Louisa Collins1

New Zealand
Her married name was Stowell.1 Louisa Collins was born on 19 March 1862 at England.1 According to Myrtle Thompson's book and Sir Henry Brett's writings she 'came to NZ with her parents, Thomas and Mary Collins, who were passengers in the 570 ton barge Punjaub arriving in Lyttelton on 20 September 1873' having left London on 3rd June 1873. ' The ship was immediately put into quarantine on Ripa Island owing to Typhus, measles and other complaints that were prevalent among the passengers. There were 28 deaths on the journey out and 8 more while the ship was in quarantine. Of the 28 deaths, 21 were Danish and 7 English.' The total of 36 'was a very high figure, even for those days, when ships were so crowded and sanitation was not well understood. The Punjaub had a fine weather passage as far as Cape Leeuwin, up to which point she made quite good time, but within 300 miles of New Zealand she struck a severe gale, which delayed her. It was the same gale which blew the steamer Claud Hamilton and other vessels off the New Zealand coast and did considerable damage.' 'The master of the Punjaub was Captain Renaut and there were 340 immigrants abroad.'

'The following details are recorded concerning the Collins family: Thomas Collins aged 45, carpenter from Devon. Mary Collins aged 37. Louisa Collins aged 13. Mary A Collins aged 9. Elizabeth Collins aged 7. I have found on several occasions that dates do not correspond with documents, so too much emphasis should not be placed on them. On reading through an old paper, I find that while the barge Punjaub was at Ripa Island, Elizabeth Collins condition was given as very poor, in fact at one stage it was given as very doubtful, while Louisa’s was given as poor but hopeful.

'I have also discovered that the Return of Freeholders, October 1882 mentions a Thomas Collins, labourer of Waimate, owned land to the value of fifty pounds, so possibly it could be the same man.2,3,4'

She married Henry Stowell, son of Jeremiah Stowell and Rebecca Philbrook, in 1879 at St Andrews, South Canterbury, New Zealand.1 Louisa Collins was referred to in The Timaru Herald of 25 June 1917 regarding the death of her son: 'Quite a gloom was cast over Pareora when the news came through that Private A P Stowell had died of wounds received in action. Private Stowell who was the youngest son of Mrs H Stowell, Pareora, was a most popular boy and highly esteemed by all who knew him. His mother has received messages of sympathy from all parts of the Dominion. Private Stowell left with the 8th Reinforcements, went through the Somme push last year, and it is surmised that he fell in the last great fight when the New Zealanders made such a glorious name for themselves and so many brave men made the supreme sacrifice. Private Stowell was 22 years of age'.5

She died on 2 June 1935 at Pareora, Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand, at age 73; and she was given as a widow.1,6,7 She was buried on 4 June 1935 at Timaru Cemetery, Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand; as Louisa Stowell and there is a photograph of her memorial in the General Section on the Timaru District Council website in the form of an open book also commenorating her son Arthur Percy Stowell.8 Her estate was probated in 1935; and she was described as of 'Pareora - widow.9'
