      John Farquhar Shaw also went by the name of Jack Shaw.¹ He was born on 2 January 1899 at 154 Odessa Road, Forest Gate, Essex, England; and his birth was recorded at West Ham Registration district in the March quarter 1899. His Mother informed the Registrar on 14th February 1899 and gave his Father's occupation as Milk Carrier.^2,3,4 He was the son of Farquhar Collins Shaw and Florence Ann Howell.² John Farquhar Shaw was christened on 14 September 1899 at St Matthew, Essex Road, Islington, London, England; at which time his family resided at 154 Odessa Road, Forest Gate.⁵

He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 8 Rosaville Road, Fulham, London, England, as Son, age 2, birthplace Forest Gate, Essex.² He lived circa 16 April 1907 at 35 Thackeray Road, West Ham, Essex, England.⁴ He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at 51 Seymour Road, East Ham, Essex, England, as Son, age 12, birthplace Forest Gate, Essex.⁶

He emigrated to Canada in streerage aboard the Lake Manitoba with his parents and siblings sailing from Liverpool, England, arriving at the Port of Montreal on 29th June 1913 and then on to London Ontario, arriving on 1 July 1913. 'The family resided shortly thereafter at 33 Garfield Avenue, London, Ontario.^7,4,8'

He has been researched by his Great nephew who writes: 'Falsifying his age by adding one year, he joined the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force on August 28, 1915. Medical records show he was 5’4” in height, fair complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair, with a mole on his left elbow and a scar on his right forearm. He was assigned to the 34^th Battalion with service #603137. His military file indicates he assigned half his monthly pay of $30 to his mother, Florence Ann Shaw.

'He left Canada for England aboard the S.S. California 23 October, 1915, arriving 1 November, 1915. He spent the winter in England and was transferred to the 23^rd Battalion on 3 February, 1916, and transferred once more to the 13^th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment) on 1 May, 1916. He arrived in France the next day and joined his unit in the field 22 May, 1916.

'On 11 June, 1916 he was injured in the field, suffering multiple contusions and was admitted the next day to the hospital at #1 Division Rest Station and subsequently returned to duty on 14 June, 1916.⁴

He died on 27 June 1916 at age 17; as 'Less than 2 weeks later, Private John Shaw was killed in action in France on 27 June, 1916. He was posthumously awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal, which were delivered to his father along with a plaque and scroll. His mother was presented with a silver Memorial Cross'.

'With no known grave, John Shaw is listed on the Menin Gate Memorial, situated at the eastern side of the town of Ypres (now Ieper) in the Province of West Flanders, on the road to Menin and Courtrai. It bears the names of 55,000 men who were lost without trace during the defense of the Ypres Salient in the First World War.

'His name is also listed on page 161 of the (Canadian) First World War Book of Remembrance. This page is displayed for public viewing on April 12 each year in the Memorial Chamber of the Parliament of Canada.'

YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL'

'The Menin Gate is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders which cover the area known as the Ypres Salient. Broadly speaking, the Salient stretched from Langemarck in the north to the northern edge in Ploegsteert Wood in the south, but it varied in area and shape throughout the war. The Salient was formed during the First Battle of Ypres in October and November 1914, when a small British Expeditionary Force succeeded in securing the town before the onset of winter, pushing the German forces back to the Passchendaele Ridge. The Second Battle of Ypres began in April 1915 when the Germans released poison gas into the Allied lines north of Ypres. This was the first time gas had been used by either side and the violence of the attack forced an Allied withdrawal and a shortening of the line of defence. There was little more significant activity on this front until 1917, when in the Third Battle of Ypres an offensive was mounted by Commonwealth forces to divert German attention from a weakened French front further south. The initial attempt in June to dislodge the Germans from the Messines Ridge was a complete success, but the main assault north-eastward, which began at the end of July, quickly became a dogged struggle against determined opposition and the rapidly deteriorating weather. The campaign finally came to a close in November with the capture of Passchendaele. The German offensive of March 1918 met with some initial success, but was eventually checked and repulsed in a combined effort by the Allies in September. The battles of the Ypres Salient claimed many lives on both sides and it quickly became clear that the commemoration of members of the Commonwealth forces with no known grave would have to be divided between several different sites. The site of the Menin Gate was chosen because of the hundreds of thousands of men who passed through it on their way to the battlefields. It commemorates those of all Commonwealth nations, except New Zealand, who died in the Salient, in the case of United Kingdom casualties before 16 August 1917 (with some exceptions). Those United Kingdom and New Zealand servicemen who died after that date are named on the memorial at Tyne Cot, a site which marks the furthest point reached by Commonwealth forces in Belgium until nearly the end of the war. Other New Zealand casualties are commemorated on memorials at Buttes New British Cemetery and Messines Ridge British Cemetery. The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer 24 July 1927.^4,9,10'

      Her married name was Shaw.¹ June Rose Heinritz was born on 17 February 1927 at Baltimore, Maryland, United States of America; and her parents were George Henritz and Charlotte Wooden.^2,3 She married Frank Collins Shaw, son of Farquhar Collins Shaw and Florence Ann Howell, on 15 February 1950 at United States of America.^1,4 June Rose Heinritz gained a Masters Degree at Baltimore University and was a Director of a Hospital Pharmacy.¹ She died on 8 August 2005 at Marietta, Cobb, Georgia, United States of America, at age 78.¹ She was the subject of an obituary it is probable giving her age at 78, published in the Marietta Daily Journal on 12 August 2005.⁵
