Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada

Swift Current, Saskatchewan, population 15,000, is a small city in the south western part of the province. It takes its name from that of a nearby creek discovered by the early fur traders. Settlement in the area began in 1881 when a Canadian Pacific survey team arrived. During the early years of the community the economy was based on serving the railway and its employees as it was designated as the freight terminus for Western Canada. There were also several sheep and cattle ranches in the area. Homesteaders began to arrive in the late 1880's, and Swift Current was incorporated as a city on 1914.
