Biographies

Bennett
James Bennett came to NSW on the Woodbridge in 1842.
In 1846, he was working for John O'Ryan at Cassilis when he
applied for his 5 children to come to NSW.
The application was 46/229 ** Which was wrapped inside 47/317**.
The children were in the care of Rev Thomas Blake at Roscrea, and
their names were William(15), Oliver(13), John(11), James(9) and Mary(7),
all of whom were said to have been baptised at Camlin.

matches Daniel and Mary BOURKE on board the "Abyssinian" 1859.
They may be part of my line. I'm still unsure. I am descended from Thomas Bourke/Burke who was
married in 1867 in Aus. I know he had a brother Richard who's parents are listed as Patrick and Mary
(on his death record) and who was aged 80 in 1919. Apart from that the family stories say they were from Tipperary.
I am narrowing them down but according to your list the possibilities appear to include Thomas Bourke 1855
(aged 25) per "Lord Hungerford", Thomas Burke 1856 (age 14) per "Ben Nevis". If he is the latter then Patrick
(his father on board) appears to be brother to Daniel 1859 per "Abyssinian" (Patrick paid the passage for Daniel).
I would like to be put down as a researcher for Daniel, Patrick and the two mentioned Thomas'.

In March 1821 John was convicted at the Tipperary Court, for Highway Robbery . He was sentenced on 13 June 1821
to Life in Australia and on the 16 June 1821 sailed aboard the 'John Barry (2)' which arrived in Sydney on 7 November 1821.

In 1823 he was assigned to Mr. G.M. Woodhouse, a farmer at Appin. As John had served several years with good conduct
an application for his family to be sent to Australia under the Government Sponsored Family Reunion was made on

He had married Mary LANDERS (bc 1793 Duallagh? Tipp) on 26 Nov 1811 at Newtown Tipperary and their children were:

(the children of William & Ellen would arrived Michael in 1857 aboard the 'Alfred', Cornelius in 1856 aboard the 'Alfred',
Mary unknown year and Ellen in 1862 aboard the 'Lady Milton'
2) Edward BOHEN bc 1816 Kilmoyer Tipp married East Maitland NSW to Phildelphia STACE
3) Mary BOHEN bc 1819 Kilmoyer Tipp married 1834 Newcastle NSW John BOHAN/BOWEN (no relation)
Mary (nee LANDERS) BOHEN with only Edward and Mary jnr arrived on 26/4/1826 aboard the 'Thames' and immediately
applied to have her husband assigned to her (NSW Archive Office - Colonial Secretary Papers Petition No.29/3437).
The family were residing in Pitt Street, Sydney during the 1828 Census.
John and Mary would have three more daughters while living in Sydney, Margaret b/d 1827, Jeanna b/d1828 and
Johannah b April 1828 who later married William RENNIX
The family moved to the Raymond Terrace area about 1830 and assumed the surname of BOWEN by the 1841 Census.
Mary (nee LANDERS) BOWEN died on 8 September 1850 at Raymond Terrace, as women before her time, a female
Irishwomen, wife of a former convict, she left a will (NSW Probate Series 1 No. 3749) leaving an estate worth 500 pounds
to her husband John. He died on 23 January 1858 at Raymond Terrace.
Both are buried in the Pioneer cemetery at Raymond Terrace.

William Carroll (aged 21) and Edmond Carroll (aged 14) who were living at
Coolkip,Moycarky near Littleton, were paid for by Roger Ryan
of North Richmond on 2 Nov 1857. They came to NSW on the Fitz James.

Darcy
Michael Darcy was born in 1836 to Daniel Darcy and Mary Gully at Cullinagh Ballina
North Tipperary. I have searched for quite a long time and have not been
able to identify his arrival in Victoria, but have discovered he had two
brothers John and Daniel who also came to Victoria. The earliest recordings
I have of John is around 1868 in Castlemaine and Michael was married there
in 1873 to Teresa Eckhardt. I have also discovered that he had 3 sisters
Sarah, Mary and Margaret who came to Victoria at some time and settled in
Williamstown. Daniel arrived in 1901 and died in 1903. He was 45 years at
the time of his death.
Michael is buried in Bendigo cemetery and was interred there in November 1919.

