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at Bridge House, Great Casterton, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, as Assistant to Thomas Eayrs who was a Farmer, age 26, single, birthplace Kilburn, London, and he was a 'Farm Pupil'. The household also contained Mrs Mary Eayrs, their 7 children, two other Assistants and a General Domestic Servant.⁹ He saw service during the Great War [WWI 1914-1918] in the Army Service Corps, Motor Transport, and The National Archives contain his British Army Medal Roll Index Card which shows he qualified for the Victory Medal, the British War Medal and the 1914 Star plus Emblems. It notes Captain C Durlacher applied for his medals on 30 January 1921, giving his address as 5 Eaton Road, Hove, Sussex, and c/o F Durlacher Esq, Pebblecombe, Walton on the Hill, Tadworth, Surrey.^10,11

He married Gladys Ivy Carrion Armstrong in 1918 at Middlesex, England; and their marriage was recorded at St Giles Registration district in the June quarter 1918.¹² Cyril Charles Henry Durlacher was working in the car trade after the war and it was reported in an article in the Auto-Motor Journal of 13 March 1924 by Edgar N Duffield titled '"AUTO" ROAD TRIALS. LXII.-The 15.5 H.P. Diatto' that the 2 litre Diatto was introduced to Britain by Captain Cyril Durlacher A.M.I.A.E., of 6 Upper St. Martins Lane, London, W,C.2. Duffield was test driven in the car by Cyril Durlacher and reported on his findings concluding that he considered it sound and at a price that could not be thought of as high. Made by the Soc. Anon. Auto Diatto, of Turin, Italy, the sole concessionaire was Cyril Durlacher and articles appeared in the Auto-Motor Journal to around 1929, together with photographs of the car, in some instances being driven by Cyril Durlacher. In the 10 June 1926 issue of the magazine he is advertising as selling the car at 20 Swallow Street, Piccadilly, W.1.¹³

He was executor of Harry Montague Durlacher (who died 20 September 1928) on 24 November 1928.^14,15,16 He and Gladys Ivy Carrion Armstrong lived on 29 September 1939 at London, England; where they were on the 1939 Register in the St Marylebone area.¹⁷ Cyril Charles Henry Durlacher married Winifred Alice Rowe in 1949 at London, England; and their marriage was recorded at Marylebone Registration district in the March quarter 1949.¹⁸ Cyril Charles Henry Durlacher died in 1968 at Sussex, England; and his death was recorded at Worthing Registration district in the December quarter 1968.¹⁹

     William Henry Lee was baptized on 25 July 1830 at St Peter, Walworth, Southwark, Surrey, England.^2,3 He married Emma Scotcher, daughter of Charles Scotcher and Elizabeth Hall, on 26 December 1853 at St Mary, Bryanston Square, Westminster, London, England; and their marriage was recorded at Marylebone record office in the December quarter 1853.^4,5 William Henry Lee appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at St Marylebone, Middlesex, England, as Head, married, age 31, birthplace Walworth, Surrey.² He appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at St Marylebone, Middlesex, England, as Head, married, age 41, birthplace Camberwell, Surrey.⁶ He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at St Marylebone, Middlesex, England, as Head, married, age 51, birthplace Camberwell, Surrey.⁷ He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at Hampstead, London, England, as Head, married, age 61, birthplace Lambeth, London.⁸

     Lt.-Col. Ernest Samuel Hyam O.B.E. was born on 8 October 1872 at 62 Inverness Terrace, Westminster, London, England; and his birth was recorded in the December quarter 1872 at Kensington Registration district.^1,6,3,7 He was the son of Frederick Michael Hyam (1844-1914) and Florence St Losky (1849-1907).^8,5,9 On 10 July 1875 his name was legally changed to Ernest Samuel Halford.^10,11 He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 35 Inverness Terrace, Paddington, London, England, as Son, age 8, birthplace Paddington, Middlesex, and he was a Scholar.¹² He was educated; at St Paul's School.¹³ He married Constance Rachel Mosely, daughter of Benjamin Ephraim Mosely and Adeline Hyam, on 19 June 1895 at New West End Synagogue, St Petersburgh Place, Bayswater, London, England; and their marriage was recorded in the June quarter of 1895 at Paddington Registration district.^14,3 Lt.-Col. Ernest Samuel Hyam O.B.E. appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Sussex, England, as married, age 29, born Paddington, London, and he was a Stock Broker's Agent.¹⁵


In 1909 'The Colonel' met John Percy Mitchelhill [JP](1879-1966) and they were to become best 'pals'.

