A copy of the Memorial Register is kept at the Civic Offices in Guildhall Square and may be consulted there. http://www.memorials.inportsmouth.co.uk/southsea/naval.htm Historical Information: After the First World War, an appropriate way had to be found of commemorating those members of the Royal Navy who had no known grave, the majority of deaths having occurred at sea where no permanent memorial could be provided. An Admiralty committee recommended that the three manning ports in Great Britain - Chatham, Plymouth and Portsmouth - should each have an identical memorial of unmistakable naval form, an obelisk, which would serve as a leading mark for shipping. The memorials were designed by Sir Robert Lorimer, who had already carried out a considerable amount of work for the Commission, with sculpture by Henry Poole. After the Second World War it was decided that the naval memorials should be extended to provide space for commemorating the naval dead without graves of that war, but since the three sites were dissimilar, a different architectural treatment was required for each. The architect for the Second World War extension at Portsmouth was Sir Edward Maufe (who also designed the Air Forces memorial at Runnymede) and the additional sculpture was by Charles Wheeler, William McMillan, and Esmond Burton. Portsmouth Naval Memorial commemorates around 10,000 sailors of the First World War and almost 15,000 of the Second World War. No. of Identified Casualties: 24586.4

Phineas Selig
(1856-1941)
"Dictionary of New Zealand Biography"
Phineas Selig was born on 5 September 1856 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; and he was '...the seventh child of Benjamin Aaron Selig, a watchmaker and jeweller, and his wife, Catherine Jacobs'. Their other children included Dinah and Jacob.1,2 He emigrated in 1862; and 'he arrived in Wellington, New Zealand, where his father was employed as officiating minister by the Wellington Jewish congregation.1' He was a 'Journalist, newspaper editor and manager, sports administrator'. The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography contains a photograph of him together with his full history. Harvey concludes 'Phineas Selig's vigour and administrative ability were the keys to his success in several fields. He left an enduring legacy, particularly in the secure base of the 'Press', the activities of the Newspaper Proprietors' Association, and strengthened national trotting and athletics organisations.1,3,4' He was mentioned in the following item in the North Otago Times of 29 March 1883: Christchurch: 'Phineas Selig, one of the proprietors of Society, applied in the R.M. Court today to have S. Genese ; business manager of the Jennie Lee troupe, bound over to keep the peace, on account of his having, on March 16, challenged Selig to fight, and used provoking and insulting language to him. The affair took place in the billiard room of the Commercial Hotel, and arose out of Genese having stopped Society's free passes, because of a criticism on "Grasshopper". The Magistrate, Mr Richmond Beotham, did not consider the affair serious, and declined to bind defendant over.5'

He married Kate Mendelsohn, daughter of Louis Mendelsohn and Leah Jones Levason, on 24 August 1892 at Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand; and the following announcement was published in the Otago Witness of 1 September 1892 ': 'Selig— Mendelsohn.— On the 24th August, at the Synagogue, by the Rev. A. Chodowski, of Christchurch, Phineas, third son of the late Rev. B. A. Selig, to Kate (Tiny), eldest daughter of Louis Mendelsohn, Esq., J.P., of this city'. They are believed to have had two daughters.1,6,7

Phineas Selig was the subject of a biographical account in The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Canterbury Provincial Direct] published in 1903:

'Mr. Phineas Selig, Manager of the Christchurch Press Company, Limited, was born in Melbourne in 1856, and arrived in Wellington at the age of seven years with his parents. After completing his education under the tutorship of Mr. Finnmore, Mr. Mowbray, and Mr Brann (whose schools were the most prominent of the time) Mr. Selig entered the Civil Service as reader in the Government Printing Office, where he remained for some time. In 1871 he joined the staff of the “Lyttelton Times” as reader, but some years later was compelled to resign his position owing to ill-health. He went to Sydney, where he remained for about three years, during which he acted as correspondent for the “Times.” On returning to the colony, Mr. Selig started the “Referee” in copartnership with Mr. A. E. Bird, formerly of the “Canterbury Times” and Melbourne “Sportsman.” The new journal was appointed the Official Calendar for all New Zealand jockey clubs. It was sold to the Christchurch Press Company in 1891, when the “Weekly Press” and “Referee” were amalgamated, and Mr. Selig became editor of the “Referee” portion, which position he occupied until he accepted his present appointment. Mr. Selig has been well known for many years in sporting, dramatic, and athletic circles. He has been president of the New Zealand Trotting Association (the governing body for the sport in New Zealand) since its inception, and president of the Trotting Conference, which holds its sittings annually in Wellington to amend old and make new laws for the betterment of the sport. Mr. Selig is one of the oldest councillors of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, the controlling body for amateur athletics in the colony. He has visited Australia as manager of representative teams competing at the Australasian Championships, and as special correspondent in connection therewith. Mr. Selig is the founder of the Public Schools Amateur Athletic Association of North Canterbury, under the auspices of which the school children make an annual display, which is one of the biggest functions of the year. Mr. Selig, who is a son of the late Rev. B. A. Selig, was married in 1892 to a daughter of Mr. Louis Mendelsohn, one of Dunedin's most respected citizens, and has two daughters.8'

He was commented on in the following item in the New Zealand Free Lance:

'Last week the New Zealand Trotting Association held its annual Conference in Wellington. The Conference was presided over by Mr. P. Selig, its president, an enthusiastic supporter of the trotting sport, one of the best-informed men in the colony, and one of the successful newspaper men of Canterbury. Mr. Selig's sphere of activity is in the business department of the newspaper and not in that of journalism. But, it was only quite recently that he took over the business end of newspaper concerns. He came into prominence over a decade ago, as part proprietor of the "Referee" a weekly paper devoted to every phase of sport. The Christchurch "Press" Company purchased the "Referee," and also acquired the services of Mr. Selig, who remained in the editorial chair of the "Referee" portion of the "Weekly Press" until something like two years ago. On Mr. Hiorns resigning the managership of the "Press," to take over the "New Zealand Times" management, Mr. Selig was promoted from a journalistic to a managerial desk. The general manager of the "Press" Company was reelected president of the Trotting Association. Here's to you, Phineas.' on 25 July 1903.9 He was listed in A Standard for the People, which is a book edited by Stephen Levine to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Hebrew Congragation.10 He was recorded in the Mercury (Tobart, Tasmania) as Managing Director of the New Zealand Weekly Press and 'of New Zealand's premier sporting paper the Referee' visiting Sydney on a holiday from Christchurch on 26 June 1916.11 The History of the NPA contains the following item: '1917 President of the NPA, Phineas Selig, had to ask the Government for special ships to bring paper to New Zealand due to a shortage of newsprint.12' He was recorded as retiring on 10 January 1923 from the Christchuch (NZ) Press Company in The Argos (Melbourne, Victoria) after 33 years service with the company.13

He died on 7 November 1941 at Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand, at age 85.1 He was buried on 9 November 1941 at Linwood Cemetery, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand.14,15 His estate was probated on 20 November 1941 at Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand; and he left a Will.16
