Family of George and Mercy Cadby
Wil 000
George was born in 1744 (said James) or ca 1753 (from burial entry) and married Mercy ...
who was born 1751 (said James) and died in 1812. Death entry NOT yet located.
George was buried on 8 Jul 1821,aged 68,living nr The George & Dragon,Livery St,B/ham.
(A letter was sent to him by his son ,John, in 1821.)
A researcher in England uncovered documents in which Mercy Cadby is described
as a "rogue and vagabond" .In her statement , Mercy states that she married
George Cadby in Leeds on 7 Nov, 1775.
I have yet to see a church record of this marriage , but we must assume that
they were a couple . For some reason , George "left her" , such that she was
a �vagabond� by 14th July,1783 in the Parish of St Margaret ,City of
Westminster . She was to be delivered to the parish of St John , Wiltshire
(presumably her native Parish) , certainly the "last place of her legal
settlement". **He may have been in prison!
The document details her two living children as -
"William , aged 3 years and 8 months" , (so born November,1779 ) and
"Ann , aged 10 months" , Bapt 26 Aug 1782 at Devizes St Mary .
This is information given by Mercy herself ,presumably in company of her
children .
From a letter written by George Cadby to a nephew , we learn that William was
indeed the oldest .
He then mentions the next siblings as -

James Born 2 Jul ,1798 , Bapt 27 Jul 1798 at Devizes St Mary.
As yet , we have no clues to the maiden surname of Mercy .
By 1853, only George , Mary and James were still alive .
We have no proof of her husband (George�s) parentage , but a reasonable guess
would be father = William (first-born son�s name) , mother = Ann (first
daughter). Phillip could well be George�s grandfather as there have been a
succession of Phillip Cadbys that as yet remain unconnected .
GEORGE 000 appears to have married again as a widower on 14 Nov 1813 to
Mary Bradford (a widow) at Aston Juxta.George could not write.
George of Livery St,B/ham,was buried on 8 July 1821 aged 68 at St Marys,B/ham.
Mary (widow)of Livery St,B/ham, was buried on 2 Sep 1821 aged 46.

Wil 207 Benjamin ended up in
Tasmania , alternating surnames between Cadby & Johnson .
George said that William died "abroad" in 1809 , and this was
probably due to him being in a military unit , like George was.
William's widow probably remarried a JOHNSON .She was living 100 miles from
Birmingham in 1853.(Letter from Mary Marshall).
Her 2nd husband may well have been a military man as well .
Benjamin married Mary Ann Kelmsley Flaerty 23 Aug 1837 in Launceston.
They had 8 children , 4 living to adulthood.

369. BENJAMIN CADBY was indicted for stealing, on the 10th of February, one coat,
value 5 l., the property of Sir John Graham Moore, Knight, Commander of the Bath,
in his dwelling-house.
JAMES GOODALL. I am coachman to Sir John Graham Moore, who is Knight Commander
of the Bath, and is one of the Lords of the Admiralty; he lives in the Admiralty-yard.
The great coat hung across a chair in the servants' hall; I left the hall about two
minutes, returned, and missed it; the door being left open, I thought somebody had
been down - I saw a person run out of the yard, I pursued, but lost him for sometime.
I saw the prisoner in Scotland-yard with the coat; I attempted to stop him, and he
dropped it - he was afterwards stopped.
JOHN BROWN. I was in Scotland-yard, and saw the prisoner running with the coat;
he dropped it, and was immediately stopped.
JAMES READ. I am a labourer. I stopped the prisoner.

PHILLIP - married Alice BAYLIS at Edgbaston 13 Oct 1806 , and died 4 Apr 1836 in Birmingham .

Alice had been dead "several years" by 1853 .

said to be living at 170 Mill St , Liverpool (in 1853).
This marriage took place on 18 Sep 1826 at St Marys,Handsworth,Stafford.

JOHN WESLEY - married ? and moved to America before 1821 . His address at
Wil 355 this time was "Connandaigna ,County of Ontario,State of New York .
He served in both the army and navy , including service in the West Indies .
He was in the 90th Regiment of infantry achieving rank of sergeant.
At some point in USA, he deserted from the army,and the family in
England never heard from him again. (James' letter,1853)
He must have left England before 1810 , because he didn't know his youngest
brother (James) very well.Sometime after 1821 , John left his family and was
never seen again . He may have drowned on a trip back to England.
A letter to John from George was returned to George in 1830.
John W. was apparently born 22 Nov 1786 .
He married Minerva Phelps ADAMS (B 1799 , Vermont) in the USA.

