Details include (where applicable) the Christian & Surname Names, County, Union, Barony, Parish, plus Townland and a description of the premises, but does not include the actual area of land involved nor annual rates applied to such land, house, office or bog area, owned or leased. The Tithe Books,unfortunately,only identify the heads of rural households.They give no family details,as they merely list the heads of households,together with the size of their farm,plus their townland location.Their coverage,naturally enough,does not extend into the towns and cities of Ireland,but trade and street directories can make up for this this gap.
Owing to the destruction of many Census Returns of this period, the Tithe Books can provide us with an invaluable insight into rural Ireland before the famine.

Completed between 1848 and 1864,the Grif.Val.was a survey which was carried out to determine the the amount of tax each person should pay towards the support of the poor within their own Poor Law Union. This comprehensive survey recorded every person who held any form of property,be it house,land (including bogs),or office (office in this instance meaning any additional property such as outbuildings,barns etc.).
Generally,the records held in various repositories,such as the National Library of Ireland,include an Index List which contain the information covering both the Grif.Val. & Tithe Applotment, as per the sample below for Co. Longford:-
