Corporal Arthur Grenville Curlewis

     Arthur Grenville Curlewis was born on 14 September 1892 at Queenscliff, Victoria, Australia.1,3,4 He was the son of George Campbell Curlewis and Lilla May George.1 Arthur Grenville Curlewis was educated at Fremantle Boys School, Western Australia, Australia.4 He was a Farmer when he 'enlisted in Helena Vale, Western Australia on 17th September, 1914 and embarked with the 12th Infantry Battalion, H Company from Fremantle, WA on board the Transport ship Medic on 2nd November, 1914.

'Arthur was wounded on 7th August, 1915 with gun shot wounds to his back, chest & face & was hospitalised.4' He died on 15 August 1915 at age 22; and he was one of The Curlewis brothers – members of the 12th and 16th Battalions AIF at Anzac, Gallipoli during the Great War

'Making the ultimate sacrifice…
'In 1914, four sons of George and Lilla Curlewis of Cottesloe Beach, Western Australia, went to war. Corporal George Curlewis, Lance Corporal Selwyn Curlewis and Captain Gordon Curlewis and all joined the 16th Battalion in October of that year. The fourth brother, Corporal Arthur Curlewis, joined the 12th Battalion. All four brothers landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915.

'Selwyn Curlewis was killed at Quinn’s Post on the night of 2 May. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial. Captain Gordon Curlewis was killed, also at Quinn’s Post, on 9 May and was buried at Beach Cemetery. In August, Arthur Curlewis was wounded at Lone Pine and evacuated to Egypt, where he died on 15 August 1915. He was buried in the Chatby Cemetery, Alexandria, Egypt. George Curlewis returned to Australia in November 1915.

'The four brothers are commemorated on the honour board at the Brookton Lesser Hall, Brookton, Western Australia. Trees were also planted to the memory of the three brothers who died, in King’s Park, Perth.'

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission provide the following information:

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Q. 524. Cemetery: Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery'

'Chatby Military and War Memorial Cemetery (originally the Garrison cemetery) was used for burials until April 1916, when a new cemetery was opened at Hadra....The Chatby Memorial stands at the eastern end of the cemetery and commemorates almost 1,000 Commonwealth servicemen who died during the First World War and have no other grave but the sea. Many of them were lost when hospital ships or transports were sunk in the Mediterranean, sailing to or from Alexandria. Others died of wounds or sickness while aboard such vessels and were buried at sea'.1,5,6,7

He was the subject of an obituary in The Argos (Melbourne, Victoria) as follows: 'CURLEWIS. - About the 8th August, killed in action, at the Dardanelles, Corporal A.G. Curlewis, beloved youngest son of G. C. and L. M. Curlewis, of Brookton, W.A., aged 22 years.' on 6 September 1915.8,9 He was commemorated and his 'name is located at panel 65 in the Commemorative Area' at Australian War Memorial, Treloar Crescent (top of Anzac Parade), Campbell, Australian Capital Territory, Australia.10,11,12 He was commemorated at Queenscliff / Point Lonsdale Cemetery, Point Lonsdale, Victoria, Australia.13

     James Kates was born circa 1760.2 He married Susanna (?) circa 1785.3 James Kates left a will on 13 November 1818; This is the last Will and Testament of me James Kates of the Parish of Bisley in the County of Surry Farmer as follows that is to say in the first place I direct that all debts as I shall justly owe at the time of my decease together with my funeral and testamentary charges and expenses be paid and discharged by my Executors hereinafter named I give and bequeath unto my Wife Susanna and her annuity or yearly sum of forty pounds for and during the term of her natural life by four equal quarterly payments on or at the days or times hereinafter mentioned that is to say the twenty fifth day of March the twenty fourth day of June the twenty ninth day of September and the twenty fifth day of December in every year free from all deductions or abatements whatsoever the first quarterly payment of the said yearly rent or annual sum to be made on such of the said days or times as shall happen next after my decease if my said Wife shall be then living and in case the said annuity or yearly sum of forty pounds or any part thereof shall be in arrear and unpaid for the space of twenty one days
next after any of the days or times whenever the same is hereinbefore made payable then and as often as the case shall happen it shall be lawful for my said Wife and her assigns into or upon all and singular my Messuages lands and hereditaments wheresoever situate and hereinafter devised or into or upon any part or parts thereof in the name of the whole or otherwise to enter and there to distrain for the said annuity or yearly sum or so much thereof as shall be then in arrear and the distress and distresses then and there found and to take to detain and keep until the said annuity or yearly sum of forty pounds and all arrears thereof and all charges and expenses relating to or attending the said distress and distresses shall be fully satisfied and paid and in default thereof in due time after such distress and distresses shall be so taken to appraise sell and dispose of the same distress and distresses or otherwise to deal therewith according to law in like manner as in the cases of distresses for real reserved by Lease or Common demise for the purpose of paying and satisfying the same and I hereby declare that the said annuity or yearly sum of forty pounds so hereinbefore given to my said Wife shall be by her taken in lieu and satisfaction of all Dower and thirds at Common Law or by Custom or otherwise which she might otherwise have or claim into or out of all or any of my freehold or Copyhold hereditaments whatsoever of or to which I now am or may be seized or entitled to any estate of to which dower or free bench is incident I give and bequeath unto my Son in law William Hone his executors administrators and assigns the sum of six hundred pounds for his absolute use and benefit I give and bequeath unto my son William Kates his executors administrators and assigns the sum of four hundred pounds for his absolute use and benefit and which legacies I direct shall be payable at the end of six calendar months after the decease of my said Wife and not sooner I give and bequeath the annual sum of fifteen pounds to be paid and payable half yearly out of my Real and Personal Estate for the purpose of bringing up my Grandson William Daborn until he shall attain the age of twenty one years and also a sum not to exceed fifty pounds for the purpose of putting out the said William Daborn as an apprentice to such Trade or Business which said yearly sum of fifteen pounds and sum not to exceed fifty pounds shall be laid out by my Executors for his benefit at their absolute discretion and when and so soon as he shall attain the age of twenty one years I give and bequeath unto the said William Daborn the sum of one hundred pounds for his absolute use and benefit which said annuity or yearly sums and legacies I hereby charge upon all and singular my Real and Personal Estate whatsoever and subject thereto I give devise and bequeath all and singular my Real and Personal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever and of what nature or kind soever and whereof I have power to dispose by Will unto my eldest Son James Kates his heirs executors administrators and assigns for ever according to the nature of the said Estates respectively and lastly I hereby nominate constitute and appoint my said Son the said James Kates and my son in law the said William Hone Executors of this my Will hereby revoking all former and other Will and Wills by me at any time heretofore made and do declare this only to be my last Will and Testament In witness whereof I have to each sheet of this my Will contained in two sheets of paper subscribed my
name and to this last sheet my seal also this thirtieth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen.
