Thomas Blamire
1848-1894
Thomas Blamire was born before 4 June 1848 at Little Bampton Farm, Carlisle, Cumberland, England, and his birth was recorded at Wigton Registration district, in the June quarter 1848.1,4 He was baptized on 4 June 1848 at Kirkbampton, Carlisle, Cumberland, England.2,5,6,7 He was the son of William Blamire and Mary Liddle.2,3 Thomas Blamire appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at Little Bampton, Kirkbampton, Cumberland, England, as Son, age 2, birthplace Kirkbampton, Cumberland.3 He appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at 5 Green Market, St Mary Within, Cumberland, England, as Visitor of Joseph Lancaster, Linen and Woolen Draper, age 13, birthplace Kirkbampton, Cumberland, and he was a Scholar. His brother, William Blamire, age 15, was also a Visitor.5 He lived in 1866 at Carlisle, Cumberland, England.8 William Anderson and his wife are researching Thomas and visited Marin, near Virgo, Galicia, North-West Spain and wrote an account entitled Spanish Treasure Trove. An excerpt from this reads: 'According to the story in Spain Thomas had been an officer in the Navy and had had an instant conversion which had changed him from being a “follower of Satan” to being a “follower of Christ” He left the Navy and joined the Congregational Church in Carlisle. However he felt a calling to preach in Spain and as the Congregational Church did not send people to Spain he joined the Plymouth Brethren ( now the Christian Brethren) went to Spurgeon’s College in London for training and in 1873 was sent to Madrid then Barcelona, Corunna and finally in 1874 settled in Marin.

'Spain was wholly a Catholic country but in the 1860’s and early 1870’s there was considerable political upheaval and revolution and as a result an element of religious freedom was given by the Government. Into this turmoil came preachers such as Thomas, a friend Thomas Wigstone from Penrith and a converted Jewess Rosetta Levason, daughter of a dental surgeon and who was to marry Thomas. They travelled the country, walking great distances, preaching, distributing religious tracts and selling Bibles. The Catholic priests disliked them and incited their congregations in the villages and towns to treat the preachers as heretics and to drive Thomas and James away by stoning them and on one occasion at least the priest fired his shotgun at them and fortunately missed.

In Marin there was considerable ill-feeling between the Church and the fishermen as if a fisherman died at sea the priest was unwilling to bury the body as he had been unable to administer the last rites. Thomas told the fishermen he would bury their dead and so became a friend of the fisherman and from that beginning built up a strong Protestant congregation and which is still active today. Up to that time Galicia had had the reputation of being a very bigoted Catholic area and as it was remote from the rest of Spain it upheld deeply entrenched traditions. The upshot was that to attempt to convert the Galicians generally to Protestantism was an almost impossible task but one which Thomas with James Wigstone and Rosetta tackled with vigour and enthusiasm and considerable success.

'The result is that his name is still revered in Marin where he is still known as “a Great Man of God”.9

He married Rosetta Sarah Levason, daughter of Dr Lewis Levason and Kate Jones, on 26 November 1873 at Vice Consul's Office, Madrid, Spain.2,10,11, and Thomas Blamire was a 25 year old Bachelor and Missionary. Rosetta Sarah Levason was a 34 year old Spinster, who was also a Missionary. Their address was Calle de Servano - 10 3 o He was mentioned in the will of Lewis Levason written on 4 June 1875.12 Thomas Blamire died on 6 January 1894 and he was described as 'late of Marin, Spain.13' The following Obituary by J.P. Wigstone, his friend and colleague, appeared in The Christian dated 12th April, 1894 and contained a Portrait of the gentleman:

'The Late Mr Thomas Blamire
Pioneer Missionary in Spain

‘Many hearts were made sad by the departure, a few months ago, of this servant of God. In writing a short sketch of his life, as bearing on his Christian work I will begin with him in 1866 in Carlisle.

