Kenneth Horatio Mostyn was born on 20 November 1915 at London, England; and his birth was recorded at St Marylebone Registration district in the December quarter 1915.1,3 He was the son of Frederick Abraham Israel Moses and Olive Mary Newton.2 Kenneth Horatio Mostyn was recorded as a passenger sailing on the Empress of Britain returning from Quebec, Canada, to Southampton, England, as age 18, Student, of 26 Grove Road, London, NW8 on 6 September 1934.4 He lived between 1936 and 1939 at 12 Gresham Gardens, Golders Green, London, England.5 He married Doris Irma Horwizt Clarke in 1940 at Kent, England; and their marriage was recorded at Thanet Registration district in the March quarter 1940.6,7 Kenneth Horatio Mostyn lived between 1946 and December 2003 at 2 Stonard Road, Palmers Green, London, England.8,6 He was executor for his Mother and the 1956 National Probate Calendar records Olive Mary Mostyn was 'of 12 Gresham Gardens Golders Green London N.W.11. widow' and Probate was granted at London 'to Gwladys Mary Harrop married woman and Kenneth Horatio Mostyn caterer' on 29 February 1956.9 He lived between 2002 and 2003 at London, England.10 He married Prunella Brown in August 2003 at England.6 Kenneth Horatio Mostyn died on 13 December 2003 at Middlesex, England, at age 88; and his death was recorded at Enfield Registration district, in that month.3,11 He was commemorated in the following Guild of Scholars of the City of London obituary: 'Kenneth H Mostyn - Father of the Guild By Peter B Mayhew (CLS 1944-52) Court Assistant

'It is with deep sadness that we advise members of the death of Kenneth Mostyn, Father of the Guild, on 13th December 2003 at the age of 88.

'He was educated at the City of London School (1924-34), where his father, Frederick Mostyn CC, became a Governor.

'He joined the Honourable Artillery Company in 1938 and was commissioned into the Royal Army Service Corps which he left as a Captain. In WW2 he saw action in the European theatre and was a member of one of the earliest formations to enter Germany after D-Day.

'After the War he joined Beal’s Ltd where he became a director with special responsibility for the bakery division. After four years he left and bought a hotel business in Blackpool which he ran successfully for many years.

'Retiring from the hotel business he moved back to London to a house in Winchmore Hill, and lived there for many years until his death. By his first wife, Irma, he had a son Peter (CLS 1954-64) who, like his father, became a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Bakers. Kenneth married his second wife, Ella Brown, in August 2003. Ella had looked after him for many years.

'Kenneth joined the Baker’s Company as a Liveryman in 1937, became an Assistant in 1959, and served as Master from November 1972. He was also a Freemason, initiated into the Lodge of the Worshipful Company of Bakers, Laus Deo in 1946, and subsequently that of his old school, the John Carpenter Lodge. His lifetime of service in Freemasonry was recognised when he was made an Officer of the United Grand Lodge of England, an appointment he was proud to accept.

'In 1973, during his time as Master of the Baker’s Company, Kenneth, together with three other Old Citizens (all now deceased) Jack Diamond, a pre-war Master of the Blacksmith’s Company, Bill Grain, a Past Master of the Scriveners Company, and one of the Baldrey brothers, met to discuss the idea that it might be useful to collect together a group of Liverymen who might possibly rekindle their interest in the CLS, the history, present and future of the City of London and, at the same time help other OC’s to become Freemen of the City and perhaps Liverymen. A small committee was formed and the most senior Past Master present, Jack Diamond, was elected Chairman. The group would be known as O.C. Liverymen.

'Kenneth became chairman of O.C. Liverymen in 1975, a position he held for the next 14 years during which time membership of the group had grown to over 250. His knowledge of Livery Companies and the City was second to none and we all learnt a great deal from him. Besides encouraging OC’s to become Freemen, he also introduced a significant number of candidates for the Livery, some of whom today sit on the Court of their Companies.

'In 1999 O.C Liverymen became the Guild of Scholars and, in recognition of his commitment and dedication as Chairman of OCL he was unanimously elected by the Court as Father of the Guild, an honour he was both delighted and proud to accept.

'Kenneth was a kindly, courteous and good-humoured man and a good friend who loved his City and the School, we had much to be grateful to him for, and he will be greatly missed by all of us who are left to carry on his work.

'The Guild sends its condolences to his widow Ella, his son Peter and all the family.6'

