     Robert Eric Emerson Humble was born on 9 April 1896 at Yorkshire, England; and his birth was recorded at Huddersfield Registration district in the June quarter 1896.2,3,5 He was baptized on 18 May 1896 at St Stephen, Lindley, Yorkshire, England; and he was the son of Robert Alfred Humble, Clerk in Holy Orders, and Louisa Mary Humble. The ceremony was performed by Emerson Humble.5 He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England, as Son, age 4, birthplace Huddersfield, Yorkshire and his parents were Robert Alfred (Church of England Clergyman) and Louisa Mary Humble.6 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at Marine Villa, St Bees, Cumberland, England, as Boarder, age 14, birthplace Huddersfield, Yorkshire and he was at school. The schoolmaster, 11 other boarders and a housekeeper completed the house's census form.7 He served in the Great War [WWI] and The National Archives contain his Medal Card which records his regimental number as Private 5099 in the Royal Fusiliers and Temporary Second Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force; it records he applied for his medals in 1920.8

He married Dorothy Drielsma, daughter of George Isaac Drielsma and Maria Morris, in 1927 at Liverpool Register Office/Registrar Attended, Liverpool, Lancashire, England; and their marriage was recorded in the December quarter 1927 at Liverpool Registration district.1,2 The following entry appeared in The London Gazette Issue 33572 published on the 21 January 1930:

'The Companies Acts (Isle of Man), 1910 to 1926. In the Matter of ANGLO-SCOTTISH TRADING COMPANY Limited. AT an Extraordinary General Meeting of the above named Company, duly convened, and held at the offices of MacFarlane, Humble and Company, 37, Moorfields, Liverpool, on the second day of January, 1930, the subjoined Extraordinary Resolutions were duly passed: — 1. " That the Company cannot, by reason, of its liabilities, continue its business, and that it is advisable to voluntarily wind up the same, and that the Company be wound up accordingly." 2. "It was resolved that Mr. Robert Eric Emerson Humble, Incorporated Accountant, of ' Doric,' Briscoe Drive, Moreton, Cheshire, be Appointed Liquidator." Dated this second day of January, 1930. I. M. Hughes, Chairman.9'

The following item appeared in The London Gazette Issue 33569 published on the 10 January 1930:

"NOTICE is hereby given that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between us, the undersigned, George Edward Macfarlane and Robert Eric Emerson Humble, carrying on business as Accountants and Auditors, at 37, Moorfields, Liverpool, under the style or firm of MACFARLANE, HUMBLE & CO., has been dissolved by mutual consent as from the seventh day of January, 1930. All debts due and owing to or by the said late firm will be received or paid by the said George Edward Macfarlane, and such business will be carried on in the future by the said George Edward Macfarlane. As witness our hands this 7th day of January, 1930. GEO. E. MACFARLANE. R. E. E. HUMBLE. (025).4'

     Leslie Stanley Pullen was born on 9 June 1918 at London, England; and his birth was recorded at Wandsworth record office in the June quarter 1918.1 He was the son of Charles Henry Pullen and Jessie Pooley.1 Leslie Stanley Pullen married Lilian Gay Ellis on 27 June 1942 at Surrey, England; and their marriage was recorded at Surrey N E record ofifce in the June quarter 1942.3,4 Leslie Stanley Pullen died on 11 March 1984 at London, England, at age 65; and his death was recorded at Wandsworth registration office in the September quarter 1919.4,5

Captain Gordon Levason Curlewis
(1885-1915)
     Gordon Levason Curlewis was born on 16 March 1885 at Bell, Victoria, Australia.3,4,5 He was the son of George Campbell Curlewis and Lilla May George.1 Gordon Levason Curlewis was educated at Public School and he was a British Subject.6 He was an elector and appeared on the Australian Electoral Roll with his parents as a clerk in 1910 at 58 Ord Street, Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia.7 He married Margaret Rose Johnston on 22 October 1913 at Bunbury, Western Australia, Australia; and their marriage was recorded at Wellington Registration district.8,9,10 Gordon Levason Curlewis was a Business Salesman of Black Boy Hill Camp, Western Australia before 9 May 1915.4 He died on 9 May 1915 at age 30 and he was one of The Curlewis brothers – members of the 12th and 16th Battalions AIF at Anzac, Gallipoli during the Great War:

'Making the ultimate sacrifice…
'In 1914, four sons of George and Lilla Curlewis of Cottesloe Beach, Western Australia, went to war. Corporal George Curlewis, Lance Corporal Selwyn Curlewis and Captain Gordon Curlewis and all joined the 16th Battalion in October of that year. The fourth brother, Corporal Arthur Curlewis, joined the 12th Battalion. All four brothers landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915.

'Selwyn Curlewis was killed at Quinn’s Post on the night of 2 May. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial. Captain Gordon Curlewis was killed, also at Quinn’s Post, on 9 May and was buried at Beach Cemetery. In August, Arthur Curlewis was wounded at Lone Pine and evacuated to Egypt, where he died on 15 August 1915. He was buried in the Chatby Cemetery, Alexandria, Egypt. George Curlewis returned to Australia in November 1915.

'The four brothers are commemorated on the honour board at the Brookton Lesser Hall, Brookton, Western Australia. Trees were also planted to the memory of the three brothers who died, in King’s Park, Perth.'

'Name: CURLEWIS, GORDON LEVASON Initials: G L Nationality: Australian Rank: Captain Regiment/Service: Australian Infantry, A.I.F. Unit Text: 16th Bn. Date of Death: 09/05/1915 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: I. B. 20. Cemetery: Beach Cemetery, Anzac.

'The eight month campaign in Gallipoli was fought by Commonwealth and French forces in an attempt to force Turkey out of the war, to relieve the deadlock of the Western Front in France and Belgium, and to open a supply route to Russia through the Dardanelles and the Black Sea. The Allies landed on the peninsula on 25-26 April 1915; the 29th Division at Cape Helles in the south and the Australian and New Zealand Corps north of Gaba Tepe on the west coast, an area soon known as Anzac. Beach Cemetery was used from the day of the landing at Anzac, almost until the evacuation. There are 391 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War buried or commemorated in the cemetery. Special memorials commemorate 11 casualties believed to be buried among them. 22 of the burials are unidentified.1,11,12,6,13,9,14,15,16'

He was the subject of an obituary in The Argos (Melbourne, Victoria) as follows: 'CURLEWIS.-On the 25th May (from wounds received at the Dardanelles), Lieut. G. L. Curlewis, 16th. Batt., the beloved husband of Margaret Curlewis, and eldest son of G. C. Curlewis, of East Brookton, W. A. (formerly of Queenscliff, Victoria), aged 30 years.' on 2 June 1915.17 His estate was probated; and the 1916 Probate files are now in the State Records Office of Western Australia.18

He was commemorated in De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour, see the second camera icon above for his entry which includes biographical information.9 He was commemorated at Bunbury War Memorial, Bunbury, Western Australia, Australia.19 He was commemorated and his 'name is located at panel 79 in the Commemorative Area' at Australian War Memorial, Treloar Crescent (top of Anzac Parade), Campbell, Australian Capital Territory, Australia.20,21 He was commemorated at Queenscliff / Point Lonsdale Cemetery, Point Lonsdale, Victoria, Australia.22
