    2I. GILIBREDE (GILCHRIST)

    m. ?daughter of Gospatrick, 3rd Earl of DUNBAR & March
    d.c.1180

Gilibrede fought in the battle of the Standard under King David I in 1138. He was one of the 20 barons given as hostages to obtain the release of William the Lion from Falaise, Normandy from King Henry in 1174.(3)

"Ggillebrite comite d'Engus" witnessed an undated charter by King David to the monks of Deer Abbey.(4) He witnessed a charter from 1164 by King Malcolm confirming the foundation of Scone Abbey.(5) He also witnessed a charter, c.1188, from King William the Lion granting the churches of Elgin and Eren to the Bishopric of Moray.(6)

Magnus is usually designated as a son of Gillebride, Earl of Angus. This statement was first made by Sir James Dalrymple in his Collections, but he gives no proof. However there is a charter noted in an old inventory of Oliphant writs, made about 1594, and preserved in the General Register House stating that Magnus was the son of Gilchrist, Earl of Angus, who died about 1204, thus making him the grandson of Gillebride which seems to fit the facts better. The writ states that he received from Alexander II the south half of Caithness, which corroborates the theory of division.(1)

Magnus probably had a Norwegian mother, through whom he received the earldom of Orkney, which the King of Scots could not have given him. Skene suggests that this "Earl was the son of one of Harald Ungi's sisters, the name Magnus being peculiar to the line of Erlend."(2) Anderson and Dalrymple state that Gillebride probably married a sister or daughter of John, Earl of Orkney, son of Harald Maddadson, however, the dates make this statement doubtful and no authority is given for this statement.
