Benjamin Moses Van Praagh was born in 1781 at Groningen, Netherlands; and his parents were Moses Leemerts Van Praagh born 1744 and Mindele Benjamin Van Emden born 1746.

An excerpt from an article by the Jewish Historical Museum on Groingen provides some background information on his birthplace:

'An organized Jewish community finally came into being in Groningen during the 1740’s following the approval of its statutes by the city council. The Groningen community built a new synagogue in the Volteringstraat, the later Kleine Folkingestraat, in 1756. At the time, the majority of the Jews of Groningen lived in closed proximity to the new synagogue. The Volteringstraat synagogue was opened despite opposition from Christian citizens. Local enmity toward Jews was so strong that the synagogue had been constructed without windows so that Jews could worship in anonymity. From 1776 until 1808, Groningen’s mayor and city council went so far as to closely watch over the internal affairs of the Jewish community'

The Jewish population of Groningen and surroundings in 1798 was 396 and by 1809 it was 516.1,2,3,4

He married Bartje Joseph Speyer on 21 May 1802.1,3 Benjamin Moses Van Praagh and Bartje Joseph Speyer had the following children born in Holland: Lemmel (b 1803), Joseph (b 1804), Marianne (b 1807), Moses (Morris) (b 1809), Saloman (b 1811) and Lewis (b 1818) in 1803.1,3 Benjamin Moses Van Praagh emigrated in 1816; He arrived in London in 1816.1 He died on 21 October 1824 at Church Lane, Whitechapel, London, England.1,5,3 He was buried on 22 October 1824 at Lauriston Road Jewish Cemetery, Hackney, London, England; and his monumental inscription reads: 'Mr Benj.