Michael Darcy married Theresa Eckhardt, Castlemaine 1873 Reg: 337.
Michael Darcy was from Cullinagh Ballina North Tipperary. Date of arrival
unknown. Parents Daniel Darcy and Mary Gully.

John Deegan who apparently came out on the Elizabeth in 1841, applied in 1850
by letter 50/825 on the 11 Apr 1850 (in box 9/6194) to have his daughter Ellen,

Mary O'Kenden (who apparently came to NSW in 1838 on the "Strathfield Lea")
arrived as Mary DORAN -"I was then a widow and could not pay for his passage".
She married Joseph O'Kenden in NSW and is doing business as an agriculturalist
in Bungonia.
She made an application numbered 47/278 for her son, Timothy Doran aged 12
to come to NSW. Timothy had been in the care of her mother, Mrs Whelan,
a widow living in Thurles.

John English and Charlotte Eliza Galpin

In 1856 Honora Brown aged 43 of Thomastown, the wife of John Brown of Yass arrived on the ship Commodore
Perry with her daughter Johanna aged 21 and her son John aged 20. Her parents were John and Anne who by this
time were both dead.

On the shipping list John English gave his home address in Ireland as Golden IDJ. On the same ship were Mary English
aged thirty-six and Bridget English aged thirty-five, also of Golden and also paid for by John Brown of Yass.

In the Yass Courier on the 5th of February 1897 there is a death notice, 'English, Mary. Native of Tipperary Ireland
died at Yass on 2.2.1897 aged 87 years. Came to the colony in 1859, Aunt of John English of Belowrie near Yass,
Mrs James Dwyer of Spring Creek, Yass River, John Brown (I presume this is John Brown senior and Honora
Brown�s son), Yass and Mr W English of Bango.' This is the aunt Mary who came with John to Yass and Bridget was
her sister. When young John English was going to school in Yass in 1879 I surmise that this is the Mary he was staying with.

In 1866 William English aged fifteen and Edmund English aged eighteen of Thomastown, Golden, Cashel arrived in Sydney
on the ship Racehorse, paid for by John English of Yass. They gave as their parents Simon and Honora English and their
hometown as Thomastown, Golden, Cashel.

Thomastown is a townland that is not on most maps but is on the main road between Golden and Kilfeakle, now the N74.
The N74 goes from Tipperary town northeast to Cashel then north to Thurles. A townland is a small area of a few farms.
It was the smallest administrative area but usually served as a postal address, in this case John English, Thomastown via
Golden via Cashel, County Tipperary. Thomastown is in the parish of Golden, which is in the diocese of Cashel and Emly.
There was a Blessed Sacrament church built in Golden in 1804. I have not yet found a church listed for Thomastown.

On the 28th of February 1865 John English, Bachelor, Labourer of Bathurst, married Charlotte Eliza Childs, Dressmaker
also of Bathurst, Widow. Rev James Matthew Laughton, minister of the Church of Scotland, married them in St Stephen's
Manse, Bathurst. There is a story in the family that at the time of their marriage John was not a practising Catholic. Later
when the first child was born John wanted her christened in the Catholic Church. At this time Charlotte became a Catholic
and they became fervent Catholics thereafter.

Charlotte Eliza Childs was born Charlotte Eliza Galpin on the 14th of August 1831, in Dorchester, Dorset, England.
Her parents were married on January 1st 1827 and were William Galpin and Hanna Dixon daughter of Thomas Dixon.
Her mother�s name is not recorded on the family tree. Charlotte arrived in Australia about 1862.

My father, Perce English used say that his grandmother Charlotte had been presented at court. He also had a story that
on one occasion in her later life some English ladies visited Yass and asked after her but she did not make herself known
to them.

There is a book, The Family of Galpin of Staffordshire and Dorset written by George Luck Galpin and published in
London at the Chiswick Press in 1926. It has a family tree that has Charlotte on it and claims to trace the Galpins of
Stafford and Dorset back to Johannes De Montgalpen of Evereux who came across to England with William the
Conqueror in 1066. �Galopin� is a Scots word for galloper or gallop, derived from French, for an errand boy, a page
or a kitchen boy so the surname might also be derived from that. One dictionary of English surnames gives only this
second derivation and ignores the claim to Norman origin.

