FACTS ABOUT MALCOLM NICHOLSON (NICOLSON)

Malcolm (born circa 1806 died 3 Nov 1886 Parents unknown) married Mary Ann Harding (born circa 1809 died 1 Aug 1875) at Glasgow (1829). They came to Australia (arriving 8/10/1837) on the ship “Lord William Bentinck” with 3 children, names not recorded. A notice in the SMH named Malcolm only. One of these children, Donald, died 30th October, 1837 aged 3 years 2 months at Pitnacree, near Maitland. (They may have met up at Pitnacree later in 1837 with a Finlay Nicholson, whose relationship to them is not known. They had three other children born in Australia - Thomas John; Mary Jane; and Robert James. They were on the Hunter River area for some 10 years or more, then they settled at Cundletown, near Taree. They had 2 farms there, one of which was called KILMUIR FARM. In 1857 or so, Malcolm sponsored (a different) Finlay Nicholson to Australia. This FINLAY was 38 in 1858 and was a native of the Isle of Skye. He stated that Malcolm was his cousin. This FINLAY gave his parents as Malcolm and Sarah Nicholson who were still living at Skye (1858). Both Malcolm and Mary Ann’s death certificates state that they had 5 children (not 6). It is possible that they brought an orphaned child relative with them. (Possibly a HARDING) There are too many co-incidences for the NICHOLSONS mentioned here not to be related: * a farm named KILMUIR (probably after the town on Skye) * one Finlay stating he was a cousin of Malcolm (1858) and being the son of a Malcolm * the other Finlay turning up a Pitnacree, shortly after Malcolm did xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Malcolm Nicholson was born ca 1806 ,if the age on his D/C was correct . He was certainly born before 1808 , as he married in 1829. A Malcolm was born 19 Jun 1805 at Portree,Skye,Inverness to parents Donald Nicolson & Margaret McDonald . The only other birth listed for this couple was Donald baptised 30 Mar 1795. Donald & Margaret must have married ca 1790-4 , but no marriage could be found on the Scottish OPR. [Note - 15 Malcolms married in Inverness,6 in Portree !] Malcolm paid an immigration deposit for his cousin Finlay Nicholson , 20 years after arriving in NSW,so letters must have been exchanged back & forth between here & Scotland . FINLAY 's shipping details have him born ca 1820 to parents Malcolm Nicholson (uncle of our Malcolm) and Sarah ..... , and state that these parents are still alive on Skye in 1858. There is no record of him marrying here as "Finlay" ,but the family here had a habit of using second names or even "familiar" names instead of real names so he may have a different "proper" name !! Finlay paid 2 separate deposits for an Ann McDonald ,born ca 1828,to come to NSW, and she came on the Telegraph in 1860. She was living at Duirnish,Kilmonie,Isle of Skye. She may have been his fiancee or common-law wife. Finlay also paid for an Alexander McLeod ,born ca 1828,who arrived 1859 on the Parsee , relationship not known. Finlay died on 16 Feb 1896 in Liverpool Asylum aged 77 . His parents were given as Malcolm N. & Sarah McMillan. Details of marriage & children were "not known". The OPR has ZERO births in the name "Finlay" !! A JOHN Nicolson was born 4 Jun 1820 at Portree to parents Malcolm N. & Sarah McDougald. Who knows , this might even be the same bloke. The marriage of these parents could not be found. A Malcolm N. married MARY McMillan on 14 Jan 1826 on Sleat. This could be the correct parents for Finlay , except that he was born at least 6 years earlier . Did wife die , Malcolm remarry ?? Mary Ann HARDING was the daughter of Robert H. and Mary McDonald , born ca 1806 , according to her death cert. A Robert Harding married a Christian McDonald on 3 Mar 1805 at Glenorchy & Inishail,Argyllshire . Both born < 1785 . They had a daughter Mary Harding baptised 30 Nov 1806,same parish. IF this "Christian" went by the name of "Mary" ,we have the correct people. Possible Robert : Robert Hardin bapt 4 Feb 1781 at Inveresk with Musselburgh,Midlothian, to parents James Hardin & Mary White. Marriage NOT located. Possible Christian : Christian McDonald bapt 26 Dec 1782 at Kilbrandon/Kilchattan to parents Charles McDonald & Catherine McDougall (who married on 3 Apr 1762 in the same parish). Another possible : A Robert Harding (ours / son of ours ??) married Janet Campbell on 16 Dec 1822 at Glenorchy and had a son William bapt 26 Mar 1830 . I'm tipping that this is the same Robert and that for whatever reason , his son William came to NSW with Malcolm & Mary Ann, making the third child mentioned in the shipping arrivals . This would explain the "mysterious Harding cousin" who was discovered by accident during a cricket match ! Lots of possibles, many questions, NO answers !! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx NICHOLSON on Skye in the 1841 census Please note: This is not my work. It is only included here for research purposes, by which I hope to figure out who IS part of Malcolm's family and who isn't!