Ephraim Mosely was born in 1807 at Westminster, London, England.4,1,5 He was the son of Benjamin Issachar (Moses) Mosely and Rose (Raze) Levy.2,3 Ephraim Mosely married Julia Alex, daughter of Solomon Alex and Rachael Jones, circa 1830.1,6 Ephraim Mosely was a Dentist and Cameron Hawke-Smith says of The Moselys they were 'perhaps as equally numerous a dental dynasty as the Joneses '. He was known to be in practice in London from 1840 and he also had a Paris practice.7,8 Sellick writes 'Cheltenham was also the domicile of one Ephraim Mosely, who was shochet and mohel in 1834 [Footnote 91], the Secretary of the Synagogue in 1844 [Footnote 92] , and by trade he was listed as a boot and shoe maker in 1839 [Footnote 93]. In spite of this last fact, he is possibly the Ephraim Mosely who first visited Whitehaven in 1861, and advertised that he was "of the firm of Ephraim Mosely & Sons, surgeons dentists, 9 Grosvenor Street, London and 10 Eldon Square Newcastle-upon-Tyne"[Footnote 94]. His visit was in response to "numerous applications from the friends and patients of his late brother, Mr Charles Mosely ... for continuing the practice". He offered a "great reduction in prices" and used "vulcanite India Rubber" as a base for false teeth. E. Mosely made several visits to Whitehaven in 1861 and 1862[Footnote 95], after which the town was no longer included in his itinerary.9' He appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Haymarket, St Martin in the Fields, London, England, as Ephrem Mosely, age 30, born in Middlesex, and he was a Dentist.10 He appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at 61 Grosvenor Street, Grosvenor Square, Westminster, London, England, (Transcribed as Sphsain Moneley) as Head, married, age 42, birthplace St Mary Whitechapel, Middlesex, and he was a Surgeon Dentist. He was living with his Wife Julia and Sons Benjamin and John. A Housemaid, Cook and Nurse completed the household.11

He was granted patent number 1128 as 'Ephraim Mosely, of Grosvenor Street, in the County of Middlesex, Dentist, for an invention for— "Improvements in the manufacture of artificial masticating apparatus" Letters Patent sealed ' on 21 December 1852.12 He was advertising in 'The Daily News' his 'White India Rubber' artificial teeth, gums and palates also giving addresses at 22 Gay-street, Bath and 34 Grainger-street, Newcastle-on-Tyne on 26 August 1853 at 61 Grosvenor Street, London, England.13 He was advertising in the 'Northumberland History and Directory', 1855 as follows:

'Mosely Ephraim and Son, dentists, 34 Grainger Street and 61 Grosvenor Street, London'

in 1855.14 He was advertising in the 'Daily News' from three addresses: 61 Lower Grosvenor Street, London; 14 Gay street, Bath, and 10 Eldon square, Newcastle upon Tyne in 1856.15 He was advertising his 'Chemically Prepared White and Gum-Coloured India Rubber' artificial teeth in the frontpage advertisement section of 'The Times', London - the only page where advertisements appeared - under the heading of 'Teeth'. It appeared in the advertisement that he had recently changed his London premises from 61 Grosvenor Street to nearby on 9 January 1858 at 9 Lower Grosvenor Street, Grosvenor Square, Westminster, London, England.16 He was advertising his dental practices at London and Hertford in conjunction with his Sons - his London premises were given as 5 Grosvenor Street, Grosvenor Square, London, and 'Mr Roberts', Saddler, Market Place, Hertford' is where consultations took place on every alternate Saturday.17

He appeared on the census of 30 March 1861 at 9 Grosvenor Street, Grosvenor Square, Westminster, London, England, as Ephraim Moseley, Head, married, age 53, birthplace London, Middlesex, and he was a Surgeon Dentist. He was living with his Wife Julia, Daughter Maria, Sons John and Alexander, and Daughter-in-law Leah. A Footman, a Cook and two Housemaids completed the household.18

He was the author of 'Teeth, their natural history : with the physiology of the human mouth in regard to artificial teeth', published in London by Robert Hardwicke in 1862. A bookseller has reviewed the book as follows:

'Mosely was a practising "Surgeon Dentist" of Grosvenor Street in London, apparently also with a practice in Bath. This booklet is good-humoured effort to promote the profession, and public awareness. The final chapter is on "Patented invention of Caoutchouc Fixtures, for Artificial Teeth, sustained by atmospheric pressure." This he claims as his own invention, while acknowledging the improvements which Goodyear made in rubber technology.19,20'

He was advertising on 17 March 1863 in 'The Leighton Buzzard Observer and Linslaid Gazette' Newspaper ['Advertising Medium for Beds., Bucks., Herts., Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire'] on the subject of Artificial Teeth:

'Summary: Advertisement by Messrs. Ephraim MOSELY and Sons of Grosvenor Street, Grosvenor Square, London, for his newly invented 'special application' artificial teeth, gums and palates. He was known to be advertising his dental practice circa 1873.22 He left a will on 24 April 1873; with a codicil dated 12 November 1873.3 He lived on 24 April 1873 at 5 Grosvenor Street, Grosvenor Square, Westminster, London, England; and 15 Rue Montaigu, Paris, France.23 He died on 18 December 1873 at 15 Rue Montaigne, Seine, Paris, Île-de-France, France; and he was also 'Gentleman' of 5 Grosvenor-street in the County of Middlesex.22,24' He was the subject of an obituary /Death Notice in The Bedfordshire Mercury on 27 December 1873.25 His estate was probated on 26 January 1874; and Hillam says 'It is not unusual to find dentist sons [of dentists] named as executors [in Probate records], as in the case of Ephraim Mosely (d. 1873) (who assigned this duty to three of his sons, Benjamin Ephraim, Alexander and Alfred Isaiah).26,27'