The book, which I copied from one in the Bodlean Library in Oxford, also has a short chapter on Thomas Dixon Galpin,
Charlotte's brother born three years before her. He became a publisher in London under the imprint Cassell, Petter and
Galpin & Co. He is listed in the census of 1881 as a publisher, married to Emma and living at Putney Heath, Bristol House.
They had eleven children by then (the Galpin book says they had thirteen eventually) and twelve servants. Beside Charlotte
and Thomas there were another brother and three sisters survived infancy. Their father was the first chairman of the Wilts
and Dorset Bank. Thomas was educated by the Reverend William Barnes 'the Dorset poet' and at the Owenite Settlement
at Harmony Hall near Stockbridge. Their father became a White Quaker and for a time the family lived in Ireland. Thomas
also attended another school for boys and girls founded by Robert Owen the social reformer. There is no evidence of what
education Charlotte had.

When Charlotte married John English she had been twice widowed. Her first husband's surname was Jordan and they had
a son named Edward Dixon (usually called Dixon) and two daughters Laura and Jessie. Charlotte's second husband was
named Childs. There is no record of any children by this second marriage. John and Charlotte had six children Charlotte
Amy (called Amy by the family) born 1864, Honora born 1865, John born 1867, Thomas Dixon born 1870, William
Simon born 1872, and Hannah Mary born 1878.

John English kept a small black notebook in the 1870s and beyond. In it are details of horses and when they foaled, grass
seed bought, recipes for mixtures to treat animal complaints, days on which employees on the farm began work, records
of money paid etc. He keeps strict accounts of money spent on household and farm goods. On October 16th 1875 he
notes that Dixon's mare foaled. In 1878 he notes the brands for the children, 1 for Jessie, 2 for Laura, 3 for Amy, 4 for
Nora, 5 for Johnny and 6 for Hannah. On the 22nd November 1879 he spent six shillings and sixpence for Laura's birthday.
In 1882 he notes that Dixon commenced work for him on Monday 16th of April for one pound a week. He employs Dixon
several times over the years. It is clear from entries that he called Charlotte Lottie. Later when his son Tom had married
Mary McInerney and they had their first child she too was called Charlotte, shortened to Lottie.

On September 13th, 1879 John notes, �My selection inspected by Mr Inspector Page. Improvements valued at 156 pounds
and fifteen shillings.� On August 13th 1883 John Gildea commenced shepherding at the rate of thirty pounds a year. There
are records of money given to the Catholic church and of John collecting money from others on behalf of the church, for
Easter Dues, for example. Among the papers there is also a list, �Funds collected by Mrs English for piano for the �School
of Arts� Marengo.� She collected twenty-eight pounds and sixpence of which ten shillings was then spent on tuning the piano
(I imagine it had arrived by horse and wagon and needed tuning). Many of the Murringo names that were still around in the
1950s, O�Dea, O�Connor, Parkman, Lenane, Kearins, Cusack, Crowe, Dwyer, Kennemore, Chew, Harcombe and
Garry are on the list.

John�s sister Mary remained in Tipperary and seems to have cared for her parents, Simon and Honora. Four letters from
her survive from 1878 and 1879, three to John and one to Charlotte. From them, from letters from young John (more below)
and from John senior�s notebooks it is clear that Charlotte�s elder children grew up with the English children and were
regarded by all as brothers and sisters. It seems too that his brother William was living a wild life in the colonies, and neither
Ned nor he was very much into hard work, and that John Brown treated Norry cruelly. From one of her letters and a look
at the shipping records it is evident that in 1860 John paid the passage to Australia of Matthew Dwyer aged thirty. Dwyer�s
address was also Thomastown.

In 1861 two men from Clonoulty, Roger Dwyer and John Coman had their passages paid by John English. Whether it is
our John English is not clear. There was another John English, born in Clonoulty about 1803 that died in Boorowa in 1868.
His son, also John came to Australia in 1855 and was married in Boorowa in 1868. One of these seems more likely to be
paying for folk from Clonoulty.

