David Stowell was born on 28 November 1849 at Woodham Walter, Essex, England; and his birth was recorded at Maldon Registration district in the March quarter 1850.1,3,4 He was the son of Jeremiah Stowell and Rebecca Philbrook.1 David Stowell was baptized on 29 September 1850 at St Michael, Woodham Walter, Essex, England.5 He appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at Woodham Walter, Essex, England, as Son, age 18 months, birthplace Woodham Walter, Essex.6 He appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at Woodham Walter, Essex, England, as Son, age 11, birthplace Woodham Walter, Essex.1

The ship Ramsey left Gravesend, Kent, England, on 27 March 1870 and arrived at Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand, on 16 June1870. The Captain was E Hunt and the ship carried 184 Government immigrants including David Stowell- he was single, age 20, from Essex, occupation Dairyman.7 He married Sarah Elizabeth Day on 23 September 1874 at Highfield, Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand; and according to a 2008 website: 'This busy coastal south island port and holiday resort is a gateway to the mountains, lakes and rivers of the Central South Island. The town is known for its elegant Victorian and Edwardian buildings, made of volcanic bluestone. Timaru's focal point is beautiful Caroline Bay. This well-equipped and safe swimming beach is bordered by a 20ha reserve which has children's playgrounds, gardens, tennis courts, an aviary, a skating rink and plenty of carparking'.8,9

David Stowell was listed in the New Zealand Offical Year Book with Clerks and Interpreters in 1893.10 He was reported as follows in the Timaru Herald of 23 March 1897: 'A most painful and somewhat serious accident occurred on Monday morning last to Mr David Stowell, farmer, of St. Andrew's. While removing the leg-rope from a young cow, usually a quiet one, she without any warning kicked viciously and struck Mr Stowell in the face, knocking him to the ground unconscious and causing a severe shock to the system. Dr Bowe was telegraphed for and on his arrival pronounced the cheek bone to be badly broken, but could not tell until the swelling has been reduced whether or not an operation to unite the bones will be necessary. Mr Stowell is progressing favourably.11'

He was the subject of a biographical account of Farmers in The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Canterbury Provincial Direct] published in 1903:

'Stowell, David, J.P., Farmer, “Brompton,” St. Andrews. Mr. Stowell was born in Essex, England, in 1849. His early life was spent on farms in Essex and Hertfordshire. At the age of sixteen he went to work in a foundry at Maldon, where he stayed for twelve months. Thence he went to London, and was employed in the wholesale and retail fruit trade for nearly two years. He then was employed for over two years in the Model Dairy, South Kensington, and came to New Zealand in the ship “Ramsay,” landing at Lyttelton in June, 1870. Mr. Stowell worked on a farm at Rolleston for a short time, and then travelled through North Canterbury and the provinces of Nelson and Marlborough, and back to South Canterbury. In 1871, he was employed fencing on the Pareora estate. The following year he went to the Bluecliffs estate, where he remained till 1874. He then bought a small farm at Otaio, but sold it in 1878, and took up the farm where he now resides. In addition to working this farm, Mr. Stowell rented 450 acres at Otaio. The Brompton farm is one of the most fertile in the district; the wheat crop has yielded eighty bushels per acre, and oats as high as 116 1/2 bushels per acre. Mr. Stowell has taken an active interest in all local matters affecting the district. He was a member of the first school committee at Upper Otaio; he was the first chairman of St. Andrews school committee in 1880, and is the present chairman. Mr. Stowell was one of the founders of the St. Andrews public library, and was president for a number of years. He is chairman of the St. Andrews Domain Board, and was instrumental in procuring the property. Mr. Stowell was also for six years a member of the Pareora Licensing Committee. He is president of the St. Andrews Recreation Club, vice-president of the St. Andrews Debating Society, chairman of the Pareora water-race committee, Chief Ranger (for the second time) of the South Canterbury District Ancient Order of Foresters, of which he has been a member since 1868, and is a member of the Masonic Lodge St. John, E.C. In 1874, Mr. Stowell married Miss Elizabeth Sarah Day, of Somersetshire, England, and has had a family of seven sons and four daughters.12'

He was possibly the Mr D Stowell referred to in a newspaper transcribed as follows:

'Otago Witness, 20 May 1908, Page 6

'The annual meeting of the St Andrews (South Canterbury) Saleyards Company was held on the 8th inst. Mr D. Stowell, chairman of directors, presided. Messrs Galletly and Besley were re-elected directors and Mr George Lyall was elected director in the place of Mr D. Stowell, who has resigned. General regret was expressed at Mr Stowell's resignation, as, for many years he has acted as chairman of directors and much of the success of the company has been due to his management'.13

He married Elizabeth Hannah Mitchell on 12 August 1913 at Oamaru, Otago, New Zealand.14,15 David Stowell was presented with a Silver Presentation Dish on his retirement from Ch-Ch Valuation Department and a photograph of this appears on The Stowell Family Tree along with his portrait and several others on 31 December 1914.16 He lived on 26 June 1916 at 15 Dee Street, Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand; when his Son David gave his name and address as his next-of-kin for his Second World War service as a Gunner in the Army.17 He was listed as 'of Brompton and St Andrew's' in the Awards, Agreements, Orders, and Decisions Made Under the Industrial Relations Act, the Apprentices Act, and Other Industrial Legislation in 1919.18 He was listed in Who's Who in New Zealand published in 1932 and part of the entry reads: 'Stowell, David, JP, farmer St Andrew's C. B. Essex 1849; m. seven s. four d. Brought up on farms in Essex and Herts; at 16 went to foundary; wholesale fruit trade London...'.19

He died on 11 September 1937 at Sophia South, Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand, at age 87.20,21 He was buried on 14 September 1937 at Timaru Cemetery, Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand.22 His estate was probated in 1937; and he was described as Retired Government Valuer of 'Timaru.23' He was the subject of a book complied by Myrtle Thompson, his granddaughter, David Stowell, "Brompton", St. Andrews, South Canterbury, 1849-1937 : an early South Canterbury settler published in 1973 in Christchurch, New Zealand.24,25
