Seigneurie de Noyan

Nouvelle France - Kanada

On April 2 1733 Governor Beauharnois and Intendent Hocuart conceded to Pierre Jacques de Payan, sieur de Noyan, commander of Fort Frontenac, a grant of land which was to known as the Seigniory of Noyan. It measured two leagues in front of the Richelieu River by three leagues in depth, joining to ungranted lands running east and west, together with the Isle aux Têtes  (Island of Heads, where it is claimed Abnakis surprised, killed and beheaded Mohawks, putting the severed heads on poles, Now known as Ash Island) This grant was made subject to the usual conditions , but as nothing was done to comply with them, the seigniory automatically reverted to the Crown under the ordinance of 1741. On July 8, 1743, Seiur Noyan made a renewal application and a new concession was made to him which was ratified by the King’s warrant of March 25 1745. Evidently Noyan made no attempt at settlement in the seigniory even after the renewal.
It was probably circumstances which prevented this and which in 1747 was responsible for the abandonment of any effort to settle this seigniory as well as the other near Lake Champlain.

The lands of the seigniory  of  Noyan passed into the hands of Lieut Col Gabriel Christie March 27 1764, and were added to his other holdings in the Canada , including the lands of the Seigniories of Beaujeu ( Lacolle), L’Islet-du Portage, Repentigny,Chambly, Bleury, Sabrevois, and Lery.

Gabriel Christie had recoginized the valuable natural resources in the region, the development and opportunity the area afforded to add to his already large yearly income and wealth, by opening up the area for settlement. By 1790, he had accomplished in part, where other had failed, to parcel out his lands in individual lots and could count the families of  Fryot, Linton, Cameron, Struthers, Barron, Stillman, Scott, Ward, Leech, Stone, Dunham, Clapper and Dudley amongst his locataires.

The first record we find is of the family of Réné Boileau and his wife Marie Anne Robert, in 1744 we find that they have been register of being of or from the Rivière du Sud, Seigneurie de Noyan.  A person named Boileau appears as the first resident of St Paul  de l'Ile aux Noix. He possessed a farm near the wharf and would appear to have offered the services of an inn or hotel for those passing down the river Chamblee.  The government at the time decided that it would be wiser and or safer to use a deeper channel on the eastern side of the Island and Réné Boileau, a good business man decided to follow thier example. It would appear that Boileau established himself a the mouth of the Rivière du Sud where it joined the mighty Chamblee. The precise location in most liklely on the north-east point separating the two rivers, on land that eventually  came into possession of monsieur Sifroi Fortin., who himself ran a hotel at this location in the 1800's.

Others around the time of  Réné Boileau, had established themselves in the more southern part of the Seigneurie, one on l'Ile Langevin,(Hospital Island)(where later on  Mrs Le Gardeur de Croisille  resided) and the the other on l'Ile aux têtes ( Ash Island) opposite  the bridge at Lacolle .

Apparently in the vicinity on the main land there would have been a small village named St Denis, where there was a missionnary ( on a concession Sieur Foucault donated to the Church). François Laporte dit Labonté , a tenant apparently of the Seigenurie of  Foucault resided  north of Ile aux Têtes, on l'Ile au Sang, where he also ran  an inn or hotel in conjuction with his farm.

Town of Noyan Street map of  Noyan ( circa 2003)   Area  map of Noyan Village of Henryville

This survey map was drawn up in 1796 by the surveyor J Pennoyer showing the first lots established by Colonel Christie . As one can see there is a vast amount of land at that time was not laid out in lots. One must read the inscription at the top corner of the map to fully understand the lay out.

An index map to the concessions of the
Seigneurie de Noyan
circa 1857

IT MUST BE NOTED  THAT THE NUMBERS SHOWN ON THIS MAP ARE NOT THE  NUMBERS ALLOCATED TO THE CONCESSIONS THEMSELVES , BUT THE NUMBERS SHOWN ARE SIMPLY TO ALLOW ONE TO LOCATE THE NAME GIVEN THE PARTICULAR CONCESSION.

FOR EXAMPLE THE NUMBER 10 SHOWN ON THE ABOVE MAP  REPRESENTS CONCESSION  NUMBER 8 ..     SO ONE MUST BE VERY CAREFUL REVIEWING THIS INFORMATION.

This is a map drawn up in 1887 showing the lots of the Parish of St Jacques de Clarenceville, which in Protestant terms is
the Parish of St Thomas (Noyan) and St George ( Clarenceville)
By 1887 the origianl area known as the Seigneurie de Noyan has been greatly reduced, with other Parishes been taken away
however this map reflects more of what we consider today to be Noyan and Clarenceville . so the family names inscribed on this map reflect a majority of the population of the times
Using the abouve tables any one should be able to match the families and the lots they once lived on and where the lot was located on this map.