'After his career as an impresario and manager..., J.P. went on in later years to provide accommodation and scholarships for budding young actors and actresses. The medical world - both hospitals and individual nurses - also benefitted from his personal generosity and from the Halford Trust funds which he administered'

Peter Cotes's book J.P. The Man Called Mitch contains a great deal more biographical information about Ernest Samuel Halford including several letters written by him to J.P. Montpelier House was purchased with money from the Halford Trust Fund in 1937. Described as '... a most unusual building in Brecknock Road, on the borders of Kentish Town, in a densely populated working-class district ... it was 150 years old and was situated in grounds of 1¾ acres'. In 1955 JP purchased Montpelier House from the Halford Trust.^16,17


He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at 6 Pembridge Place, Notting Hill, London, England, as 'Son', age 38, birthplace Paddington, London, and he was a Mortgage and Insurance Broker. Ernest Samuel Hyam O.B.E. lived on 27 May 1929 at 18 Clarges Street, London, England.²⁶ He married Madeleine Kordy on 9 October 1929 at Kensington, London, England; and their marriage was recorded at Kensington Registration district in the December quarter 1929.^24,27,28 Lt.-Col. Ernest Samuel Hyam O.B.E. and Madeleine Kordy had their marriage announced in The Times.      John Alfred Davis was born in 1863 at Liverpool, Lancashire, England; and his birth was recorded at Liverpool Registration district in the September quarter 1863.^4,3 He was the son of Louis Davis and Annie Jones.² John Alfred Davis appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 109 Bedford Street, Liverpool, Lancashire, England, as Son, age 7, birthplace Liverpool, Lancashire, and he was a Scholar.⁵ He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 109 Bedford Street, Liverpool, Lancashire, England, as Son, age 17, birthplace Liverpool, Lancashire, and he was an 'Apprentice Silk Mercer.⁶' He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 4 Livingstone Avenue, Toxteth Park, Lancashire, England, as Head, single, age 27, birthplace Liverpool, Lancashire, and he was employed as a Foreman Tailor.⁷ He married Rose Moss in 1898 at London, England; and their marriage was recorded in the June quarter 1898 at Paddington Registration district.^1,2 John Alfred Davis appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Hampstead, London, England, as Head, married, age 37, born Liverpool, and he was a Merchant Tailor.⁸ He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at 12 Goldhurst Terrace, Hampstead, London, England, as Head, age 47, married 1863, birthplace Liverpool, and he was a Merchant Tailor. Davis 'in business' together at 49 Maddox Street, [Mayfair] London, which was 'the London address of the business run by Alexander and John. Alexander ran the Paris branch'. Listed in various Trade Directories there were several firms at this address including a military tailors for several years by the name of Samuelson & Son and also Robins & Co. who made costumes, 'Ladies' Tailor-made.^11,12' John Alfred Davis died on 7 February 1929 at 4 Dorset Square, Middlesex, England; and his death was recorded at Marylebone Registration district in the March quarter 1929.^2,13,14 His estate was probated on 3 May 1929; and he was of 49 Maddox Street, Middlesex.¹³

H. & Co; Kurt Israel; Merchant; 54, Lower Thames Street, E.C.3.' on 6 November 1936.⁶ Kurt Israel was listed as an Export Agent in the Post Office Directory in 1938 at 54 Lower Thames Street, London, England.⁷ He and Joyce Henrietta Jones Finestone lived between 1939 and 1963 at 68 Raglan Court, Empire Way, Wembley Park, Middlesex, England.⁸ Kurt Israel was recorded as a UK Incoming Passenger on The Pretoria Castle sailing from Durban, South Africa, having embarked at Madeira, to Southampton, England. He was 50, a Producer, returning to 68 Raglan Court, Wembley Park, Middlesex with his Wife on 31 July 1953.⁹ He died on 15 May 1961 at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London, England, and his death as Kurt Israel was recorded at Paddington Registration district in the June quarter 1961 aged 58.^10,11,12 His estate was probated on 30 June 1961; and the 1961 National Probate Calendar records Kurt Israel was 'of 68 Raglan Court Empire Way Wembley Park Wembley Middlesex' and Probate was granted at London 'to Joyce Henrietta Jones Israel widow.¹²'