‘Thomas Blamire was then far from God, and deep in worldliness. But that year was also the beginning of grand things in Carlisle. Gordon Forlong brought great blessing to the town; Rev. Wm. Reid, the author of The Blood of Jesus, soon after came; Dr. W.P. Mackay, afterwards of Hull, was another instrument in the hands of God.

'Among many others Mr. Blamire was turned from Satan to Christ, and had the advantage of being in the full swing of this time of revival. His old companions were either converted or left him. He was introduced to Sunday school work, and was also encouraged to preach. One point of his preaching was its great earnestness.

‘He spent the two years 1870-72 in Mr Spurgeon’s College. I had been at the College three months before he came, and was there to welcome him. Towards the close of the College course we had daily prayer together, that God would lead us his own way. We asked for a wide field, where there would be plenty of room to work without interfering with other workers. The leading we got was towards Spain.

‘We arrived in Barcelona Jan. 24, 1878. People told us of civil war and of fighting that had just taken place in the streets. Shortly after this, news came that King Amadeo had abdicated the throne; a little later that the Republic had been proclaimed. The Carlists had risen against the Government. All Barcelona was stirred; and the streets were thronged. A large Bible coach belonging to a Scotch society was filled with books and tracts, and the coachman, a Spaniard, drove four of us down to the Rambla, the principal thoroughfare of Barcelona. We took the steps on the coach in turn. It was animating to hear Blamire with his fine powerful voice cry, “Toda la Biblia en 8 reales” (This whole Bible for 1s. 8d.) As the ability to speak Spanish came, reading and preaching followed, and Mr Blamire was always there.

‘As we felt we could not acquire the language properly in Barcelona, where the Catalan dialect is so much spoken, we went to the Capital in May. At that time there were many workers in Madrid, so Mr Blamire, Mr Carlyle (now of Rio Tinto), and myself determined to begin open air work in all the villages near the Capital, a thing unheard of, so fare as we knew, except in Madrid, where Mr. C.E. Faithfull often preached.

‘Said he, “Let us go where there is no preacher. Let us never interfere with the work of any other servant of Christ”. To this determination he adhered thenceforward. We heard that there was no work at all in North-West Spain; so, early in 1875, we visited several places, returning via Oporto to Madrid. There we waited on God daily for about sic weeks for guidance, till we were fully persuaded that we should begin work in Corunna.

‘While in Madrid, he found in 1873 the future partner of his life —Miss Rosetta Levason, already engaged in mission work. When we started for Corunna he had a wife and young child to take with him.

‘What a commotion the Gospel made in Corunna! The governor threatened to put us in gaol; many hundreds filled the square in front of the house and meeting place; week after week people flocked from all parts to hear. The priests and Archbishop of Santiago excommunicated us heartily. The newspapers wrote, some in a friendly way and others the reverse; but all served to make the meetings known. The Gospel was preaching, and the Scriptures were sold in thousands of portions. Best of all the Lord worked, souls were saved and a small church was formed at Corunna. Next were visited the villages and places near, and a work begun in Arteijo, which God blessed. These two meetings have been going on ever since, first under Mr Geo. Spooner (now in South America), and next Mr. Geo. Chesterman, who is still in charge.

‘Vigo was next fixed upon, in 1877. A meeting place was taken. The priests were up in arms; the alcalde (or mayor) called on the landlord; the priestly party got their chief political agents aroused as enemies; newspapers went to work, and there was a lively time even before the meetings began. But they did begin, and our Corunna experience was repeated; rather more than that. We were moving about selling Bibles, giving tracts, and speaking to the people, when the chief of police and two policemen came with a warrant for our apprehension.

‘We were taken and paraded through the town to this man and that man, and then taken to a village about two miles off by the chief of police. We had to make a declaration. We declared that the Bible was the best book in the world, that we desired that everybody in Spain would come to Jesus Christ and be saved by Him alone, and many other such things. That satisfied the magistrate of the place that we were in for it. We were let out on “word of honour” as bail. Our meetings in Vigo were in full swing, and just at their commencement.

