William was closely related to John of Kittery and may have been his father.

William bought land a little south of the Great Works River in 1690. There was also laid out to William 6 June 1702, land which was granted to his father-in-law Thomas Etherington 15 Dec. 1659.

"In the name of God Amen!

I William Hearl Senr of Berwick in ye County of York & being tho very weak in Body, yet of a Sound & well disposeing Mind, do make and ordain this to be my Last will & testament, hereby Revokeing all former will or wills by me made and ordained

In ye first place I Commend my Soul to God in & thro Jesus Christ (hopeing for the pardon of all my sins in his blood) and my body to be decently buried- And as to such outward estate wch it hath pleased God to give me I Dispose of it in ye following Manner.-

Imprimis I Give and bequeath unto my Son Atherington Herle all my homestead where I now dwell Consisting of housing & Land, upland & meadow, with ye orchard, fences and all ye previledges & appurtenances thereunto belonging, to him & his heires for ever. As also Twenty acres of wood Land with ye appurtenances, Near to Nathaniel Goodwins Land in berwick aforesd, it being my part of Thomas Spencers Hundred acre Lot, to ye sd atherington Herle & his heires for Ever. As also I give unto ye sd atherington Herle all my Live Stock of Cattle sheep Hogs & Horse Kind with all utensils, carts chains axes ploughs sleds yokes & whatsoevere utensils toye sd homestead belongs or appertains (Excepting what I shall give to my beloved wife, hereafter in this Instrument mentioned).

Item I give & bequeath unto my sons Thomas & James Herle a Lot of Land Containing fifty acres Lying in Berwick aforesd near to ?Gillisons place to be Equally Divided between ym to ym and yr Heires for Ever.

Item I give and bequeath to my son John Herle five shillings to be paid him by my Executor.

Item I give and bequeath to my son William Herle twnety shillings, to be paid him in paper Money wthin two year after my decease

Item I give and bequeath to ye Children of my Daughter Mary Hamblen deceasd the sume of twenty shillings in paper Money to be equally divided amongst ym, to be paid wthin two years after my decease.

Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Margaret Lord twenty shillings in paper Money to be paid wthin two years after my decease.

Item I give and bequeath to my grand Daughter Martha Lord one feather bed & bolster

Item I give & bequeath unto my son Richard Herl ye sume of Tenn pounds in paper Money to be paid in Bills of publick credit by my executor when my sd son Richard comes to ye age of one and twenty years.

I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Elizabeth one thrid part of my personall estate to her and her heires for Ever, Excepting what I have before given to my grand Children

As also it is my Will that my sd beloved wife should have the use of one thrid part of my Real Estate dureing her natural life

Moreover it is my Will & Pleasure that my Executor shall pay to my sd beloved wife the sume of Eight pounds tenn shillings in Bills of publick credit, wthin two years after my decease.

Finally I do hereby Appoint my Loving son Atherington Herl my sole Executor of this my Last Will & Testament, and I do hereby depose & appoint that my Loving friends mr Humphry Chadburne & Mr James Grant would be trustees and overseers of ys my Last Will to see it duely executed.