      Armand Mancus was also known as Aaron Mancus.^2,3 He was born circa 1868 at Vilna, Russia.^1,4,5,3,6 He was the Son of Benjamin Mancus (age 49 in 1891, birthplace Vilna, Russia, an employer and Tailor) and Galley Mancus (age 48 in 1891, birthplace Vilna, Russia).³ He arrived with his parents and siblings in England and settled in Wolverhampton in 1889.² He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 9 Clement Street, Ladywood, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, as Aaron Mancus, Son, age 23, birthplace Vilna, Russia, and he was employed as a Glass Painter Artist; he was with his parents and siblings: Harry, age 20 and a Draper's Traveller, Ziliah, age 18 and a Tailoress, Eli, age 15 and a Tailor, and a Russian Boarder who was also a Tailor.³ He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 55 Poplar Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, as Son, age 33, birthplace Russia, and he worked as a Tailor's Cutter. He was with his parents - Benjamin and 'Mary' - and brother Edward, age 24.⁷ He was naturalized and The National Archives contain the following file: 'Nationality and Naturalisation: Mancus, Armand, from Russia. Resident in Birmingham. Certificate 19103 issued 2 June 1910'. There is also similar information on Eli Asher Mancus.^8,9 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at Parks Farm, Evesham, Worcestershire, England, as Visitor, age 39, birthplace Russia, and he was a Tailor, visiting James Barouche another Tailor.^10,2

He married Elizabeth Miriam Jones, daughter of Alexander Jones and Henrietta Myers, on 16 September 1913 at Old Hebrew Congregation, Liverpool, Lancashire, England; and their marriage, as Elizabeth M Jones and Armand Mancus, was recorded at Toxteth Park Registration district, Liverpool, in the September quarter 1913. It was also recorded in Liverpool Old Hebrew Congregation Marriage Register.^{1,11,12,13,14} Armand Mancus was a merchant tailor. The following listing appeared under Tailors in the Birmingham Trades & Traders section of Bennett's Business Directory for Warwickshire, 1914: 'Mancus, 6 & 6a Easy Row'.^12,15

He died on 19 November 1926 at Staffordshire, England; and his death was recorded at West Bromwich Registration district in the December quarter 1926.^16,17 He was buried after 19 November 1926 at Old Witton Cemetery, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England; and a picture of the gravestone is on the internet, permission applied for to display image on website.¹⁷ He left a will; and the National Probate Calendar, London, for 1927 contains the following entry:

'Mancus Armand of 24 The Drive Robert-road Handsworth Birmingham died 19 November 1926 Administration (with Will) Birmingham 25 January to Elizabeth Miriam Mancus widow.¹⁸'

      Her married name was Foy.¹ Elizabeth Mary Aubury was born in 1886 at Berkshire, England; and her birth was recorded at Easthampstead registration office in the September quarter 1886.³ She married Digby Francis Foy, son of John Foy and Janet Tedder, in 1914; and their marriage was recorded at Easthampstead record office in the March quarter 1914.¹

      Catherine Benjamin also went by the name of Kate.³ Her married name was Solomon.² She was born circa 1808 at London, England.^3,4 She was the daughter of Joel Benjamin and Rachel Levy.² Catherine Benjamin married Joseph Solomon circa 1830; and they had five children.⁵ Catherine Benjamin appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Broadmead, St James, Bristol, Avon, England, as age 35 and she was born in the county.¹ She appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at Bristol, Avon, England, as Catherine Solomon, Head, widowed, age 42, birthplace London, Middlesex, and she was a Clothier.⁴ She appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at 11-12 Colmore Row, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, as Visitor of John Aaron and Dinah Benjamin, widow, age 56, birthplace London, and she was a Retired Shopkeeper. Her daughter Rachel Solomon was Assistant to the Head of the household.⁶

     Joseph Solomon was born circa 1807; in Gloucestershire.^3,2 He married Catherine Benjamin, daughter of Joel Benjamin and Rachel Levy, circa 1830; and they had five children.¹ Joseph Solomon appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Broadmead, St James, Bristol, Avon, England, as age 30, born in the county and he was a Taylor and Draper.² He died in 1849 at Gloucestershire, England; and his death was recorded at Bristol Registration district in the December quarter 1849.^4,5

Her Father was Henry Calland, Cabdriver and his Father, Edward Philbrock was a Carter.