‘On a Sunday morning at sunrise, the chief of police presented himself with another warrant. We were to appear before the Governor before sunset. That would shut up all the meetings for the day, and frighten the people; and was cleverly planned to destroy the work. The Governor’s office was more than twenty miles away, four hours by coach. The coach left at 11 a.m; and there was no return coach after 2 p.m. The British Vice-Consul telegraphed asking that we might be permitted to visit the Governor the next day. The return telegram came in time, and on the Monday the chief of police watched us into the coach. His Excellency said it was a serious case; he had sixty-five witnesses against us; there would be fourteen years’ imprisonment unless we promised to leave the province.

‘ “If your Excellency”, said Blamire, “can force us out of your province, do so; but we will never budge an inch of our own accord”.

‘His Excellency telegraphed to Madrid, and we, on bail, returned to Vigo. The Minister telegraphed from Madrid that the lawsuit could not go on; we were free, and praised God for the deliverance.

‘Morgadanes is a village about nine miles from Vigo. In 1878 some people came from it asking us to help them. By the influence of the priests and the authorities they had been prohibited from reading their Bibles together; they had been stoned, and at that time found it dangerous to go out of their doors. We went over, and gave notice to the magistrate that on a certain day we would begin meetings in a room we have rented for the purpose. We have our first meeting, which lasted about two hours, most peaceably. But on the way home a gun was fired from behind a hedge. As we went up the hill —very steep —stones were rolled down and thrown down upon us. At the top we found a mob, with stones bulging out of their pockets, stones in their arms, stones in their aprons, directed by three priests, one of them armed with a gun.

‘After a moment’s parley, we ran off towards the main road, about two miles over the mountain paths, which indeed we were not at all certain of knowing again. Another large group were also waylaying us at one of the turns in the road, and the others were following with the priests, crying, “We’ll have the skins of those English today.” But we committed ourselves to the Lord, turned our umbrellas, opened of course, to the showers of stones, and ran on. We got to the road, and Mr Blamire said, “Well, that God, we’re here. I thought we should never have seen it again.” A trap was waiting for us, and so we got home. The newspapers at Madrid were full of the matter; the Roman Catholic papers openly defended the priests, while others said a Government that allowed such things could not be too loudly reprobated. The Government sent armed police to the village, took the gun from the priest, while the alcalde and judge were ordered to see personally that we were protected on our visits, and that they should keep the door. From that time the people have been left to read the Bible in peace, and a small meeting has continued in the village ever since.

‘We thought Vigo had had a fair share of our time, and we consulted as to what place should be visited next. We felt, after having prayed much about it, that Pontevedra, the capital of the province, was the place. We got a house and a meeting place, and saw the Governor. This was the place to which we had been sent as prisoners. “Do you mean to say you are beginning with your heresies in the capital, and above all times on a Sunday?” “Yes, your Excellency, Sunday is the best day for preaching the Word of God; the people are most free that day.” He Excellency threatened; the archbishop, the late Primate of Spain, who was then Archbishop of Santiago, came to Pontevedra and cursed us and all who should le us houses or sell us bread. This was the same man who in Corunna cursed our landlord to the seventh generation. Nevertheless, the Gospel was proclaimed to hundreds of people who crowded to hear, and souls were saved.

‘In Pontevedra we had taken a house and locale for two years. We took another house and locale in Villagarcia. Mr Blamire continued to live in Pontevedra, and I lived in Villagarcia, but we arranged the meetings so that we could take part together. Here we were nearer the Archbishop, and the nearer you get to his palace, the more ignorant the people seem. “These people that pray to the Devil have come here,” said some. “A hundred years ago it was prophesied that Anti-Christ would come this year, and two of them are in Villagarcia,” said a neighbouring priest. “Please leave my home,” said our landlord. “I would not let them have it for five dollars a day,” said the landlady. “If they only believed in God!”, she exclaimed.

‘This kind of thing brought the people from all surrounding parts; and what a pleasure it was to see dear Blamire arriving, after a walk of fifteen miles, on the eve of the first meeting! Who could help preaching? As the grand announcement, “God so loved the world” was commented on, the people seemed surprised. At the end of the meeting they went away saying, “Now we know the priests are liars.” Souls were saved, and the Gospel was carried in all directions ! for each of those places became a focus of light, where light had not been before at least for centuries.

