He lived in 1934 at 42 Smith Street, Chelsea, London, England; and his telephone number was Flaxman 6302.40 He lived on 18 November 1942 at Garway, Amersham, Buckinghamshire, England; at the time of his Daughter Anna's wedding to Rodney Grant Lawrance Phillips.41 He was referred to by Deborah Colville in: ‘From Aerodiphros to Painless Dentistry: Bloomsbury’s Notable Inventors’ regarding G. H. Jones as follows: '.... I’ve established pretty well beyond a reasonable doubt that his son Leopold Aloysius Jones (b. 1879) transformed himself in the 1920s into the author and journalist Mark Channing, although this identification was not made in Channing’s obituary in The Times (23 December 1943) and I have not yet found a source which gives Channing’s real identity. (Channing was an author who gave up medical studies at Guy’s to fight in the Boer War, and subsequently served for more than 20 years with the Indian Army, leaving in 1920 to become a journalist and author.).42'

He died on 19 December 1943 at Garway, Amersham, Buckinghamshire, England, at age 64; and his death was recorded at Amersham Registration district in the December quarter 1943.4,43,8 He was cremated at Golders Green, London, England.5 He was the subject of an obituary in The Times 23 December 1943 under his pseudonym 'Mr Mark Channing - Author of "Indian Mosaic": '...N.B. writes:-

'A great host of readers of his books will regret the passing of one who had given such pleasure and such help. It was typical of the man that at the time of the Boer War he gave up his career as a medical student at Guys, joined the Irish Guards, and went to South Africa to serve his country. That service over, he joined the Indian Army, and served with considerable distinction in India for 21 years.

'Leaving the Army in 1920 with the rank of major, and after some work for the British Hungarian Bank, he joined the staff of the great French paper Le Temps. He originated and edited the economic supplements. Later, in England, he edited a series of economic supplements for the Morning Post with great success. But he had discovered his real powers and his real work in these years. He wrote a series of short stories which had a very great vogue both here and in America. His first novel, King Cobra became a best seller throughout England, France, Australia and America. Other novels followed, and other short stories and his popularity was at that time world-wide; but in 1936 appeared the book which he loved best and which contained the fruits of his experience in India. Throughout the world Indian Mosaic has been acclaimed because of its great insight into Indian life and Indian problems. Distinguished Indians have acknowledged the complete comprehension of Indian ways of life and thought so brilliantly portrayed.

'Mark Channing was indeed a winsome personality, loyal to the death to his friends, a fierce hater of evil, a lover of all good causes, kindly and gracious. In recent days I was privileged to see much of him and to share some of his inmost thoughts. He was in some respects a very lonely man, but was sustained in his work by the thought that he was able to bring happiness to people he would never know or see. A great linguist, with a special knowledge of many Indian dialects, he had imbibed much of the philosophy of the East. He was accustomed to say that all his books had a spiritual message, but it was to Indian Mosaic that he returned again and again. He greatly desired that it should appear in a popular edition before he died, for he loved India and had something of India's secret.6'

His estate was probated; and The 1943 National Probate Calendar records Leopold Aloysius Matthew Jones or Mark Channing was of 'Garway Quill Hall Lane Amersham Buckinghamshire died 19 December 1943 Probate Llandudno 23 February to Hilda Watkins spinster.8'
