Thedford, Ontario, Canada

Thedford, Ontario, population 800, is a small community within the Municipality of Lambton Shores in Lambton County. The community began in the 1860's when a local farmer donated land for the Grand Trunk Railway station on condition that he be given the privilege of naming it. He chose "Thetford" in honour of a town in his native state of Vermont. Due to a clerk's poor handwriting, the name first appeared in the official records with the current spelling, and has never been "corrected". Because the Thedford-Grand Bend Marsh area is a major onion-growing region, the town is known as "the Onion Capital of Canada".
