"Jerry" Jones passed away in Grass Valley on June 30, 2012, after the sudden onset of a grave illness. His loving family surrounded Jerry at the time of his passing. He was 73.

'Jerry was born on July 12, 1938, in Live Oak, California to parents Kenneth Jones and Laura (Nesmith) Jones. He was raised in Live Oak and became accustomed to hard work in the nearby orchards, a work ethic he carried throughout his life. He was also an avid outdoorsman, particularly enjoying camping, fishing, and hunting. He developed lifelong resourcefulness and reverence for nature as a Boy Scout.

'He graduated Live Oak High School in 1956, and attended College in Yuba County and the University of Nevada, Reno. He balanced academics with demanding varsity athletics and was a skilled football player. Jerry worked in road construction and design, spending the large majority of his over 40-year career working for CalTrans.

'Jerry eventually settled in the Grass Valley area and married Lucille Seghezzi in 1975. Their son, Christopher was born in 1978, and they welcomed their daughter-in-law, Cristina Waid , into the family in 2009. Their granddaughter, Elisa was born in 2010. Jerry had tremendous pride in his son's military service and recent promotion to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Coast Guard. Jerry treasured visits and frequent video chats with his granddaughter, son and daughter-in-law. He was devoted to his family above all else and will be remembered for the love, affection, support and strength he provided as a husband, father and grandfather. He had many battles in life, and family was always the reason he gave for continuing to persevere.

'His preference for fresh air and sunshine, and his experience in agriculture, gave him a love for gardening. He dutifully maintained the family's large vegetable and flower gardens and numerous fruit trees for many years, a project he shared with his wife, son and father-in-law. He was also a caring master to hunting dogs and many family pets, and especially enjoyed experiencing nature with animal companions. His beautiful landscaping, as well as the example he set caring for all living things, will stand as an enduring part of his legacy on earth.

'Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Laura; his parents-in-law, Louis and Rose Seghezzi; and his beloved daughter, Geri Lee Jones.

'He is survived by his wife, Lucille; his son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Cristina; his granddaughter, Elisa; his brother and sister-in-law, Phil and Judy Jones; his brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Darla Jones; sister-in-law, Virginia Jones; nephews, Terrence, Kenneth, K.C., and Gregory; nieces, Jennifer, Lisa and Denise; grandnieces and nephews; and many other cherished family members, as well as treasured friends.

'Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 7, 2012, at the Nevada City Chapel of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary, followed by a graveside service at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Grass Valley. A reception will follow.

'Remembrances may be made to the Cancer Society or the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary.