‘We agreed that Vigo needed help; so I lived there, and Mr Blamire went to live in Marin, where the work thenceforward must be considered Mr Blamire’s own special work for God. In it he had much help from Miss Lydia Brooks, now Mrs Wirtz, of Carrill; from Mr Millne, Miss Morgan, and Miss Wreford, not forgetting his wife, whose fearless spirit was a great help amid the persecutions attendant on the work.

[Blank space]

‘How that meeting-place in Calle del Puento was filled when first it opened! Stones rattling against the doors, the terrible din of old petroleum cans, whistling, shouting, and all the etceteras imaginable —these will give some idea of the difficulties of the work. But the Lord saved souls constantly in that little fishing town.

‘Mr Blamire got right in among the people. He had his study full of men, who came to talk over matters. His preaching was afterwards greatly enlivened by relating these conversations, and was thus understood by the people. He used even to write letters for those who could not write; they got to trust him and consult him and get his help in their private matters. The Lord turned everything to the furtherance of the Gospel there. I mention one thing out of many. The priests got up a grand to-do, and blessed the sea for the Roman Catholic fishermen, and cursed it for the Protestants. The next day the Roman Catholic men caught no fish, but the Protestants came home with their boats full. So, the people said all over the place; “If you want to get any fish you must be an Evangelical”. At Marin there is a lively congregation of Christians, with over 100 in fellowship, and as many more of those who have given their names in as adherents, and who regularly attend the meetings.

‘Santo Tomé is about three miles from Marin, and here Mr Blamire preached every Sunday afternoon. God blessed the work. But time would fail, and so would space, to tell how a woman offered her own house in which she lived to be pulled down that a preaching place might be built on the site; how a man gave another site, how it was built though Mr Blamire’s self-denial, in every way, and through the exertion of the people; how there was rejoicing at the opening. A cyclone came, and this meeting-place was blown down, killing two people and causing the enemy to rejoice. But Mr Blamire soon had it open again, and at the end of September, 1893, when last he and I preached together, it was full of people.

‘Shortly after this occasion Mr Blamire went over to Oporto, and worked hard for the Master he loved to serve. I heard he had been very ill; but was recovering. He had had so many attacks previously, we were not alarmed. Neither was his wife, who was then on a visit to England. A friend wrote to me: “He who thou lovest is sick . . . but my own opinion is he will get over it.” Before that card came, a telegram from the same friend said, “Blamire is with the Lord”. Subsequent letters told that he did not think his end was so near; he gave no last message for anyone, but quietly slept away, the watchers not able to say exactly when he breathed his last.

His work for Christ will go forward. He looked to God for every penny he needed for it all his time in Spain. It is God’s work; and the Lord will not allow it to suffer.

He was buried at Town Cemetery, Marin, Spain, William Anderson writes in Spanish Treasure Trove: 'We mentioned to the pastor that we had not found his grave and he took us back to the cemetery in his car and showed us the tombstone. It was so prominent we had not noticed it in our search of the small stones on the ground. It was about 4 feet 6 inches high in the shape of a casket and six feet long. It was inscribed on one side with his personal details and on the other with his last message to his congregation with words from the Communion Service on both ends. It also showed the maiden name of his wife and which had been missing from his death certificate. She had been in England at the time of his death and the witnesses did not know her maiden name'. Mr Anderson adds that the tombstone also says that 'This stone was erected by the brothers wife, sons and friends of Don Tomas Blamire'. 'On the bottom plinth it says this stone is the property of Dona Rosa Blamire el Levason and then something about the name Liddell. This was the name of Thomas’ mother'.

A translation of his last message reads:

“My last words to my brethren are-
Give yourselves anew to the Lord
to live as never before unto him;
And my last word to the unsaved –
That they flee unto Christ from the
wrath to come before it is too late”.9,14
