JUNIOR STAMP CLUB ACTIVITIES & IDEAS

This part of the website is devoted to the sharing of ideas that can be used successfully to help young people ( aged say 8 to 18 ) to learn about stamp collecting and philatelic terms .

Many of these ideas have already been used by the people who run the Toronto Junior Stamp Club and the Newlake Stamp Group , both of which are based in Newcastle , Australia .

What do you need to run a junior stamp club ?

You need a wide variety of resources including --

The first few meetings are easy to organise , but what then ?

You need heaps of different things to do to keep the juniors busy and interested . Where do I come up with such ideas , you ask ? Read on ....

IDEAS THAT WORK !

Here are some detailed examples , done by "cut and paste" .

Making your own watermark

(These 4 can be cut up for larger groups) Making your mark -- A watermark ! 1) Take a clean sheet of white paper . 2) Using a PENCIL , write your name or initials in one corner (so youll know which is yours, later). 3) Put your sheet of paper IN WATER for a few seconds . 4) Using 2 hands , lift it out and lay it FLAT on a smooth table-top . 5) Lay a fresh DRY sheet of paper over the wet sheet . 6) Use the smooth flat area at the top of a nail as your pencil . 7) Draw (with the nail) some words , shapes , or symbols by pressing firmly onto the DRY sheet . 8) Now and again , lift the top sheet to check that your writing is coming through . 9) When you have drawn enough , peel away the top dry sheet and put it in the garbage . 10) Use the pegs and string to hang your WET sheet up to dry . About Greek people and stamps

The Greek people call themselves "Hellenes" . They call their country (Greece) "Hellas" . They call their language "Hellenic" . On every stamp from Greece we find ..... which translates into ............................. What money value does each stamp have ? On some stamps , we find , which translates to ...................... These would be low-value stamps . On other stamps , we find which translates to ....................... which is short for drachma . These are mid or high-value stamps . Lets try a few stamp translations for ourselves ! Look at the brown and black stamp that shows several men and has the value "50" . Translate the word , ........................ then use a catalogue to find out when it was issued . The year was ............... Now look at the three stamps that have "floating" people on them . They are all from the same set . The "25" value has . Translated , this means ........................ What is the value of this stamp ? ..................... The "50" value has . Translated , this means ........................ What is the value of this stamp ? ...................... The "400" value has , which translates into ................. What is the value of this stamp ? .........................

Catalogue Hunt

What can we find out about that stamp ? If the stamp is USED , hinge it to this page in the space on the right . Use a world catalogue to help you find out more about this stamp . Which country issued your stamp ? ...................................................... Where is that country located ? The stamp was issued in the year .................... . Its design features ................................................................................... What was the money of that country at that time ? This stamp is a LOW / MEDIUM / HIGH value . (Circle one) Does the stamp have a watermark ? ....................................................... Was the stamp issued alone or as part of a set ? ................................. It was a definitive / commemorative / airmail / coil / booklet / charity / pictorial stamp . xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Helpful hints : A definitive is a small , nearly square stamp for everyday use over a period of years . A commemorative is a large stamp that honours a person or special event . An airmail stamp is used to pay the cost of sending a letter by airmail - may say airmail in its design . Charity stamps have TWO separate money values on them . One of them has a + (plus) beside it . A coil stamp will have two parallel sides without perforations . Booklet stamps have either ONE side , or TWO joined sides without perforations . 1) Try to match the exact picture . 2) Try to match a picture of similar size , shape , type , border , or design , then read the list that tells you what is shown on other stamps of the same set . 3) Try to narrow down the time period by checking when the currency changed or when typical stamp designs changed . 4) If all else fails , look at the special-purpose stamps that are listed at the very END of that countrys listings . (Here you will find postage dues, official stamps , etc.)
