Arthur Enefer was born before 28 November 1886 at Little Baddow, Essex, England; and his birth was recorded at Chelmsford Registration district in the December quarter 1886.1,2 He was baptized on 28 November 1886 at St John the Baptist, Danbury, Essex, England.3 He was the son of Thomas Day Enefer and Alice Townsend.1 Arthur Enefer appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at Pattentees, Little Baddow, Essex, England, as Son, age 4, birthplace Little Baddow, Essex, and he was a Scholar.1 He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Eve's Corner, Danbury, Essex, England, as Son, age 13, birthplace Little Baddow, Essex.4 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at Eve's Corner, Danbury, Essex, England, as Son, age 24, single, birthplace Little Baddow, Essex, and he was a Gardener.5
He died on 3 November 1917; of wounds in the Egyptian Theatre whilst serving in the British Army in The Great War, when he was aged 31 years. He was with the 1st/5th Battalion of the Essex Regiment, Service number 251084.6,7
He was buried at Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Deir El Belah, Israel and Palestine (including Gaza); as the Son of 'Thomas and Annie Enefer' and his personal inscription reads: 'ALL HE HAD HOPED FOR ALL HE HAD HE GAVE.8,9' He was commemorated locally on The Cross of Remembrance WW1 & WW2, in Danbury, Essex, England, dedicated on 31 July 1920, and is listed as 'A. Enefer' at the top of one of the panels. The dedication reads: 'In Thankfulness to God and the Memory of the Men of Danbury who fell in The Great War MDCCCCXIV, MDCCCCXV111'.
In 2015 Rosie Bartley-Crozier researched the biographies of each of those named on the Danbury War Memorial and on the tablet within St John ’s Church, Danbury, including Arthur Enefer: 'Arthur was born in Little Baddow in 1886, the fifth of eight children of Thomas Enefer, (born Danbury 1845) a general labourer, and his wife Alice (born Danbury 1852) who was a dressmaker. Arthur’s siblings were Edith (1881), Albert (1882), Percy (1884), Mary (1886), Emily (1891) Daisy (1892) and Walter (1895). In 1891 the family was living at Pattentees, Awkward Square, Little Baddow. In 1901 and 1911 they were at Eves Corner, Danbury. Arthur served as a Private with the Essex Regiment, 1st/5th Battalion. He died of wounds on 3rd November 1917 aged 31 while in Palestine. The Roll of Honour in the Essex County Chronicle of November 16th 1917 notes that he had three brothers also serving with the colours. His service number was 251084. He is buried in Deir el Belah War Cemetery, grave ref. B.86. At the time of his death Arthur was a resident of Battlesbridge.10,11'
