Guy's Hospital; Desmond George Grenville Levason, Birmingham University ...' so he apparently started training as a Dentist before the outbreak of the Great War [WWI 1914-1918].9

He appears to have enlisted immediately the Great War [WWI 1914-1918] broke out in August 1914, as the following notice appeard in The London Gazette Issue 28886 published on the 1 September 1914:

'The Herefordshire Regiment. The undermentioned to be Second Lieutenants. Dated 2nd September,1914:— ... Desmond George Grenville Levason.10'

He was listed in The Times 20 September 1915 as 'Previously Reported Missing Now Reported Not Missing Levason Sec Lt DGG, 1st Hereford Regt' in the Mediterranean.11

He married Ida Milnes, daughter of Joe Henry Milnes and Louisa Helen Elliott, on 26 January 1916 at St Nicholas, Hereford, Herefordshire, England; and their marriage was registered in the March quarter 1916 at Hereford Registration district.12,13,14

Captain Desmond George Grenville Levason and Ida Milnes and their marriage was reported in The Hereford Times with a photograph and in The Huddersfield Examiner.15,14 Captain Desmond George Grenville Levason was listed during the Great War [WWI] in The London Gazette Issue 29995 published on the 20 March 1917 as follows:

'Herefordshire Regt. The undermentioned 2nd Lts. to be temp. Lts.:— D.G.G.Levason.20th Jan.1916.16'

He died on 27 March 1917; as Captain, 1st/1st Bn., Herefordshire Regiment and 'Son of Peyton Grenville Levason and Elizabeth Levason, of Wallington House, Hereford; husband of Ida Levason, of "Odersfelt," 1, Fisher Drive, Southport.17,2,18,19,20,21'

He was buried after 27 March 1917 at Gaza War Cemetery, Gaza, Israel; and his grave/memorial reference is XVI. F. 7.

According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission information on Gaza it 'is 3 kilometres inland from the Mediterranean coast, 65 kilometres south-east of Tel Aviv'. 'At the end of March 1917, it was attacked and surrounded by the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in the First Battle of Gaza, but the attack was broken off when Turkish reinforcements appeared.22,23,24'

He was the subject of an obituary in The Southport Visitor of 7 April 1917: 'Captain Levason was the son-in-law of Mr & Mrs J H Milnes of 1 Fisher Drive, Southport, formerly of Huddersfield. He died of wounds received in the fighting on the Judean border of Palestine..'

He was mentioned in letters (on the Imperial War Museum website, Lives of the First World War) 'from Norman Wells to my maternal grandmother Amiel Robins. Norman visited Levason's wife and parents in law in Southport while he was having musketry training at Altcar. On 5th June 1917 he wrote "Levason's wife seems very well considering what she has gone through, but I don't think she realises that he is dead. She talks quite as though he were still in Egypt and that he is coming home soon. She seemed very bright and was pleased to see me again."
And again on the 9th June 1917 he wrote "Last night I went over to see Mrs Levason's people again but somehow I didn't enjoy it much, I think it is seeing them all in black it got on my nerves ..."
Levason and Wells were both 2nd Lieutenants in the 1st/1st Herefordshire Regiment, and in Egypt in 1917 but not together at the same time. Levason was killed in Gaza in March and Norman Wells in Jerusalem in December.25'

He was commemorated with the following posthumous promotion in The London Gazette Issue 30191 published on the 17 July 1917: 'Herefordshire Regt. 2nd Lt. (temp.Lt.) D.G.G. Levason (since died of wounds) to be Capt., with precedence as from 28th June 1916. 4th July 1917.26'

His estate was probated; and the National Probate Calendar for 1917 contains the following entry:

George Henry With F.R.A.S., F.C.S.1,2

George Henry With F.R.A.S., F.C.S. was born on 14 January 1827 at St Leonard, Shoreditch, London, England.1,3,4,5 He was christened on 25 March 1827 at St Leonard, Shoreditch, London, England; and he was the son of Shoemaker George and Ann With of Pitfield Street.1,6

He was described as a 'successful schoolmaster and a devout churchman' in a booklet published in Hereford after his death in 1904 titled In Memorium A Study in Citizenship, The Late Mr George Henry With, F.R.A.S., F.C.S. and Hereford's 'citizens have always regarded him as a prodigy of astronomical learning'.2 He was educated at St John's College, Battersea, London, England; and '[h]e came out second at the end of his year - a distinction of which any man might feel proud. On more than one occasion he was requested to finish a lecture the Science Master had commenced, an indication of his furue prowess...and for his more advanced studies he is indebted to Trinity College, Dublin. But it must be distinctly remembered that his scientific studies were more for pleasure than profit, though his original researches in the construction and perfection of silvered glass specula for astronomical purposes brought him both fame and profit.2'

'Mr With, like many other distinguished men, was some years before he discovered the exact sphere when his real life's work was to be begun, continued and ended. He presided over several schools before he eventually came to Hereford'. He spent a short time a Sir Robert Peel's Grammar School at Tamworth.2 He married Lavinia Baker on 7 February 1850 at St Mary, Battersea, London, England; and their marriage was registered in the March quarter 1850 at Wandsworth Registration district. George was a Schoolmaster from Alderstoke, Southampton, his father was now a Floor Cloth Manufacturer and Lavinia was from Battersea and her father Henry Baker was a Sadler. They were to have two sons and three daughters.7,8,9

