     George Walter Fry was born in 1898 at Newport, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England; and his birth was recorded at Newport Isle of Wight Registration district in the September quarter 1898.1,2,3 He was the son of George William John Fry and Lilian Mary Salter.1 George Walter Fry appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 14 Clarendon Street, Newport, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England, (Transcribed as George Ivy) as Son, age 2, birthplace Newport, Hampshire.3 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at 6 Albert Street, Newport, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England, as Son, age 12, birthplace Newport, and he was at school.4

He died on 14 November 1918; during the Great War [WWI] and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission provide the following information on G.W.Fry:

'Rank: Lance Corporal. Service No:330170. Date of Death:14/11/1918. Age:20. Regiment/Service: Hampshire Regiment 1st/6th Bn. Grave Reference: IV. C. 2. Cemetery:AMARA WAR CEMETERYAdditional Information: Son of Mr. Fry and Mrs. Lilian M. Fry, of 6, Albert St., Newport, Isle of Wight.5,6,7,8' He was buried at Amara War Cemetery, Iraq; and Location Information is provided by The Commonwalth War Graves Commission 'Amara is a town on the left bank of the Tigris some 520 kilometres from the sea. The War Cemetery is a little east of the town between the left bank of the river and the Chahaila Canal.' Plus Historical Information 'Amara was occupied by the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force on 3 June 1915 and it immediately became a hospital centre. The accommodation for medical units on both banks of the Tigris was greatly increased during 1916 and in April 1917, seven general hospitals and some smaller units were stationed there. Amara War Cemetery contains 4,621 burials of the First World War, more than 3,000 of which were brought into the cemetery after the Armistice. 925 of the graves are unidentified. In 1933, all of the headstones were removed from this cemetery when it was discovered that salts in the soil were causing them to deteriorate. Instead a screen wall was erected with the names of those buried in the cemetery engraved upon it. Plot XXV is a Collective Grave, the individual burial places within this are not known. There are also seven non-war graves in the cemetery.'

The National Archives contains his name on an Award Roll giving him as a Rifleman who was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.5,7 His estate was probated; and a Soldier's Will is listed with his Regimental number and date of death.9 He was commemorated on a marble plaque 'unveiled and dedicated 8th October 1922 by the Ven. L F Tugwell, LL.D. (archdeacon of the Isle of Wight). Executed by Mr F Cooper' at St John the Baptist, Newport, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England.10
