He was the son of Hugh Bowie and Alison Davidson.1 Hugh Bowie appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at High Street, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland, as age 7 and he was born in the county.5 He appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at 18 High Street, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland, as Son, age 17, birthplace Linlithgow, Linlithgowshire, and he was a Journeyman Shoemaker.6 He married Mary Alison, daughter of Alexander Alison and Dorothea Hardy, on 24 November 1857 at Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland; both lived in the High Street and signed the Register. Hugh was a Journeyman Shoemaker and Mary was a Domestic Servant.7,8 Hugh Bowie and Mary Alison lived at 42 High Street, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland; and 'The Victoria Cafe in the photograph in Linlithgow in Pictures by A. The household also contained his Wife, Mary, Children: Dorothie and Hugh, and five Lodgers.10 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 46 Main Street, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland, as Head, married, age 37, birthplace Linlithgow, Linlithgowshire, and he was a Shoemaker (master Employing 3 Men & 1 Boy).11 He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at Meadowhead, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland, as Head, widower, age 47, birthplace Linlithgow, Linlithgow and he was a Bootmaker employing 3 Men and 4 Boys. His daughters Dorothy and Mary and son John completed the household.12 He married Elizabeth Todd Hamilton on 28 February 1882 at Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland.13,14 Hugh Bowie appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at Str Meadowhead, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland, as Head, married, age 57, birthplace Linlithgow, Linlithgowshire, and he was a Boot and Shoemaker.       Alison Davidson was also known as Elison Bowie.2 Her married name was Bowie.1 She was born on 4 February 1805 and her parents were John Davidson and Margaret Youl(e) or Yule. Between 1798 and 1810 John was designated as a 'Weaver in Dunse'. Her recorded siblings were: Agnes born 16 April1798, Robert born 27 April 1800, Margaret born 1 Septembr 1802, Janet born 24 September 1807 and Katharine born 1 February 1810.3,4 She was christened on 2 March 1805 at Duns, Berwickshire, Scotland.3,5 She married Hugh Bowie, son of Hugh Bowie and Isobel Morhead Davison, on 21 November 1829 at Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland.6 Alison Davidson and Hugh Bowie lived at 19 High Street, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland; which 'is part of the building to the left of the photo. The building was demolished about 1885 to make way for St Michaels Hotel.7'

He married Elizabeth Bowell on 3 November 1668 at Send, Surrey, England; and Richard is believed to have been a Widower as the Parish Registers of Horsell give a person of his name as being the father of several children.2 Richard Roake left a will on 16 February 1709/10; Richard Roake of Horsell, yeoman, snr., in years 16 Feb 1709/10 (to poor of Horsell £2) to my son Richard all great tithes from land Kettlewell, Horsell and land I bought from (Lord) Longford; to my son Henry Roake my copyhold land in Woking in the occupation of Joseph Wicker and 4 acres of freehold land I bought from John Davy in Woking also in the occupation of Joseph Wicker near said copyhold land, all my messuage at Grove Carrs, Horsell and great tithes and 2 acres of meadow in Walsham Mead, Pyrford and a half acre of meadow in Townslow Mead, Pyrford and 5 acres of meadow Eastmead alias Chertsey Mead, Chertsey paying to my grandchildren £1 each; to my daughter Ann Edmead wife of Henry Edmead of Horsell, gentleman my biggest bed and its trappings; to Ann Edmead daughter of Henry Edmead least bed and its trappings except sheets in the two beds; to Ann Roake daughter of John Roake of Horsell, deceased my chest of drawers; residue to my eldest son Richard, exec.
