Thomas Taylor Bowie was born on 11 August 1905 at 9 Forester's Buildings, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland.1 He was the son of Robert Bowie and Margaret T Taylor.1 Thomas Taylor Bowie visited Canada arriving on 4 April 1925 at Halifax on The Anchor Donaldson Line's Ship Athenia, aged 19, nationaltiy British. On his return was listed on the Incoming Passenger List for The Anchor Donaldson Line's Ship Athenia, disembarking on 18 October 1925 at Glasgow, Scotland. His Port of Departure was Montréal, Québec, Canada and he gave his occupation as Sculptor, aged 20, United Kingdom address 24 Castle Street, Edinburgh, intending to remain in Scotland.2,3

He married Isabella Latto Bell on 18 April 1931 at 11 Royal Terrace, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.4

On 16 May 1953 Thomas, age 47, left Southampton, England, for Quebec, Canada, sailing on the Home Line's Atlantic accompanied by his son David. His occupation was Sculptor and their last address in the United Kingdom was 34 Balbirnie Street, Markinch, Fife, Scotland.5,6,7 To see seven examples of his sculptures in Post 1940 Art Deco Style reliefs/bas-reliefs photographed on the internet search Google Images.8

The following information on the History of the Guild Inn, situated East of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, appears on Guildwood Village Association website: 'The Sculpture Studio was built by Aage Madsen, a Danish wood sculptor. Over the years it has been home to a number of artists and sculptors including: Thomas Bowie during his first term as Director of Sculpture at the Ontario College of Art. (from 1953-1960).9,10'

Thomas Taylor Bowie was listed on the Incoming to the UK Passenger List for The Cunard Steamship Co. Ltd. Carinthia, Port of Departure: Montréal, Québec, Canada, arriving at Greenock, Scotland, giving his address in the UK as 11 Bonnygate, Cupar, Fife, visiting for three months from Canada where he had been resident for more than 12 months, disembarking on 7 June 1957.11 One of his sons writes: 'Dad was a fairly well-known sculptor who worked with the Pilkington-Jackson studio in Edinburgh. Pilkington-Jackson was a good amateur sculptor but had the necessary contacts to get good commissions. After Dad came to Canada, P[ilkington]-J[ackson] got the commission to do the Robert the Bruce monument at Bannockburn. He brought Dad back to Scotland for one summer to do that sculpture - so although the official artist is P[ilkington]-J[ackson], it was actually Dad who did the entire thing. At that time Dad was the head of the Sculpture Department at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto.12'

He was listed in the following publication on Google Book Search: Index to Artistic Biography: First Supplement by Patricia Pate Havlice as 'Canadian sculptor'. The Dictionary of Scottish Art & Architecture by Peter J. M. McEwan also on Google Book Search refers to him as 'BOWIE, Thomas Taylor II 1931-1948 Edinburgh sculptor who latterly moved to Falkland, Fife. Exhibited occasional works at the RSA between the above dates. ...13,14'
