    d. before 1296

Adam joined the barons who were rebelling against Henry III and was Governor of Dunster castle. After the rebels were defeated at the battle of Evesham Adam plundered Berkshire and Surrey with his horsemen until surprised by Prince Edward with whom he was involved in personal combat and was wounded. After his defeat he joined the King's service and became his faithful friend. Adam was a supporter of Baliol since he held his lands from that prince or from his friend the Earl of March. Adam died before "King John" resigned the sovereignty of Scotland to King Edward in 1296 as on 3 Sept. Margery was given back the estates after having sworn allegience to Edward.

Adam donated property in Gordon to Melrose Abbey by an undated charter which was confirmed by his son by another undated charter. The first charter mentions "Johnanne filio meo".(1)

"Adam filius Ade de Gordoun" donated property to Kelso Monastery by a charter dated c.1300.(1) He reached an agreement with Kelso about property in the territory of West Gordon by charter dated 1308.(2)

In 1305 he was fined by Edward for his former opposition to his government. Upon William Lamberton, Bishop of St. Andrew's release from prison in 1306 Adam became one of the sureties for his good behavior. In Jan. 1312 he was appointed one of the commissioners by Edward to negociate a peace treaty with Robert the Bruce, but without success. In Apr. 1312 Adam and the Earl of March were sent to England by Baliol's party to try to get some of their grievances redressed. In Nov. he was again appointed by Edward to negociate a peace with the Scottish King. After Baliol's death the next year Adam gave his support to Robert the Bruce and in 1320 he was one of the ambassadors sent to Rome to have Bruce's excommunication removed and to deliver the letter to His Holiness asserting Scotland's independence. The Bruce granted Adam the Lordship of Strathbolgie, Aberdeenshire which had been forfeited by David de Strathbolgie, Earl of Athol. Adam made his home there and gave it the name of Huntly after a village in western Gordon. Sir Adam was killed at the battle of Halidon Hill 12 July 1333.

    m. ELIZABETH KEITH
    d. 14 Sept. 1402

Sir Adam was killed at the battle of Homildon 14 Sept. 1402 along with all of his 100 troops. The story goes that "when the English archers were pouring their volleys with deadly effect on the closely wedged ranks of the Scottish spearmen, who were falling by hundreds, Sir John Swinton, a brave Border knight of gigantic stature, well advanced in years, exclaimed, Why stand we here to be shot like deer and marked down by the enemy? Where is our wonted courage? Are we to be still and have our hands nailed to our lances? Follow me, and let us at least sell our lives as dearly as we can. This gallant proposal won the admiration of Adam de Gordon, whose family were at deadly feud with that of Swinton, and throwing himself from his horse and kneeling down before him, he said, I have not been knighted, and never can I take the honour from the hand of a truer, more loyal, more valiant leader. Grant me the boon I ask, and I unite my forces to yours, that we may live and die together. Swinton cordially complied with Gordons request, and after having hastily performed the ceremony, he tenderly embraced his late foe. The two knights then mounted their horses, and, at the head of a hundred horsemen, charged fiercely on the English host; but, unsupported by their countrymen, the little band, with its gallant leaders, were overpowered and slain."(1)

Sir Adam was succeeded by his only child Elizabeth who married Alexander de Seton and who afterwards was called Lord Gordon and Huntly.