After their marriage at Bathurst John and Charlotte lived for a time at Good Hope near Yass then, for the rest of their lives,
they had a selection at Balowra. In The Southern Argus, Goulburn NSW, Thursday May 23, 1878 there is an eighty by
six-and-a-half centimeter column headed, �Complimentary Dinner To Mr John English�. It is an account of a dinner given
at Mr Cummins� Royal Hotel, Yass by the Yass Freeholders and Free Selectors� Association to their late honorary
treasurer, Mr John English. There were twenty-seven in attendance, all men, and the Yass Oddfellows� Band, which played
appropriate airs throughout the evening. There was much applause both when Mr English spoke and was spoken about.
The occasion is John�s leaving Yass to take up land on Balowra. Speakers praise John�s hard work and unselfishness
and his keen advocacy of just land laws in NSW. Coincidentally there is a short note in the same paper about the new
shrine in honour of the Virgin Mary that the Sisters of Mercy are just erecting in the St Augustine�s Catholic church. This
shrine is mentioned in one of John Junior�s letters to his father.

Balowra is a few kilometers from the village of Murringo, which is on the southwest slopes of NSW about half way
between Young and Boorowa. Irish people from southern Tipperary and Clare settled the area from Young to Boorowa
to Yass to Galong in the middle and late nineteenth century. The Irish had been encouraged to go there by the Deputy
Surveyor of NSW the former convict James Meehan. One of the best known of the Irish squatters was Ned Ryan a
former convict who settled at Galong (his home later became the Redemptorist monastery). There was a gold rush at
nearby Lambing Flat on the Burrangong Creek in 1860. The town Lambing Flat that grew up on the goldfields was the
site of anti Chinese riots and was the haunt of several bushrangers. To restore its dignity it was later renamed �Young�.

�Murringo� seems to be the earliest spelling of the village that the Englishes settled near though it was also spelt Marengo
(probably confused with Napoleon�s victory -the original European landholding in the area was called �Marengo Station�)
and in a variety of other ways as well. These days it is �Murringo�. �Balowra� is an anglicized version of the Aboriginal
�Balowrie�, which is an alternate name for a range of hills, also called �Dannanbilla�, near the old English�s farm. The
whole area was originally the country of the Wuradjuri people before European occupation. It is good undulating
country suitable for grain crops and grazing.

Murringo was laid out as a village in the 1840s, much earlier than Young, but it did not thrive, though as late as the
1950s it still had two small shops. In 1900 it had Richens� blacksmith, a police barracks and a local branch of the
Labor party. Although a low stone hotel was built it was never used as a hotel. It still has a state school. The Catholic
convent school, run by the Sisters of Mercy closed many years ago. There are small Catholic and Anglican churches
where services are still held occasionally. The Anglican church, Christ Church, opened in 1866 and Sacred Heart
Catholic church in the 1870s. In the Catholic church there are stained glass windows in memory of both John and
Charlotte, and of Thomas English their son who farmed �Balowra East� until his death in 1939.

Charlotte�s three children with Mr Jordan were Laura, Edward Dixon and Jessie. Laura married a Mr Commerford
and had four children, Mary who married Someone Wall, Katie, Eileen who married Someone Lance and Thomas.
Dixon did not marry as far as I can tell. Jessie married Someone Simmons and had a daughter Rose who married
Harry Madden.

Charlotte and John�s children were Amy, Nora, John, Thomas, William and Hannah.

Amy married John Norton and had twelve children, Andrew, Thomas, William, Frank, John, Patrick, Charlotte
(married McDonald), Nora (married Gordon), Bridget (married Reynolds), Amy (married W. White), Hannah
(married Chesser) and Mary (married C.Byrne).

Nora married Edward Dunley. She and Edward are buried beside her parents in Murringo cemetery. They had two
children, Eric who married Lorna Rule, and Mary who did not marry.

John was killed off a horse aged fifteen. There is a story that he and a mate were racing each other when the accident
happened.

