Ewart Humphrey Myer was the inventor of registered patent GB954107 date 25 Feb 1963 for Improvements relating to Matresses:
'Abstract of GB954107 954,107. Mattresses. HORATIO MYER & CO. Ltd. Feb. 25, 1963 [Feb. 26, 1962], No. 7384/62. Heading A4M. An interior sprung mattress has applied over the top and bottom of the spring interior a sheet of hessian carrying a layer of coir fibre over which is a layer of cotton felt and over the felt a layer of polyetherbased urethane foam, a ticking cover being applied over the layers and having a flystrip stitched thereto and secured by hog rings to intermediate points on the springs to tension the cover.11'
He was interviewed as part of the following article in Design 1965 Journal by Dorothy Meade entitled 'Sleeping easy': '...The most go-ahead section of the bed world is the booming bunk business. New ideas abound. Most bunks split into single beds, and designs are simple, safe and practical: ladders for the top bunk, lockers below. Frasers makes a spare bed to stow beneath bunks. Myer's, which made its First bunk bed for the Festival of Britain, now makes 400 a week. But none of the bunk people has tackled the problem of bedclothes. I asked Ewart Myer why he didn't sell sleeping bags to match his bunk mattresses. He told me, "If customers seem relaxed people, as I am myself, I always recommend sleeping bags." (His own sons always use them.) But he can feel more conventional customers bristling at the idea, and he doesn't think this a commercial proposition...Sleeping bags are accepted here for camping and boating, but rarely for regular home use. Yet for bunk beds, at least, they seem the obvious answer. Myer's new Gemini bunks, to, have a much lower top bunk, for easier making up. But it seems even these can have their problems: a well upholstered customer, watching Mr Myer demonstrate just how easily the top bunk could be made, remarked, "It's all very well for you, Mr Myer. You don't have a bosom."... I asked Mr Myer, whose firm makes drawers to fit under any of their beds, how well they sold. "Retailers don't like them. They won't show them fixed to a bed because they have to be unscrewed if customers don't want them. So they get left on a shelf - and don't sell."...' Caption 10 reads 'Myer's Gemini bunk beds can be converted into two separate beds. Enclosed ends, and a full length rail on top bunk add to safety.12'
He lived between 1974 and 1979 at 7a Health Drive, Hampstead, London, England.13 He wrote Myer's First Century 1876-1976 The Story of Myer's Comfortable Beds in 1976.14
He died on 23 June 2000 at London, England, at age 86; and his death was registered in June 2000 at Camden Registration district.2,6,15 He was commemorated in a letter to The Times headed Ancient Wisdom published on 15 April 2002 from Mr John Holmwood as follows:
'Sir, Lucy Pinney's reflections on the difficulties of speaking to groups of retired people in remote village halls (Weekend, April 6) reminds me of my friend, the late Ewart Myer. An amusing and entertaining speaker on a wide variety of subjects, he was in great demand from such groups.
'On one occasion he was just getting into his stride when a stage whisper, loud enough to overcome the hearing difficulties of its intended recipient, declared: "This could go on for hours." It didn't.16'
