'Pommereuil is a village 3 kilometres east of Le Cateau. The British Cemetery is on the south side of the D959, Le Cateau to Landrecies.
'Pommereuil was the scene of severe fighting on 23-24 October 1918 and the cemetery was made by the 25th Division after the capture of the village. Pommereuil British Cemetery contains 173 First World War burials. It originally contained a wooden memorial to the 20th Manchesters, who erected it to their officers and men who fell on the 23rd October. The cemetery was designed by W H Cowlishaw'.
The Devonshire Regiment in World War One Campaigns records for The 8th and 9th (Service) Battalions provides further information: '...By the end of January 1918 both Battalions were in Northern Italy on the Piave front, where they remained until the 9th were returned to France in September. In early October the 9th broke through the German line at Beaurevoir on the Somme and on the 23rd captured Pommereuil despite high casualties. On the same day the 8th captured Papadopoli Island and took part in the final advance on the Italian front, chasing a collapsing Austrian Army...6,9,10,11'
His estate was probated on 17 May 1919; and he was of The Lodge Lincoln's Inn, died at Le Cateau, France on active service.12

Both parties were of Full Age and were of Rayleigh. She was the daughter of Edward Neale and he was the son of John Nokes, Farm Bailiff. She signed as Ann Neal and he as Abraham Nokes. Although the Parish Register gives their names as Abraham Noakes and Ann Neale. Their witnesses were Susannah Nokes and John Wright; the latter witness signed with his mark X.