Thomas (9.3.1870 - 6.11.1939) married Mary Josephine McInerney (26.1.1876 - 26.4.1950) and they had Charlotte
Mary, John Thomas, Thomas Dixon, Margaret Ella, William Simon, Percival Joseph, Daryl, and James Desmond.
Charlotte married Michael (Toohey) Crowe and they had Edna and Marie. This marriage failed and Charlotte lived
as Mary Crowe in Sydney with a man called Lonie. They had three boys. Frank is the only one whose name I know.
He was an officer in the RAAF navigating Hercules planes with 2 Squadron in Vietnam. Frank was born on the
27 September 1931 and died in 1995. Lottie is buried as Charlotte Mary Crowe in the Catholic portion of Botany
cemetery in Sydney. John was always called Jack (though my father usually called him Tiger and we called him Uncle Tiger)
and he married Helena Kearins and they had Neville, Zoe, Barry and Lorna. Jack and Lena are buried in the Catholic
section of Rookwood cemetery. Thomas married Hilary Byrne and they had one daughter Jeanette who died of a brain
tumor just before her twenty-first birthday in 1952. Tom died aged thirty-nine and is also buried in Botany cemetery.
At the time of his death he was secretary of the NSW Country Rugby League. Both his and Lottie�s graves are easy
to find. The family called Margaret �Ella�. She married Bill Wiggins and they had three sons Frank, Max and John.
She died in 1990 and her ashes are buried in the family grave at Murringo with her parents. William Simon married
Katherine Maisie Hall and they had one son, John. Bill is buried in Rookwood. Perce married Margaret Elizabeth
Carmody and they had Graham, Brian and Mary. Perce and Peg are buried in Murringo cemetery. Daryl died in a
measles outbreak aged three months. James married Rachel Craker and they settled in Adelaide. They had Michael,
Elizabeth, Christopher, Frances and Nicola. James is buried in Adelaide.

William married Mary Weeks and they settled in the Bland district of NSW around West Wyalong and Barmedman.
They had William who married Ellen Thompson, Thomas, John who did not marry, Percival who married Laura Bodell,
and Dorothy who married first M. Edwards then Mark Monogue.

Hannah married J. Harcombe. Their older daughters Louise and Mary became Mercy Sisters at North Sydney, John
married and his son John became a priest, James and Albert became Marist priests, and Clair married Harry Walters
and they had a daughter Mary.

The Englishes of Balowra were active members of the Catholic church in Murringo. Charlotte�s father was a Quaker and
her brother Thomas married a Quaker, Emma Pare. Whether Charlotte was a Quaker when she met John, indeed if she
was ever a Quaker, I do not know nor do I know when she became a Catholic. In 1881 Mrs John English donated ten
pounds for work on the Marengo Catholic church and Patrick O�Connor signed the receipt. In April1903 John bought a
ticket in the �Juventa Raffle� in aid of the �Christian Brothers Novitiate and Training College, Marino, Dublin, Ireland�.
Brother J.R.Hughes wrote on the back of the ticket, �Remember me kindly to my dear Marengo friends. God bless them
all.� The ticket cost one guinea. There is a piece of paper among John�s things with this written neatly in pencil, �Every man
is bound to do what he can to elevate his social state and to secure his independence. For this purpose he must spare from
his means in order to be independent in his condition. Industry enables men to earn their living. It should also enable them
to learn to live. Independence can be established only by the exercise of forethought, prudence, frugality and self-denial.
To be just as well as generous men must deny themselves. The essence of generosity is self sacrifice.�

Charlotte died at Balowra on August 12, 1902. A report of her death in the Yass Courier on the 15th says she died of a
lingering illness and had been an invalid. It also notes that she was related to Mr William English of Wongiella and Mr John
Flanagan. On her death certificate the cause of death is given as �Acute Bronchitis�. John died on June 2nd 1906 of a
cerebral haemorrhage. Mrs Buttie Patterson, then aged over ninety told me in 1985 that as a small girl she could remember
going to Balowra and seeing old John English laid out in his coffin. There was a bowl of salt sitting on his stomach.
I don�t know if this custom has some practical use or if it is something from Irish folklore. John and Charlotte are buried
together under a tall dark granite monument in Murringo cemetery.