George Henry With F.R.A.S., F.C.S. appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at King's Place, Alverstoke, Hampshire, England, as Head, married, age 23, birthplace Islington St Mary and he was a National School Master; his Wife Lavinia, his 4 month old son George H With and an Apprentice Teacher, John Carpenter, Lodger, completed the household.10 'At the school in Alverstoke, Hampshire, Mr With first met the late Dean Dawes of Hereford, who afterwards became his life-long friend and the good star who guided his destiny. He (the Dean) was on a holiday tour in that neighbourhood, and out of sheer curiosity attended one of Mr With's scientific lectures to children - a novelty in those days, and became profoundly interested in the subject, and also in the lecturer. So much so, that when a vacancy for the Headmaster occurred at the Endowed Blue School, [Hereford] the late Dean wrote and asked him to apply for it. He did so, and with the happiest of results to all concerned. He has sown the seeds which are now coming to maturity in the lives of persons in almost every country under the sun - one is an Indian judge, another a successful barrister, several clergymen, scientists, and hundreds are successful commercial men in our Colonies. His ambition as a teacher was to make MEN out of his boys, - who would not shirk the duties and responsibilities of citizenship; men who felt they had a vocation in life and were anxious to fill it.' according to his friend the writer of A Study in Citizenship.

The author tells us George Henry With was for thirty years to hold 'a unique position in the leading profession of our City [Hereford] as the Headmaster of one of its principle Day Schools, in which office he had the unspeakable satisfaction of laying the foundation of truth, honesty, and manliness in the lives of those who came under his influence. So that when they came to years of maturity some of them felt that the possession of these virtues were more precious and abiding than mere wealth or power.' 'His twenty-five years' record at the Endowed Blue School, and his subsequent engagement as Scientific Lecturer at the Ladies' College (now defunct), placed him in this day in the front rank of science.2'

He was listed in Hereford City in the Post Office Directory of Herefordshire, 1856 as: 'With George Henry, master of Blue school, Blue school lane.11'

He was listed in Hereford in History, Topography & Directory of Herefordshire, 1858 as: 'With G.H., schoolmaster, Blue school ln.12'

He appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at Blue Coat School, Hereford, Herefordshire, England, as Head, married, age 34, birthplace Shoreditch, London, and he was a School Master; his Wife Lavinia, his Sons George H With (age 10) and Alfred Robert (age 9), both Choristers, his Daughters Lavinia (age 6) and Alice (age 2 months) and a House Servant made up the complete household.13 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 20 Blue School Street, Hereford, Herefordshire, England, as Head, married, age 44, birthplace 'London Shoreditch St Leonards', and he was a Schoolmaster. He was living with his Wife Lavinia, Daughters Lavinia, Elizabeth and Alice, and Nephew George Henry Hawkins, age 18, Optical Assistant, birthplace Tooting, Surrey. Also in the household was a Domestic Servant.14 He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 133 Widemarsh Street, Hereford, Herefordshire, England, as Head, married, age 54, birthplace London, Middlesex, and he was an Analytical Chemist. He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 7 Bridge Street, Hereford, Herefordshire, England, as Father-in-Law of Peyton Grenville Levason, widowed, age 64, birthplace St Leonards Shoreditch London, and he was 'Prof. of Science Hereford Ladies Coll. (School)'; his Daughter Elizabeth and Granddaughter Gladys (age 1) completed the household.4 He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 89 Ross Road, Parish of St Martin, Hereford, Herefordshire, England, as Father-in-Law of Peyton Grenville Levason, age 74, widowed, birthplace Islington, London, and he was a 'Retired Professor of Science (School).16'

He died on 13 September 1904 at age 77; at the home of his son-in-law Peyton Levason and his death was registered at Hereford Registration district in the September quarter 1904, at age 77.17,5 He was buried on 17 September 1904; by the side of his wife 'amid every sign of genuine sympathy and respect' at a the service conducted by The Dean and the Rev. Duncombe with the Cathedral Choir singing 'Rock of Ages.2' He left his estate in trust to his children Alfred, Lavinia, Alice and Elizabeth and to his grandson James.5 For a full biography see The life and legacy of G.H. With, 1827-1904 by R.A. Marriott in 1996 who writes 'The introduction of silver-on-glass mirrors in the mid-nineteenth century was an important advance in instrument design providing greater opportunities for the amateur astronomer of modest means. One of the first exponents of this new technology was G.H.With'. The article includes a portrait of him from Hereford City Library.

This is in addition to the booklet quoted from above published after his death in 1904 In Memorium A Study in Citizenship, The Late Mr George Henry With, F.R.A.S., F.C.S. which includes information that '[t]he late Rev. T.W. Webb, vicar of Hardwick, one of Herefordshire's greatest astronomical observers, and Mr With's teacher and friend, speaking of his experiments in what was then a new art, writes in November 1865, as follows:-

' 'Mr With is going on admirably with his specula. Those of the 6.5in. and 5.5in. have I hear, most marvellous definition. He has just sold a splendid thing of 10.5in the performance of which greatly delighted me. With a power of 370 I saw Mu Bootis clearly defined...One of the 10.25 has just been ordered for an Englishman living near Nice. Think of old Hereford being preferred to Paris or Munich' '.

The author includes a second testimony to 'the high position he [Mr With] attained in the realm of science' quoting from an article in the Hereford Times, 2nd February 1889 headed 'Astronomy and Hereford':- Hereford was associated with astronomy by amateur astronomers because of Mr With who in 1864 'after long continued study and experiment' discovered the 'art of producing, with certainty parabolic glass specula of high perfection, for the construction of the Newtonian form of astronomical telescope.' This powerful and perfect instrument was also obtainable at one-fifth of the cost. His specula were currently in use at the University Observatory, Oxford, and at Sir Robert Ball's Observatory at Dunsink, near Dublin'.5,18,2
