Isaiah Alex was born circa 1803 at England.2 He was the son of Solomon Alex and Rachael Jones.1 He appears in Transcriptions of A Mohel's Register (from 1794 to 1815) by Jacob Leveen, in the University of Southampton Library, as follows:

'Ref Moh 055. Event Circ. Date 1803 [10 Dec]. Hebrew Date 5564 [1st day Hannucah]. Hebrew Name Isaiah. Father Hebrew Selig HaKohen Alex.3,4'

Isaiah Alex married Pamela Isaacs on 23 July 1823 at Great Synagogue, Dukes Place, City of London, London, England.5 Isaiah Alex is mentioned in The Hebrew Community of Cheltenham where Torode says:

'Another member of the family and a Founder Member of the local congregation was Isaiah Alex who had set himself up in the town as a Surgeon Dentist - in 1827 practising from 414 High Street. In 1830 he was advertising in the Cheltenham Journal, his newly invented "anodyne metallic cement". The Cheltenham Free Press of 1835 bears witness to Isaiah's popularity and philanthropy:

'Advice and Attendance to the Poor, Gratis

'Mr I Alex, Surgeon Dentist to His late Royal Highness, Duke of Gloucester, from the many applications he has had for advice and attendance, during professional hours, now informs these persons that they can only receive the same, gratis, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, from eight to ten o'clock.

'When or why Isaiah left Cheltenham is not clear but, in July 1834, he took out an Insurance with Sun Assurance. He is therein described as a dentist of 90 High Street, Cheltenham, and he insured his personal property for £750. In addition he insured 12 Gloucester Place, occupied by Richard Hogue, painter, for £400. By 1843, Isaiah was sending donations to Cheltenham from Brussels, a practice which continued well into the 1850s.6,7,8'

He lived on 7 October 1827 at 414 High Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.9 He was according to Torode, 'originally one of the signatories for the deed of purchase of the site for Cheltenham Synagogue on 20th September 1839 when he was given as:

'Isaiah Alex, late of Cheltenham, Surgeon Dentist.10' '

He and Pamela Isaacs were divorced on 6 November 1848; 'by the Chief Rabbi.11' Isaiah Alex lived on 23 June 1849 at Brussels, Brabant, Belgium; where the death of his Mother occurred in her 76th year.12 He lived on 3 December 1870 at Boulevard de Regent, Brussels, Brabant, Belgium.13 He died on 13 May 1873 at Boulevard de Regent, Brussels, Brabant, Belgium; at his residence.14,15,16

Simeon Cohn Silverstone appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at 6 Bridge Street, St Peter and St Paul, Bath, Somerset, England, as Head, married, age 39, birthplace 'Houndsditch, Middlesex', and he was a Jeweller and Shopkeeper. His wife, son, a visitor and a servant completed the household.10 He was listed in the Directory of Bath, 1852 as: 'Silverstone Simeon C, fancy repository, 6 Argyle Street' in 1852.11 He was listed in Bath in the Post Office Directory of Gloucestershire, Bath & Bristol, 1856 as: '6 Argyle Street, Bath Silverstone Simeon Cohn, toy & fancy warehouse' in 1856.12,13 He was referred in an article in The Bath Magazine, titled The Ghost Signs of Bath, where 'Historian Kirsten Elliott delves into the evolution of advertising and invites us to read the historic writing on the walls of Bath.

'...Ghost signs don’t just appear on walls – they can also be seen on chimney stacks and bressumers. Many appear above shops, like that on McColls’ shop in [Number 6] Argyle Street, where the words Nuremburg House can be seen, as well as some other, fainter letters.

'Around 1858 and 1864 this building was known as the German House, the brainchild of Simeon C Silverstone, who was of Prussian origin. Everything German was fashionable at the time, largely thanks to Prince Albert, who died in 1861. Silverstone capitalised on this by offering a range of goods imported from Germany. The craze only lasted a few years, and on 27 February 1866, Silverstone’s household furniture and remaining stock in trade was sold at auction. But why, when Silverstone always described his business as the German House, does the sign say Nuremburg House? We do not know...'.14,15,16
