According to 'Thomas Cook Travellers Sydney and New South Wales 2nd edition (1998) published by the AA' Broken Hill is by 'far the state's largest outback settlement' and is 'a thriving mining city of some 26,000 people. Silver was discovered here in 1883 and, unlike many outback boom towns, the mining industry has survived. Today, silver, lead and zinc are still mined in large quantities and the city was the birthplace of Broken Hill Proprietary Limited (BHP), Australia's biggest company.'