This material depends firstly on the death and birth certificate searches done by Margaret English in the early 1980s,
and on her memory. She lived in Young almost all her life and often had bits of information and stories that she eventually
started linking together. She was a keeper of the stories. Her particular interest was the Carmody and Woodbridge families
(her parents and their ancestors). Perce English, her husband knew a lot of the stories too but was more reticent about
relating or recording them.

About 1958 the Commercial Bank in Young asked Perce English if he was related to the late John English of Marengo.
As a result of his positive response the bank gave him an old tin hat box that contained assorted papers of John English�s
that had been in a room at the bank since John�s death in 1906. This material included cuttings from old newspapers,
notebooks, John and Charlotte�s wedding certificate and the letters from John Junior, John�s sister Mary, and Charlotte�s
brother Thomas Dixon Galpin.

I am researching the arrival re Thomas FANNING/FINNING etc. He married Jane O'BRIEN at St. Francis RC Melbourne 27th May 1853.
My Thomas FANNING'S death certificate gives his parents names as Dominick Fanning & Mary Martin.
Family sources give his birthplace as Tipperary.

Fogarty
I am a descendant of convict Michael Fogarty born Parish Burgess
Co. Tipperary in 1799. Michael was transported for coining in 1828
and settled in the Boorowa District NSW. Michael left a wife and
4 children behind, he married in Australia to a Margaret Spencer
also from Tipperary. We have not been able to find any information
on his Irish family except for the birth registration of 2 of his
children in Parish Killbane in 1813. Michael applied to have his
4 children join him in Australia in 1836, we don't know if they
made it. I have many relatives living in Newcastle (I was born there).

James Fogarty (aged 19) of Galbooley,Moycarkey,Thurles was
sponsored out by Honora RYAN of West Maitland, who also paid
for her brother Thomas Ryan to come out, on 20 Nov 1857.

Bridget Gorman emigrated on the Castilian in 1858, aged 21, Native of Inch
Co. Tipperary. Parents Patrick & Johanna. Sister = Ann(e)

Bridget married Thomas John Hunter, a Scot, in 1864 at Newcastle, NSW.

She had 6 children, and died at Sand Hills, Newcastle on 3 March 1874.

Heffernan
John Heffernan (who apparently came out per the Diamond in 1841)
is now with Dr Barker at Mt Alexander. He made an application
numbered 49/1158 in box 9/6192 for Ellen Heffernan (aged 16)
and Sarah Heffernan (aged 13) who had been left in the care of William
Heffernan at Tipperary Town. These daughters "were left to care for
their brother, who had lost his sight".

Hogan
3757 Daniel Hogan died at Oakhampton, (near West Maitland)
on 24th November 1892 aged 80 years.
3838 Nancy, correct name Ann, Hogan died at Oakhampton
on 20th May 1898 aged 79 years.

The children of the above. On Daniel�s death cert., only two female
children were living a Mary aged 41 and a Bridget aged 37.
Two males dead and one female who must have been Ann
aboard "Una".
Mary did not marry and is buried in the same grave and died
20th October 1919 aged 70 years.
Bridget married a James O�Brien and is also buried in the grave
and the headstone inscription gives the following, Bridget O�Brien
died 20th June 1911 aged 56 years.
Grave is in R.C Maitland Cemetery at Rutherford.

Died Tibooburra 22nd October 1894 aged 50yrs .
In deposit journal you will find written "Ballyrickard" for residence.

It is possible that the� Michael Kelly� named here was my great granduncle as his parents
listed above (James and Winifred), if I�m not mistaken are my greatgreat grandfather/mother.
I was born outside the town of Borrisokane, County Tipperary in the townsland of �Bawnmore�
in 1959. I have never researched my anscestors to any great degree, so, I would love to find
any further information in relation to Michael.

Just to fill you in a little, I have a brother named Michael and had a uncle named Michael,
who unfortunately died at a young age (I think he was only 22). He was drowned in a bog hole/ditch
while the family was cutting turf near our family home in Bawnmore. He seemingly was artistic� like myself�
and used to do some landscape painting. I have an interest in oil painting and I work in graphic design,
which is broadly commercial art.

