Location Information: Flesquieres is a village at the junction of the D92 and D89 roads, about 5 kilometres south-west of the main road from Cambrai to Bapaume. The Cemetery lies a little east of the village on the south (right) side of the D92 road to Cantaing. Historical Information: Flesquieres village was attacked by the 51st (Highland) Division, with tanks, on the 20th November 1917, in the Battle of Cambrai, but held for a time by a German officer with a few men; it was captured on the 21st. It was lost in the later stages of the battle, and retaken on the 27th September 1918, by the 3rd Division. Flesquieres Hill Cemetery was originally made by the 2nd Division, in 1918, behind a German cemetery ("Flesquieres Soldiers' Cemetery No.2"); but the German graves were removed after the Armistice to FLESQUIERES COMMUNAL CEMETERY GERMAN EXTENSION (which in its turn was removed, with 583 graves, in 1924). Plots III-VIII were created on the site of the German cemetery and in them were reburied 688 British soldiers from the battlefields of Havrincourt, Flesquieres, Marcoing and Masnieres and from a few other burial grounds, including:- ABANCOURT COMMUNAL CEMETERY GERMAN EXTENSION (Nord), in which 38 British soldiers and four men of the Chinese Labour Corps were buried in 1917-18. (The four Chinese burials were re-buried in Ayette Indian and Chinese Cemetery). HAVRINCOURT COMMUNAL CEMETERY, from which four British soldiers were taken to Achiet-le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension and three to Flesquieres. HAYNECOURT GERMAN CEMETERY, on the South side of the village, from which eight British graves were removed to Flesquieres and two to H.A.C. Cemetery, Ecoust-St. Mein, and 138 German to other cemeteries. MASNIERES-CREVECOEUR ROAD CEMETERY, CREVECOEUR SUR-L'ESCAUT, where 13 New Zealand soldiers and seven of the Devons were buried in October, 1918. MASNIERES GERMAN CEMETERY, South of Masnieres, used by the New Zealand Division for eleven burials in October, 1918. RIBECOURT CHURCHYARD, in which four Canadian, one Australian and three British soldiers were buried in 1916-1917. 63RD DIVISION CEMETERY, between MARCOING and Villers-Plouich, made by the Royal Naval Division at the end of 1917, which contained 41 graves. There are now over 900, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, over one-third are unidentified and special memorials are erected to five officers and men from the United Kingdom and two from New Zealand, known or believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials record the names of three men of the R.N.D., buried at the end of 1917 in the 63rd Division Cemetery, Marcoing, whose graves were destroyed by shell fire. The cemetery covers an area of 3,797 square metres. No. of Identified Casualties: 589.³'

     Frank Edwin Conquer was born in 1882 at Middlesex, England; and his birth was recorded at Edmonton registration office in the December quarter 1882.^1,2 He married Bertha Annie Jane Daborn, daughter of William Daborn Tickner and Bertha Mary Viner, on 30 March 1918 at St Peter, Frimley, Camberley, Surrey, England; and their marriage was recorded at Farnham record office in the March quarter 1918.^1,3 Frank Edwin Conquer died in 1918 at Hampshire, England; and his death was recorded at Hartley W registration office in the December quarter 1918.⁴

      Her married name was Philbrook.¹ Louise Mary Elizabeth Hartley was born in 1904 at London, England; and her birth was recorded at Lewisham Registration district in the June quarter 1904.^3,2 She was the daugher of Gordon Charles Hartley and Mary Faggeter, who were both born in London and whose marriage was recorded at Lewisham Registration district in the March quarter 1902. Her father is recorded as a Canadian Soldier in the First World War records in the Library and Archives Canada, date of birth 07/02/1878. He died in Victoria on 29 December 1957 aged 78. She married William Eric Philbrook, son of George Edward Philbrook and Esther Jane Dove Colyer, on 20 September 1930 at Centennial United Church, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; as Louise Mary Hartley and Eric William Philbrook; he was a 23 year old Machinist; she gave her occupation as 'At home' and she was 26 years of age.^3,8 Louise Mary Elizabeth Hartley and William Eric Philbrook had their marriage fully reported in the Victoria Times, captioned 'Colquitz Pretty Bride. Miss Louise Hartley Married Saturday to Eric Philbrook' on 22 September 1930.⁹ Louise Mary Elizabeth Hartley and William Eric Philbrook are believed to have had children.¹⁰ Louise Mary Elizabeth Hartley lived circa 1994 at Canada.¹¹

     Ray Dennis Wooldridge was born on 15 December 1906 at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.^1,2,3 He was the Son of Albert Wooldridge, an Estate Agent in 1916, and Kate Augusta Dunleavy.^4,5,6,7 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at First Floor, 11 Lorne Road, Stroud Green, London, England, as Son of Kate Augusta Wooldridge, age 4, birthplace Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. His port of arrival was Seattle and he was a Farmer from Verdier Avenue, Saanich, British Columbia. He was had around four days remaining of a business visit on 3 March 1944.¹³ He lived at Brentwood Bay, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.¹⁴ He or 'Pop (as all 8 of us grand-kids affectionately called Ray)' writes his granddaughter 'was a wonderful person always with a story to tell. He was a bulb farmer then wholesale flower business owner. When he passed away his daughters took over the business and just a few years ago they closed it down as they were just getting too old to worry about the business anymore.¹⁴' He died circa 1996 at British Columbia, Canada.¹⁴

     George Thomas Callow was born on 11 September 1877 at Middlesex, England; and his birth was recorded at Shoreditch Registration district, in the December quarter 1877.² He was the son of George Thomas Callow and Laura Lavinia Low.¹ George Thomas Callow was baptized on 30 September 1877 at St Mark, Shoreditch, Middlesex, England.^1,3,4 He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 57 Hoxton Street, Shoreditch, Middlesex, England, as Son, age 3, birthplace Shoreditch, Middlesex.¹ He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 57 Hoxton Street, Shoreditch, London, England, as Son, age 13, birthplace Shoreditch, London, and he was a Scholar.⁵ He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Sea View Villa, Leigh Road, Hadleigh, Essex, England, as Son, age 23, birthplace Shoreditch, London, and he worked at home as a Carpenter.⁶ He married Emily Godfrey on 25 December 1903 at St Mary, Walthamstow, Essex, England; and their marriage was recorded at West Ham Registration district in the December quarter 1903. Emily Godfrey was a Spinster.^7,8,9,10 George Thomas Callow submitted a building plan to Benfleet Urban District Council as 'Owner, Architect and Builder: G.T. Callow (junior)' circa 1908 at Stable and Cart Shed, Castle Lane, Hadleigh, Essex, England.¹¹ He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at Belma Cottage, London Road, Hadleigh, Essex, England, as G T Callow, married, age 33, birthplace Hoxton N. London, England and he was a General Dealer. His wife and daughter completed the household.⁷ He was in the British Army during the Great War serving in the Royal Engineers (Regimental Number: 259177. Other Regimental Numbers: 258177, 505758) and his Service Records at The National Archives list him as a Painter and Decorator of Belma Cottages, Hadleigh, Essex, with a wife and child.¹⁰ He and Arthur Henry Callow were executor of their Father's will and the entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: 'Callow George Thomas of Belina Villa High-road Hadleigh Essex died 29 March 1916 Probate London 7 November to George Thomas Callow builder and Arthur Henry Callow painter.¹²' George Thomas Callow died on 9 May 1953 at Essex, England, at age 75; and his death was recorded at Thurrock Registration district in the June quarter 1953.^13,14 His estate was probated; and he was 'of Castle View Castle Hill Hadleigh Essex' and Probate was granted to his widow on 12 June 1953.
