He was in the Army in the Great War [WWI 1914-1918] and The National Archives contain his British Army Pension Record. This record includes his Short Service Attestation paper which was completed on 26 August 1916 at Stratford, London, and gives his address as Granton, Matlock Road, Leyton. He was 33 years and ten months old, married and a Traveller's Clerk. He was 5 feet 9 inches tall and gave his Wife as his next-of-kin. He was moved to the Army Pay Corps, number 12482 and his Medical History indicates he had congenital heart problems. Among his records is a letter from his employers since 8 July 1896 dated 22 March 1917, Rickett Cockerell & Co. Ltd., Coal and Coke Merchants, Head Office, Tower Square, London, E.C. recommending him as suitable for the Army Pay Corps. He was discharged on 19 March 1919 and awarded an Army Pension.⁷
