     Alfred Hillatt Brooks was born on 4 June 1818 at England.1 He was the son of Walter Brooks and Elizabeth (?).1,2 Alfred Hillatt Brooks was christened on 4 December 1818 at St Mary, Rotherhithe, London, England.1 He married Blanche Rosa Coleman on 3 May 1845 at Calcutta, Bengal, India.3 Alfred Hillatt Brooks and Blanche Rosa Coleman had a daughter Blanche Eliza Louisa Brooks born on 14 November 1847, in Calcutta, Bengal, India she married Fortescue Willoughby Porter (1846-1927) and died in 1930.3,4,5 Alfred Hillatt Brooks and Blanche Rosa Coleman had a son named Alfred Walter Moir Brooks born on 26 October 1848 and Baptised in Bengal, Calcutta, India, on 22 April 1849.6 Alfred Hillatt Brooks and Blanche Rosa Coleman had a daughter named Maria Ellen Brooks born on 4 April 1851 and Baptised in Agra, Bengal, India, on 10 April 1851.6 Alfred Hillatt Brooks was appeared in The London Gazette published on the 26 December 1851' in the following item:

Brooks and Company. Date of Gazette containing notice, February 21, 1852.8'

Brooks, Alfred Hillatt . 1853.9' He was was listed in The London Gazette published on the 29 March 1867' in the following notice from The India Office, March 28, 1867:

     'In the Matter of Alfred Hillatt Brooks, residing at the Calcutta Club, No. 9, Chowringhee-road, in Calcutta, carrying on business in Calcutta as a Ship and Freight Broker, an Insolvent. Notice, that the Petition of the said Insolvent, seeking the benefit of the Act 11 Vic., cap. 21, was filed in the office of the Chief Clerk on Wednesday, the 13th day of February instant, and by an Order of the same date the estate and effects of the said Insolvent were vested in the Official Assignee.—T. Owen, Attorney. Date of Gazette containing notice, February 20, 1867.10'

He was was the subject of an item which appeared in The London Gazette published on the 5 July 1867' from the 'India Office, July 2, 1867':

     'In the Matter of Alfred Hillatt Brooks, an Insolvent. On Saturday, the 4th day of May instant, it was ordered that the petition of the said Insolvent seeking for relief under the Act 11 Vic., cap. 2 I, be dismissed; but this order is not to affect or annul any act or thing heretofore done by the Official Assignee : and it was also ordered that the said Assignee do deliver over to the said Insolvent all the estate and effects, monies, goods, books, and papers now remaining in the hands of the said Assignee, belonging to the estate of the said Insolvent, after deducting therefrom his commission and all lawful charges incurred by him. —Owen, Attorney. Date of Gazette containing notice, May 15, 1867.11'

He made a Will in 1868 and deposited it at The Oriental Bank Corporation in London. He was described as being 'of Calcutta, India'. It is now in The National Archives under 'Records Supreme Court of Judicature (Re Companies Act 1862-1867)' deposited by the Liquidator on 24 February 1897 as 'remaining unclaimed.12'

He died on 14 April 1879 at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, at age 60; and his death was registered in the June quarter 1879 at Cheltenham Registration district, at age 60.13,4,14

He was the subject of an obituary in the London Evening Standard as 'late of Calcutta, aged 60' on 23 April 1879.14 His estate was probated; and The 1879 National Probate Calendar reads 'The Will and two Codicils of Alfred Hillatt Brooks late of 7 Imperial-square Cheltenham in the County of Gloucester gentleman who died 14 April 1879 at 7 Imperial-square was proved at the Principal Registry by Walter George Brooks of 13 Chantrey-road Stockwell-road in the County of Surrey Gentleman the Brother and Fortescue Willoughby Porter of 4 Imperial-square in the Bengal Civil Service the Executors.4' He left a will on 28 November 1893; A footnote concerning his Will appeared in The London Gazette Issue 26462 published on the 28 November 1893:

     'In the High Court of Justice.—Chancery Division. In the Matter of the Companies Acts, 1862 and 1867, and in the Matter of the Oriental Bank Corporation. WHEREAS there are now deposited in, London and certain branches of the abovenamed Corporation, various securities and other documents which have not been applied for by the persons in whose names they were so deposited. Notice is hereby given, that unless, application is received and a satisfactory title to them made out, the Liquidator will, after the expiration of six months, proceed to apply to the High Court of Justice, for an Order to deposit such securities, &c., in Court, or as the Court may direct. The securities so deposited in London, are standing in the names of ... Alfred Hillatt Brooks... Applications in respect of the securities deposited in the above names should be made at the office of the Official Liquidator of the Corporation, 19, Old Broad-street, in the city of London, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between the hours of 10 A.M. and 4 P.M., or by letter addressed to the said Official Liquidator.— Dated 22nd November, 1893. FRESHFIELDS and WILLIAMS, 5 Bank-buildings, London, Solicitors for the Official Liquidator.15'