The �Kellys� of Bawnmore were a focal point of the townsland in the 1930�s and had their very
own hurling team� which was basically 5 or 6 families. My grandfather (Denis Kelly) was team manager
and trainer and the team had 5 Kelly brothers. My father was goalkeeper and 4 uncles played outfield.
They won the North Tipperary junior hurling championship in 1933 and a plaque commemorates this
achievement at Bawnmore today.

(letter no. 47/15 in box 9/6189 at the Archives,The Rocks,Sydney)
for his child John Londergan aged 9 (baptised at Clonmel) to come to NSW.
He had been left in the care of Mary SMITH at Clonmel.

LOWRY

Here are details of Mary and Bridget Lowry.

Thomas Lowry of Knockanree parish of Boherlahan married Bridget Blake of
Knockanree on 5 February 1821. They had Ned, Margaret, Bridget (1831), Mary
(1834), Charlotte, Catherine and Thomas (not necessarily in that order).
Most were born at Ballatarsne/Betarsna.

I haven't been able to verify when and why Bridget and Mary came to
Australia in the 1850s. Bridget married Emmanuel Webster on 3 March 1859 in
Melbourne. She died 31 July 1918. Mary married Benjamin Selwyn/Selwin 16
November 1859 in Melbourne and died 10 September 1909.

Catherine may have come to Australia in 1854 in the Champion of the Seas.

In Ireland Ned married Bridget Maher 1858. Margaret married Pat McQuire
1860. Ann married Michael Ryan 1862. Catherine married John Ryan 1861.

I have the life stories of Mary and Bridget and their children in Victoria.

O'Kenden

Mary O'Kenden (who apparently came to NSW in 1838 on the "Strathfield Lea")
arrived as Mary DORAN -"I was then a widow and could not pay for his passage".
She married Joseph O'Kenden in NSW and is doing business as an agriculturalist
in Bungonia.
She made an application numbered 47/278 for her son, Timothy Doran aged 12
to come to NSW. Timothy had been in the care of her mother, Mrs Whelan,
a widow living in Thurles.

PHELAN

My Thomas Phelan was in the Rockhampton area of Central Queensland in 1868
as he was an lessee of a hotel there. In 1870 he bought the Commercial Hotel in
Rockhampton for 200 pounds so I am assuming he had money when he arrived in
the colony. The same year he married Catherine McDonald who was from Amagh,
Ireland. He also opened a drapery store in Rockhampton in Alma Street, and after
his death, his daughters ran this store until their deaths in the 1950' and 1960's

paid for by a Bridget RYAN of Irishtown,Enfield whose wish was that if
these girls could not come out, the money should be given to her father

and a Mary GRAINES (aged 26) of Cashel was also paid for, but

SHANAHAN

My info relates to one of my ancestors, Timothy Shanahan,
24, who arrived in 1865 aboard the "Star of Brunswick" whose passage
was paid for by James Shanahan.

Missing from the database entry are the names of his parents.
According to a transcript of his marriage, his father was Timothy, also
a butcher and his mother was Eliza Campbell. I assume both parents
were alive at the time of his emigration because there's nothing in the
transcript to indicate otherwise.

at Elgin, Port Phillip. He said "I brought 4 stepchildren & 2 of my own,
which took all of my money". His application numbered 47/384 is for
William WALL aged 16-17 under the care of Thomas Reidy of
Clonmel. ** Some of the children who came out as SHANLY were
probably baptised as WALL. James is their STEPfather. Box 9/6189.

James was in the care of Bridget Murray (grocer- crossed out) of Roscrea.

the Archives, Globe St, The Rocks,Sydney.

Thomas Tully (who apparently came out on the Forth in 1841 and is now in
the employ of John Brown of Mt Napier as a bullock driver) made an application
numbered 47/82 **which is wrapped inside 47/133** for Andrew Tully
aged 9 yrs 4 mths to come to Victoria. Baptised at Lorrha.
Andrew had been in the care of John Tully at Lorrha.

Jeremiah Wardick (who apparently came out per the Woodbridge in 1842)
made an application for Anne Wardick ,aged 18, baptised at Cullahill, to come
to Australia. It was numbered between 47/317 and 47/384 - I missed it.