He served in 71st Regiment of Foot,3rd Garrison Company,14th Regiment of foot,
Royal NSW Veteran Corps.Discharged WO 97/1146/60 & WO 97/1203/41.
He married 3 times and died in Birmingham on 20 Dec 1864 .
FIRST MARRIAGE -
was to Catherine McFarlane in Gorbals,Glasgow , 1 Oct 1814 .
Catherine (nee McFarlane) had been previously married (9 Dec 1808)
to Robert McFarlane and had a son , Robert , bapt 18 Nov 1810.
She was a widow , and it would be a fair bet that her husband was
a military man who had served with George Cadby .
They had 4 children -
James - bapt 11 Jun 1815 at Chatham , Kent .
Mary - bapt ?
Elizabeth - bapt 14 May 1819 at St Olave,Bermonsey,London.
Ann - bapt ?
The family travelled to Sydney , NSW , Australia aboard the
"John Barry" , which sailed from Portsmouth on 8 Mar 1826 ,
arriving 8 July , 1826 .
The children's marriages are as follows -
James married Sarah O'Toole on 12 Oct 1846 at Saint Philip ,
Sydney and had 8 children.

Mary married Joseph Smith 7 Jul 1835 . It would seem that they
had 2 children :
George , born 19 Mar 1836 , Bapt 24 Mar 1836,C of E.
Mary Ann , born 24 Mar 1837 , Bapt 21 May 1837 , C of E.
She probably died 23 Sep 1837 , aged 6 mths.
Mary , the mother , probably died 13 Jul 1837,aged 20.
Little else is known of this branch.
Elizabeth married William Richard Jackson 9 Apr 1838 and had 10 children.

SECOND MARRIAGE -
was to Charlotte Ann Copus ( a widow ) on 22 Jun 1835 at Sydney
Presbyterian Church . They left to travel to England soon after ,
but Charlotte died on arrival in England , and George was forced
to stay in England and sell his Australian property to pay for
his voyage . He never returned to Australia .
THIRD MARRIAGE -
was to Sarah LEES on 4 April , 1836 , at St. George , Birmingham .
They had 3 children :

George died in 1864 .
Mary Ann was still single in 1861 but married John Charles WILLIAMS,
an engine fitter,on 9 Aug 1863 at St Lukes,B/ham.Witnesses to the
marriage were her brother John Edward Cadby and his wife Emma Maria .
By 1881 , they had 6 children and were living at
6 Court No.3 Ryland Rd,B/ham.

In the 1881 census , the 5 children appear with the surname SIMMONS.
They appear to have married as CADBY , as there are 5 suitable entries .
SARAH - Not mentioned by George - probably died young .John Wesley asked (1821) if she
was alive or dead.
MARY - Married Edward MARSHALL 23 Oct 1815 at St Martin , B/ham.
Wil 038 "has no children" according to George , 1853 .
They lived at No. 9 The Court , Little Hampton St , B/ham from
1836 - 1853 , and probably longer.
They had a daughter , Charlotte , who was 11 mths old at the 1841
Census . She must have died young .
In 1851 , a niece - Charlotte HYDE,aged 21, was living with them.
In a letter (1853) Mary mentions having a few possessions of John Wesley's.
She probably was the 'keeper' of important family 'things'.
15/7/1862 - From one of the local papers (not named)- Death notice
MARSHALL 10i age 67. Mary beloved wife of Edward & only sister of James Cadby
of Hampton St.
JAMES - wrote in a letter (1853) that he "was a soldier for 29 1/4 years,now discharged".
He was in the 9th Regiment of foot ,achieving rank of drum Major in the East Indies
and was discharged in 1842,returning to Birmingham.
James married Anne Wingfield in the Garrison Church, St Georges, Grenada on
4th November 1824. James was a corporal (bachelor) and Anne was a spinster.
James married for the 2nd time on Nov 28,1842 to the widow Oliff Hallsworth
(daughter of Richard DEAKIN)at Parish of Handsworth in Staffordshire.
Witnesses included Edward & Mary Marshall.
Neither of them could sign the marriage certificate.
Oliff died on 27 Sep, 1860 at 6 Court, Hampton St, Birmingham St George, Warwickshire.
Cause of death was "consumption" as certified by her husband, James.

Ellen were living with a widowed Mrs Mary Foden (his M-in-law)at
1 House ,25 Ct, Hatchett St ,B/ham.Her father was William.

In the 1861 census, James (aka Charles James!) was living at
85 Tower St,Aston with the 3 children listed above, his wife

When Walter died in 1866, the family lived at 85 Tower St.
James died on 19 September,1870, aged 43.
His address was Watt St, Handsworth, and he was employed as a
time keeper at an iron works. (From D/C - thanks Mave!)

Mary Ann - "is blind , and in the blind school" (1853)
She turned 21 on 7 Apr 1853 ,so born 1832 .
James Snr (354) wrote a letter to his niece in USA in 1853.
His second wife goes by the name of "Abie" (Abbey ?).
His address at that time was No. 6 Court,Hampton St,B/ham.In the 1851 census,
James wasn't there BUT it was occupied by a William (006) and Anna whose
connection to the family is as yet unknown.
When Mary Marshall died in 1862, James was living somewhere in Hampton St.

WILLIAM - in the year 1714, a collection of curiosities turned up, still more to the purpose. Near the ruins
of an old house on the Green, one William Cadby, a gardener, dug up 21 pocket
household-deities, such as were called by the Romans, Penates. They had been carefully interred
in a large urn, holding 6 English gallons, and the urn had been inclosed in Roman tiles, secured
with Roman cement. ***This happened in Devizes.***
