     George Alfred Yates M.A. was born on 2 November 1908 at Sefton Drive, Liverpool, Lancashire, England; and his birth was registered in the December quarter 1908 at Toxteth Park Registration district.1,2 He was the son of Ellis Keyser Yates and Julia Mosely.1 George Alfred Yates M.A. appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at 20 Sefton Drive, Toxteth Park, Lancashire, England, as Son, age 2, birthplace Liverpool.3 He was educated circa 1920; according to his entry in the 'Register of Twentieth-Century Johnians', Volume 1, 1900-1949 (St John's College, 2004) was as follows:

     'YATES, George Alfred (1927) Born 2 November 1908, 20 Sefton Drive, Liverpool; son of Ellis Keyser Yates, Tobacco Merchant, and Julia Moseley. Subject(s): Oriental Languages; BA 1931; MA 1934. Tutor(s): M P Charlesworth. Educ: Preparatory School, Liverpool; Liverpool College; Clifton College. Awards: Rogerson Scholarship, SJC 1926; John Stewart of Rannoch Open Scholarship in Hebrew, University of Cambridge 1927. Died 20 June 1949'.

     According to the 'Historical Register of the University of Cambridge' (published periodically by Cambridge University Press), in the edition for 1921-30, he gained Part I of the Oriental Language Tripos (taking papers in Hebrew and Aramaic) in 1929 and got a First. His College record shows he got an aegrotat for Part II Oriental Languages, Hebrew and Aramaic in 1931.

His entry in The Clifton College Register 1862 to 1947 (J.W.Arrowsmith Ltd, Bristol, 1947) reads:

     'Jan 1922 9033 Montagu-Yates, Rev. George Alfred (formerly YATES, G.A.); b.2.11.08; PH [Polack House]; IV[gamma]-VI; P[raeposter]; L[eft] 1927; Rogerson Schol., St. John's, Camb; Stewart of Rannoch Hebrew Schol; 1st Cl. Oriental Lang. Trip; M.A; Min, Religion; Warden, Helford Priory; Research Schol., Author and Lect; Hon.Dir., Quakerly Welfare Work among P.o.W.s in Cornwall; formerly Hon. Asst. Editor, 'Roy. Asiatic Soc's. Journ.', and contributor to The Times and other leading journs; Editor, 'In Spirit and in Truth, Aspects of Judaism and Christianity' (1934); Helford Priory, Cornwall.1,4,5,6'

He was the author of of 'In Spirit and in Truth' published in 1934; it was 'a book edited by him for the Society of Jews and Christians' and was the 'First Jewish Christian symposium ever published in England.1,7,8'

He was described in 'The Samuel Family of Liverpool and London' as being involved in 'Private tutoring, oriental studies. Communal, social and religious work. [He was a] Lay Reader, Reform synagogues.1'

He died on 20 June 1949 at "Kemps", Winsford, Somerset, England, at age 40; and his death was registered in the September quarter 1949 at Exmoor Registration district.9,1,10 He was the subject of an obituary and the biographical archive at St John's College, Cambridge, contains the following newspaper cutting from 'The Times' of 24 June 1949:

     'YATES.—On June 20, 1949, in his sleep, GEORGE ALFRED YATES, dearly loved son of Julia Yates and the late Ellis K. Yates. No flowers, please.11,12'

He was buried on 27 June 1949 at Hoop Lane Cemetery, Golders Green, London, England; and Laurence Harris of JGSGB says:

     'There are five Hebrew letters at the bottom of the inscription (although you can only easily see four). It is a standard Hebrew abbreviation which appears on many Jewish Headstones which translates to “May his soul be bound up in the bonds of (everlasting) life”. A photograph of the gravestone is on the internet.13,1,10

Published in 1958, 'The Samuel Family of Liverpool and London' contained the following biographical information: 'Communal worker. Formerly Girl Guide Captain. Blood donor since 1940. Second World War: First Aid Post, Civil Defence, 1940-5; factory war work, 1944-5. Welfare Section, Civil Defence since 1949...1' She lived on 29 September 1939 at Devon, England; where she was recorded on the 1939 Register in the area of St Thomas with her mother.4 Her name was included in a notice in 'The London Gazette Issue 38503 published on the 4 January 1949' regarding her late uncle Martin Ephraim Mosley's estate.5 The following notice appeared in 'The London Gazette Issue 38503 published on the 30 May 1961' concerning her late mother's estate:-

'Julia Yates Address: Little Common, Plaistow, Sussex. Description: Widow. Death of deceased: 23 April 1961. Names, addresses and descriptions of Persons to whom notices of claims are to be given and names, in parentheses, of Personal Representatives: Cotching & Son, 17 London Road, Horsham, Sussex, Solicitors. (Midland Bank Executor and Trustee Company Limited and Kate Margaret Yates).6

She died on 4 January 1991 at Sussex, England, at age 80; and her death was recorded at Haywards Heath Registration district in January 1991.7,8 Her estate was probated on 5 April 1991; at Brighton and she was 'of Ashton Hse Bolnore Rd Haywards Heath W Sx.9'

ABC News ran the headline 'ABC TV gardening pioneer Heinze dies' :

'Heinze hosted the ABC's longest running television gardening program, Sow What, from the black-and-white days in 1967 through to 1988.

'He was known for his signature sign-off at the end of each program: "Cheerio for now".

'The program was produced at his home property at Montrose on the outskirts of Melbourne.

'He was also the celebrity gardener on ABC Radio until four years ago.

'Heinze and his wife Jill were heavily involved in promoting gardening in schools and raising money for cancer research. The Heinzes lost their eight-year-old daughter Kim to cancer in 1974.

'Heinze also started the School Garden Awards in Victoria and established a garden centre 30 years ago for children with disabilities.1,7,8' He was buried on 9 September 2008 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.3,7 He was the subject of an obituary in the Sydney Morning Herald with a full biography 'TV pioneer sowed goodness' which started:

'When the Queen invested Kevin Heinze as a member of the Order of Australia for services to gardening, cancer research and children, she remarked: "That's an interesting combination!"

'Heinze was essentially a gardener. He was Victoria's best-known gardener and his influence as a pioneer of television and radio gardening programs reached throughout Australia, paving the way for today's less self-effacing gardeners...' on 10 September 2008.1,3,9,10 He was commemorated in 'Final cheerio for garden guru' in The Uppa Yarra Mail on 16 September 2008.11
