Burlington, Ontario, Canada

Burlington, Ontario, population 170,000, is a city located at the western end of Lake Ontario, and is part of the Greater Toronto Area. Named for the town in Yorkshire, the area was opened for settlement following the War of 1812. Burlington itself was incorporated from the amalgamation of smaller communities in 1874. Wheat was the primary local crop until the Prairies increased production in the last half of the nineteenth century. Local farmers then switched to fruit and vegetables. Today Burlington is primarily a bedroom community for both Toronto to its east, and Hamilton to the west.
